It’s the blade runner effect. Movie lovers think a movie is super well known, that everyone wants a follow up, and that tons of people will go see it. Instead it’s a niche movie, not a lot of people saw it, and not a lot of people wanted another one. Furiosa and blade runner 2049 were great, but they never had a chance to make tons of money.

10 years ago, I would go to the cinemas about every month with a couple of friends and we'd be like looking at the posters and randomly pick one that spoke the most to us and watch it and be happy with it Now because we have the vanity to watch most movies we desire to see on streaming platforms at home, we are thinking twice before heading to the cinemas It has to be a movie worth seeing and experiencing on the big screens and FURIOSA is definitely worth it so I went and watched it But to be honest I struggled finding a movie buddy to bring with me, all women in my family and female friends were like nope not my type, even my brother was like "nope not a fan of Fury Road so why would I like Furiosa?" And my cousins were too young to see it, I only found my 15 year old cousin to bring with me (who posed as a 16 year old 😂) for us to see it and we both LOVED the movie I guess the main reason of the box office flop is the GENRE

I agree with your 2nd point- Mad Max just isn't the moneymaker we thought it is. Honestly, if the first movie didn't have so much Oscar Buzz I wouldn't have given it a second look. And when I eventually saw it I didn't feel the greatest urge to watch more of it. Also, can't ignore money as an issue. We just came from the Godzilla movie and the Planet of the Apes movie. I don’t think the fact it’s a prequel makes it undesirable for new audiences. Anyone turned off by the fact it’s a prequel would’ve been turned off by a sequel too. If anything a prequel should be more welcoming to the GA. Also I think people not having enough money is a factor. Every movie John listed as being successful was part of a franchise or sequel, which makes sense when you realize that audiences have money, they just aren’t spending it on original movies or movies that aren’t part of a familiar franchise. Is it really a surprise that despite a financial depression in America, movies like John Wick and Super Mario were smash hits? This is why Fallguy and other original movies have been failing: people can’t afford to take risks at the movie theater anymore, especially when most movies come to streaming weeks later for the price of a movie ticket a month.

@@thePouncingPurplePanther Yeah and the fact Mel Gibson doesn't want to play Mad Max anymore is just a minor detail, they (I guess by "they" you meant George Miller) could've kidnapped Gibson and coerce him to play the part... in a spin-off that isn't about Max but, as Logan proved, we all know spin-offs suck by essence and don't deserve to be made, ever. And they should've made the movie in 2017, regardless of how difficult and demanding it is to make to make those films especially for a 70+ (and now 80) year old director, everything always has to go as planned, otherwise the movie suuuuuucks.

With the long promotion cycle, I lost track of when FURIOSA was coming out. I didn't realize until Saturday that it came out this weekend. Sometimes, all the promotion that comes with these films makes me burn out on paying attention. Several other people I know who were looking forward to it didn't know it came out this weekend. Waiting nine years is way too long, and the fact that it doesn't have any of the same actors as Fury Road makes it hard for people to get attached to it. We need WASTELAND within the next two years, or we will never get it. I loved FURIOSA as much as FURY ROAD and will watch it many times over again. If anyone ever told me I would get a killer DUNE sequel and a killer MAD MAX sequel in 2024, and they would be some of the best, if not the best, of the franchise, I would never have believed it. Long live desert sci-fi films.

"Fury Road made less than Black Adam" - doesn't mean that fewer people saw Fury Road. Don't discount inflation. Also - the fact that it's been out for so long means that it has been on probably every major streaming service and people who missed it in theaters saw them on streaming. In the end - despite successes like Avatar, Mario, Barbie and others - people have become more picky about which movies they're going to see. Marketing this movie without Mad Max would have killed it even more.

The main problem is that most blockbusters have budgets that are far far too high for what the end result is. Which forces movie studios to have to charge movie theaters more to show their movies. Which forces theater companies to have to raise the prices of concessions, which is where they make their real money.

Also, Furiosa in _Fury Road_ was kind of a girl-boss--not *really,* but that is a popular perception--especially since she's pretty much on equal footing to Max. That said, many moviegoers are going to assume that, *without* Max, Furiosa in this movie will be just another girl-boss, and they're tired of this propaganda. It's tragic, because Furiosa is not a girl-boss in this movie. She suffers greatly, has to overcome danger through her cunning *and* the help of a male mentor, and continues to suffer as she takes the Hero's Journey. She is no Rei Palpatine, in this saga just to show up the men. It's a revenge movie! It's got action and brutality galore! I don't see why more people won't see it? Those who have rate it highest of all the Mad Max movies. Take a Big Cue from them.

John Campea prior to Furiosa always said if the previous movie is great (Fury Road is considered a classic) then the sequel will see a significant bump opening weekend. Furiosa essentially failed and he starts blaming Fury Road which had nearly double the opening weekend with 40+ million. Furiosa failed because the trailer didn’t set the world on fire and no Tom Hardy as Max. I’m sorry but Catwoman is only interesting with Batman to bounce off of. Likewise with Furiosa is cool but a lot of her charm is how she mixes with Mad Max.

