I was looking at the Furls hooks last night and got to within one click of buying one when I though I should look at reviews. So the timing of this is perfect. A sharp tip is nice, but the hook edge needs to be rounder, so this was exactly what I needed. Thanks.

This was very informative - an excellent comparison. I have something to add, however.; Some backstory first. I actually went looking for an "ergonomic Susan Bates" awhile back and wanted a lightweight hook also. I am a left-handed crocheter who uses a pencil grip. I had given up large crochet projects in favor of knitting some time ago, having developed not only pain during long crochet sessions, but a condition that caused a joint in my thumb to lock, and which required medical intervention. Not, thank goodness, surgery! Then I saw and fell in love with a particular afghan pattern, and went hunting for my Holy Grail hook. I bought a LOT to try. I bought a Furls wooden Streamline because of the hook style, its aesthetic, and its light weight. What nobody mentioned in the reviews I watched was how it behaves in a *pencil* grip rather than a knife grip. I simply could not use it with my pencil grip. The throat was so long (and graceful! and elegant!) that I still had death grip on it, and the lovely smooth increase in diameter rested on my hand in a spot that did me no good at all. I even tried to switch to a knife grip and couldn't do it. I think that swell would feel great pressing up against a knife-holder's palm. So my Furls is a display item and I discovered Clover Amour hooks. I was able to adapt to a Boye style hook and have never looked back.

You really can’t judge Furls until you try them and work with them for awhile. The Odyssey you have is one of the one I have and it’s my very favorite. I buy different sizes in different colors so that isn’t an issue. I actually own a few streamlines several Odyssey’s and one Alpha. I bought the Alpha when it was 30% off so it was around $55. I really don’t like it and everyone raves about the Alpha but I will stick to my Odyssey’s. I do have fibromyalgia and these give me the ability to to crochet for hours with almost no pain and I don’t get tired. I want to say this also, I HATE Susan Bates also but I love these!

I also ordered a Clover set in the larger sizes but have not received them yet but the reviews were good. Fingers crossed.

I love Tulips! They are my go to hooks. I have multiple sets. And I have the clover amour in the large sizes but, last year, I got the Furls streamlined swirl hooks in 7mm to 10mm and I haven't used those clover hooks since. The furls hooks are especially great for roving and single ply yarns (such as blanket yarn)

Your review was absolutely spot on. I too, have been wishing for Furls hooks and bit the bullet and bought the swirls, 5 different sizes. I waited for their arrival with great anticipation. I couldn’t wait to begin crocheting. I loved the look of them. They do feel comfortable to grip. I got my virus blanket out and away I went. And it was like ...shut the front door! I cannot finish my stitches! The hook gets stuck when I pull through, so it now feels like an extra step to make a proper looking stitch! Then I thought it must be me! So I tried again with different yarn,. Same result. I am just sick. I spent $88 for 5 hooks. I really appreciate your thorough review as it helped me to understand what may be causing my stitches to stick when trying to pull through. I love all your videos and have learned so much from you as my teacher! Thank you and stay safe.

I also have a set that I bought from Amazon that looks the exact same as your ergos but came with 14 hooks, a case, 9 metal yarn needles, scissors, stitch markers and a case for $22 in October. By far my favorite hooks! Quality doesn't need to cost a lot.

I recently got an odyssey hook and I didn’t really like it at first but because it was a present I decided I would finish the project I was working on with it. After a few days I got the hang of it and it’s now my favorite hook. I was using clover armory before and never liked Susan bates either. I think it just needs the time to get used to a new hook. Thank you for your thorough review. I have used just about every brand of crochet hook made. I began crocheting in my pre teen years using the hooks my mother provided for learning, which happened to be Susan Bates. I have tried Boye hooks and other tapered hooks, but tend to stumble and get frustrated. Now that my senior years have arrived, an ergonomic hook is now the need. I have discovered Clover Armour hooks and, boy for me they are totally awesome. They are the perfect marriage between Inline hooks and tapered hooks. I will never use any other!

