I really enjoyed this video as I am trying to watch as much as possible on Porsche maintenance as I have a knocking sound from the rear when driving over potholes or bumps in the road, something not right in that area, so this was very useful.
@fupabox5 жыл бұрын
I have a knock as well.. can't isolate it , and it doesn't always happen . In the spring , my next thing to eliminate will be the front engine mount . When I purchased the car the inspecting mechanic said the knock was the upper rear strut mounts and lower ball joints ..changed both, no difference. I saw the strut bump stops were toast when I replaced the upper strut mounts and got new ones , but they didn't help either . My car sometimes lurches/bucks at low speeds in first gear... a worn engine mount would cause this , The engine would rock back and forth on the mount and pull slightly on the throttle cable causing the slight bucking,..it would also clunk over bumps. I will be doing the vid. as soon as spring comes.

Well done. All nuts / bolts should be coated with Blue thread lock such as Loctite to prevent thread corrosion & hold torque.

I made sure to find one that had all the $$$ known issues already fixed . Recent clutch , water pump , oil/air separator and IMS bearing , new soft top with glass rear window . $10k in repairs in last 6k miles. + new brakes all around for good measure. The issues were a non working roof with a box of dubious parts , lower control arm ball joints , leak in a/c system , peeling chrome on one wheel and rear upper strut mounts . Otherwise in great shape and never seen snow. I tried to find one with all the big $$ stuff already done , but needing attention in other areas . some parts seem a little pricey , but not much worse than any dealer prices for even Japanese cars . Oh I forgot .. non working keyless entry . I need to have some stuff to do to it or it would be boring LOL.

I think a little bit of WD 40 and tapping will do the trick faster.

great video explanation how this was done. I need to do my fronts, I would imagine they are similar? How on earth did you Torque down the bolts? No room for a socket and torque wrench so wondering how you did it?
@fupabox4 жыл бұрын
use the force Luke... lol.. JK you can just try to estimate . figure 100 ft lbs is about what a lug nut is torqued to and 20 is a spark plug and you can get a general idea of how much force to use when tightening

@@fupabox Makes sense. Thanks for the tip!

Great video, thanks for showing how to do this. One thing I'm not sure of, though, how did you get your torque wrench on that ball joint top nut?
@fupabox3 жыл бұрын
I didn't/couldn't as far as I recall . The torque spec, I gave is just to give an idea of how tight to tighten it . I have no clue how a torque wrench would fit on there .. lol

Thanks for the video. Should this be the same for the 981 generation? Looks pretty similar under there if memory serves me correctly.

My 996 Carrera has all green alignement on screen for front but feels like has bad ball joints and makes creeking noise and steering pulls right,what should I check for?
@fupabox4 жыл бұрын
Front upper strut mount bearings are likely gone . if it gets harder to turn at certain points when you turn full left and right then it's pretty likely the mount bearing . seized ball joints could also cause this .If you can hold your hand over the lower ball joints while someone turns left and right you will be able to feel if they are moving as they should . My first guess would be mount bushings/bearings

What brand control arms did you use? are they still operating fine?
@fupabox5 жыл бұрын
pretty sure they were either mevotech or moog. Still fine ..only have about 1000km on them
@WolfpackS2k5 жыл бұрын
How did you remove the control arm inner bolt? Your video shows how to loosen the nut on the front side, but you didn't show how to actually remove the bolt from the joint. I'm working on my Cayman right now, and the nut came off easily enough. But the bolt will not budge. There's not enough clearance on the nut side to fit in a hammer in there to tap it. So what's the solution here?
@fupabox5 жыл бұрын
I would lube the crap out of the bolt and try turning it with a breaker bar or a wrench .. once the bolt is turning wiggle the control arm and the bolt should wind out
@WolfpackS2k5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reply! I got it figured out. Didn't realize beforehand that I had let the bolt rotate outside of it's "key" fitting with the washer (washer on front side). So the washer was jammed. I used some vice grips to hold the washer down to the mount and rotated the bolt back so the key lined up with the notch in the washer. Ruined the washer and bolt, but that's a cheap fix.

for anyone reading this 4 years later, I had the same issue and used a AUTOZONE tool called BALL JOINT TOOL and it creates top pressure and the thing slid right after a few turns. look it up, super useful and they rent it for free.

Would like to see how u took the control arm out. Did not show that part. I couldn’t take mine out. Replacing struts. Took out the bushing bolt from the other end. Do not want to use the fork