Furiosa's a spin-off set in the Mad Max universe so why ask for Max to be in the movie and why do you want Mel Gibson to play in it when he doesn't want to reprise his role due to his age? In every Mad Max after the original one, Max comes across people in need of help and he reluctantly (at first) helps them. In Fury Road he comes across a capable woman (OMFG, how could they?), who isn't a Mary Sue and helps her (and basically saves her) alongside a bunch of other women and that's somehow a scandal? Lord save us...

I have a feeling it’s because of 2 reasons Reason #1: They waited too long, Fury Road was an absolutely beloved movie and Furiosa was a beloved character, but for some reason they waited 9 years to make a Furiosa movie, had they made it in say 2017, 2018 or 2019 when people were still riding the high of Fury Road I think it would’ve done a lot better Reason #2: Mad Max seems like it’s always been more of a cult franchise, other than Fury Road the Mad Max movies never really seemed like they were that popular with the mainstream public, unlike something like Terminator which everybody knows the original Mad Max movies seemed more like obscure B movies that a friend of a friend would show you

I love this franchise but it has never been too popular. It also remains me to the last blade runner with Ryan Gosling, it was a box office bomb, the last fast and furious didn't even make too much money, people is not going to the movies like before.

The prequel to a 9 Year old movie has nothing to do with it. Everyone was saying Avatar 2 is going to fail because its been over 10 years since the first movie and the hype is not there. Avatar 2 proved them wrong because it was a great movie. Every thought so, so people kept going back. Furiosa failed simply because Mad Max is niche franchise. This isnt even a Mad Max movie. Its a Mad Max spin off film. Thats why people dont didnt go see it. Plain and Simple.

Moviegoers who didn't see Furiosa (for whatever reasons) missed out on a once in a decade cinematic masterpiece. Furiosa didn't actually lost as it may end up a cult classic like Blade Runner. Its actually those who passed on this spectacle who lost

Have to be honest, when I watched Mad Max: Fury Road, I enjoyed it certainly but when I was hearing the amount of people gushing over it with some saying it was one of the best films they had ever seen......I really had to question whether I actually watched the same film. I certainly didn't have any need to see a movie based on Furiosa 's back story (but I guess it is rather de rigueur to know everyone's backstory). When you add that to the economics that going to the cinema is rather expensive (especially if you go as a family/group) so people are more selective in picking and choosing what they are going to plonk down their hard earned disposable income on, plus many probably have various streaming services and might be much more likely to wait for it to get released in that format. I just don't think this film (or the franchise as a whole for that matter) is enough of a tent pole film for the mainstream film going public to view as a must see film at the cinema. Bear in mind that Mad Max: Fury Road opened to around $45m and grossed just over $379m globally ($153m in the US) and that was off a rumoured $150m production budget, so its not like it was a massive blockbuster success at the box office to where it was a no brainer to do an origins follow up film.

Anytime there's a colon in the title, you're gonna turn people off. They're gonna automatically think, "great, another chunk of movies I need to add to my list before I can see it." Same with Fury Road. If they had just titled it "Mad Max" it would've invited the next generation of moviegoers in because it signals itself as a reboot (which it was, let's be honest) and there would've been no need to sludge through the first 3. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the original trilogy, but they are NOT movies that appeal to modern-day moviegoers. I can see most people giving up after the first one, honestly.

Fury Road probably did lose money at the box office. There's a dispute as to the budget. It barely made box office profit at the low end (Miller et al) $155m, and definitely lost money at the studio estimate, $180m+.

WB taught they could pull-off the same thing like Sony did with Spider-Verse. Because ITSV wasn't also a huge box office hit (almost has the same box office like Fury Road), but it became one of the most beloved CBM of all time so that the sequel almost doubled the box office gross of the previous movie.

Fury Road was the first Mad Max film I’ve seen in my life and I LOVED it. That being said, I wasn’t really interested in seeing this film. Mad Max was before my time (I was born in 1995) so it’s not really a franchise that excites me. It’s like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny last summer; it’s a franchise from the 20th century that today’s generation doesn’t care about. There are just some franchises like Mad Max and Ghostbusters that no longer have a place in today’s world no matter how studios want to bring them back.

We consumers are being selective in our movie going experiences. If it didn't already have traction prior to this economy then we're not going to see it. We would rather wait until it comes to digital and watch it in our home movie theater that we elevated from the time we were made to remain home. Home theater is for regular movies that audience sees as regular. It has to be a major experience that we can't wait to see at home. Theaters have to bring prices down to reasonable sense of consumers spending any extra funds. As a consumer I would rather spend on good groceries and watch a good movie in my surround sound 9.2.2 with 85 inch screen television.