Thanks fir the thoughtful review., I’m a big fan of good reviews. Honestly.,, I have heard so many negative reviews on the Furls hooks.., I think they sell because somehow their name is supposed to mean high quality.., or something. I have child sized hands, so those big, fat handles would never work for me. I tried an Odessy once, and it felt very awkward in my hand...but my friend...who has large hands... loved it. I mostly used Susan Bates hooks, until I discovered the Clover Amours. They are perfect for me. I have serious vision issues, so having each size color coded is a big plus for me. And.. My Clovers are sooo comfortable. I love them. Those wooden hooks looked very uncomfortable to me. I would never buy anything like that, but I can see the allure... I agree that Furls has made a huge mistake by not clearly marking the Odessy. Once the sticker comes off, you are going to have a problem. I was looking at the Furls website, and they go fir as much as $149.00. Wow! If I were to actually try a Furls hook, it woukd be the red Swirls... It’s gorgeous. Hmmmmmm.☕️

I bought a Furls Odyssey last year as a bday gift to myself. the first time i used it, there was a "burr" where the metal part met the resin/colored plastic part that was apparently machined and not smoothed(?) that rubbed precisely where my finger held the hook. I am a lefty and maybe righties don't notice, but after crocheting about 30 min my finger hurt. i saw tiny slices all over! ow! i called Furls and they kindly replaced it right away and gave me a shipping label to return the original one. the new one was better, but i never could keep a grip on the round handle with no flattening or thumb rest it just spins around. So in the box it sits unused. I much prefer the Yarnology hooks I got at Hobby Lobby that are basically the same shape but can grip them--at a fraction of the cost--and they are pretty. Susan Bates Soft handle and Clover Amour are also good in my hands.

A drawback to the Athena Hook especially in the larger size is the short length before the rubber handle. That can be a problem with thicker yarns with a number of loops on the hook. I'd like to see you try the Elmo Tulip hooks. They have the ergonomic handle with a smooth metal hook. Pros like Doris Chan use them almost exclusively and she does a lot of crochet. I find the rounded tip easy to use and it seems something you might like. They are not cheap: but you can purchase them for about $7-$8 each. In my opinion, these should definitely be in anyone's toolkit if you do a lot of crochet.

Thank you for the review. I always wondered about the Furls hooks. I started out 30 years ago with Boye hooks and I liked them. I tried Bates and I didn’t care for them. I now use Clover because of my arthritis.

I want you to know how valuable this was for me. I have been crocheting a shawl and it just kept snagging and splitting. I realized it was the hook, not the yarn. Initially I was using a sharp hook, change to a more rounded hook and I couldn't believe what it difference it made. No more snagging and splitting. THANK YOU!!!!

I wish I could share a picture of my prized hook with you guys!!! I love Furls hooks, but I like this one even more. It was expensive, but they're handmade, one of a kind, GORGEOUS, and so smooth and lovely to use. It's amazing. I bought it through Nelsonwood on etsy, but I think there is a Nelsonwood website too. They're worth checking out, and I'll use this hook for life!

I have large hands and I love the weight and feel of the Odysseys hooks. I have over 30 of them. And would not go back to a regular hook. I have tried all the one in your review and Odyssey is my true love.

Thank you for that I had seen everyone buy those expensive ones and you helped me in making a decision to not wait my money I agree with you with the type of hook I like the same as you do in the tip and the coloured metal ones and the grip ones you like using is like what I have . I just didn’t have the larger sizes in the coloured metal ones that all and was going to buy the expensive ones but am glad I brought the coloured metal cheaper ones in those sizes so thank you so much for confirming my decision your video helped greatly thanks Gina

I absolutely appreciated this review. I’m a baby crocheter, and my first hook set (and only) is from BCMRUN on Amazon and they look to be the same as the Athena hooks. I adore their ease of use and grip, but I wanted to try Furls because I do get hand fatigue/ pain. This review has helped me make a decision , thank you!

Thanks for the review. I watched a KZfaqr go crazy over a Furls hook sale and questioned if the were worth it. You answered my questions. I use Tulip hooks, as I like their hook tip and the ergonomic flattening for the thumb. (I grew up using Boye). I will be spending my money on yarn not different hooks!

Uh oh! I decided to give my new Odyssy a few days, before I sent it back... I admit that it took a while, but all of a sudden it felt comfortable in my hand, snd I was happily crocheting with it. So,,, I am keeping it, snd when there is a sale, I plan to order a red one...This one is purple. Maybe you should play with the Odessy. for a while... I am a little bit embarrassed, but happy that I have a new toy to play with. Do I sound fickle...or indecisive? I hope not. Time for more☕️.... Take care, snd stay safe..💜

Great video and good info! Hope you are well. Stay safe! I have a hard time with these fatter hooks. I have tried others, but most of the time I use Boye. I have some wooden ones but as you said, they are too sharp, both the point itself and the undercut, so i don't really use them any more.

I really like my furls hooks. The resin hooks below a size G are very flexible and bend a lot and I find them unusable. I have several of their alpha series too, which run over $100. They're worth it, but the $20 hook is just as good. (Love your videos!)

The terms I have dubbed hooks are "flat heads or round heads" I'm firmly in the flat heads (Susan Bates) category. I normally crochet and knit tightly and with the the rounded heads I split the yarn and can't get any speed. I think it is also a function of how I hold my hooks. I have tried the furls, they came out with a yellow odyssey! Love yellow! I also got one streamline, one resin, and one of the alpha series. The odyssey went back right away. Tested on a scarf, my hand hurt so much, it was too heavy. The streamline and resin should have gone back, only because i realized the way i hold my hooks I do better with the short stubby flat head hooks, so the alpha works wonderful without me adjusting to it. I kept the other 2 because of the cool color of the resin and depending on the yarn I use. I do find I do crochet a little looser with them. But the Susan Bates are my go to!

I love Susan Bates, I've tried so many hooks (including furls) and always go back to Susan Bates. I crochet fast and smoothly with my Susan Bates and almost never split or get the yarn stuck on the hook. Love them! And I don't mind if the coating chips a little, I just buy a new one they are so reasonably priced for the quality!

I appreciate your video going over these hooks. I never thought about the difference in the sharpness vs. roundness of a hook before, but it is so true! I do not like the sharpness of Susan's needles, either, because of the splitting and the fighting with the yarn and needle that follows when that happens. LOL!!

Helpful things to think about. I do a lot of amigurumi and currently use the type of rounded tips with rubber grips that you talk about in this video. I have been interested in trying a Furls Odyssey because of the ergonomic features. I think I'll get a cheap Susan Bates type hook before going to a Furls to see if I can use that type of hook. Thanks for your in depth and honest review.

Hi- Greetings from Alabama! Love you channel! I'm so happy I discovered it- just hearing your voice gets me excited to crochet. And thank you so much for this video. Very grateful for your review on these hooks! I really needed this. I'm a true beginner- can't even understand the pattern reading process yet; however, I've been watching many, many KZfaq tutorials; slowing down, pausing, rewinding & I've been cranking out beautiful ripple blankets, throws, & even a few of your patterns as well (the Nautilus Blanket, The 8 Point Granny Star Blanket, The Virus Shawl) along with a couple of others. I've fallen quickly & deeply in love with the craft. I have a question for you & I really hope you have an answer for me. I know a individuals crochet hook is a very personal thing but in certain scenarios it depends on the yarn as to what hook you need to use. I'm not talking hook size but rather the material/ yarn/ thread used. With that being said, I have the complete set of hooks you purched from Amazon (the ones with the different colored handles)- athena or something like that... lol! Love them- my first set EVER. I also have a Susan Bates 5 mm with an ergonomic handle & a couple of others (mostly your standard aluminum hooks). Not a large collection per se, but enough to get me started. You're right, these hooks from Amazon are really great & I've been using them with no problem at all. However, I recently purchased some Truboo yarn- And a TON of it too... LOVE the feel! Can't wait to use it & feel it gliding through my fingers but it just doesn't feel right on my hooks🙁 In your professional opinion, what hook(s) works best with this type of yarn- it's 100% Rayon from Bamboo. Please help!!! I've Googled, I've asked other KZfaqrs & I can't get an answer. It's making me crazy because I'm SOOOO ready to dive into this yarn, but I need a proper hook that's made for this type of yarn. I thought about ordering the Furls Streamline- Ergonomic Wooden hook in Camwood or Teak size G- 4 mm (I actually put it in my shopping cart from the Furls website yesterday, but I was hoping someone would send me an answer before I make the purchase.) I'm wondering if a wooden hook might work better with this sort of slippery yarn but from what I'm hearing, that hook is pretty slippery as well. What are your thoughts? I know you prefer acrylic yarns but have you ever worked with this sort of yarn before? If so, what was your experience like? Did it pan out for you or did I just waste a ton of money? Lol! Thanks in advance- Any help & advice will be greatly appreciated. Sending you love & blessings from Alabama- Misti

I once heard a saying like "it's a poor carpenter that blames his tools". It sounds like you agree, as do I. I do recommend TooShay on Etsy. There are tons of options for custom handles, and they even let me send a couple Etimo hooks, stripped the cushion handle, and implemented the one I requested with some changes on shaping. Really nice people. And, no, I don't "know" them. Just used their service a few times. Susan Bates tends to snag, in my experience. But Furls are nice. When my Odyssey got loose, they replaced it within 2 days! Still a bit too pricey for my taste.

Thank you for the review! My favorite hooks are ones I bought from the now defunct website, Happy Crochet Hooks. They have polymer clay covered handles in a bunch of different designs. They did what Furls apparently does not... allowed you to choose between Boye and Susan Bates. You could also choose how much of the hook you preferred the clay to cover. I believe several of the creators still sell hooks on Etsy. I paid $15 to $20 per hook and that was with coupon codes. But I loved supporting home based small businesses. I think I may try to make my own. A relative recently sent me a hook with a gorgeous hand carved handle made from olive wood from Bethlehem. It's a stunning work of art! But it's a Susan Bates and I'm Boye all the way. 😳 I didn't think to specify the brand when I was asked what size I preferred. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I will power through and find yarn to use it with because it was made with love just for me! Take care! Happy homebound stitching! ☕️

I agree with you about the ergonomic Boye hooks... absolutely my favorite. One thing about the Furls style is that I hold my hook like a pencil so this looks so clunky to me. All the weight of the hook would be further back in my hand and I would be holding the little skinny part between my fingers. Not good for my arthritis. Thanks for reviewing these. You're the best! 💜

THIS! I use the same grip and just left a long comment about how it doesn't work for a pencil grip. with my grip the chubby part was resting o the web between my thumb and forefinger and worse, my fingertips were gripping the skinniest part.

Thank you very much for doing this. Although in the end, it's a matter of personal preference, I think it's important to hear reviews like these from the people who do use them more often and for prolonged periods of time, as they can really provide us with a more accurate feedback. My favorites are the Clover Amour hooks. I love everything about them: their ergonomic shape, their weight, the materials they're made of, their tips and even their price is reasonable! (On Amazon you can sometimes get a set of 10 hooks for around $28!)

I LOVE Furls hooks, they're a great company and I own about 12 hooks in the Candy shop and Odyssey style, I tried the Streamline but it felt flimsy and broke immediately. My favorite style is the Candy shop. I dislike the Odyssey in a hook size smaller than G, the weight bothers me. They are wonderful hooks and the company replaces each hook one time if it breaks. That said I stopped purchasing them and have returned to my Clover Amour because they break incredibly easily. I also like Etimo Tulip hooks. I've been crocheting 25+ years and the ONLY hooks I've ever broken are Furls. The company has replaced them quickly and kindly but I can not see spending so much money on products that continue to break so easily.

Good to know about the customer service/replacement on first breaks. W/ the price I was a little worried since I use 4, 4.5, and 5 the most for tighter projects to get a knit look. I liked the coffee swirl so I’d gotten that swirl and ordered an original streamline in a 6. I wasn’t sure since I’ve never had a wooden hook before, either metal or the cheap plastic ones. I was looking for something that would feel better in the hand, luckily I crochet the way these were meant to be held. I noticed a comment above where they hold it the down position and couldn’t use it.
