You know you're addicted to crochet when you watch 3 seasons of a TV show and have no idea what the characters look like !!!

I have been looking for a website that explains the different hook END types. I found this video of Margaret's very helpful (and the ONLY website) that I was able to find with what I was looking for. So thank you Margaret! My favorites are the aluminum hooks which I learned with to crochet 36 years ago.I don't do anything fancy, but I love crocheting.

I prefer the Susan Bates hooks. I recently purchased clover “Amour” hooks and I love them. They are so comfortable in my hand and the hooks are so smooth and just glide through the yarn. They are similar to the Bates hooks but a little more tapered. I cannot use Boye hooks. They seem to catch on the yarn and split it when I pull through the loops.

I learned how to crochet with an aluminum Boye hook, and it always felt a little bit awkward to me, somehow. Then, the first time I ever tried an aluminum Susan Bates hook, I was flabbergasted at the difference in how easily I could create my stitches, and how quickly my speed in crocheting improved. I know if a person is working any kind of Tunisian crochet with short rows, that the Boye hook is really good, because the thumb print section is farther away from the head of the hook, but I prefer the thumbprint section closer to the head of the hook, as in the Susan Bates hooks- the Susan Bates hooks are my all-time favorites, and I have taken rubber bands for the smaller sizes and wrapped the shaft of the hook with several rubber bands, and then put pencil gel grips over the hooks to pad them; and if the hooks are bigger, I just put the pencil gel grip right over the hook, and it fits fine, and prevents my fingers and hands from getting sore from holding the hard metal hook for too long. Incidentally, I use the knife hold for crocheting- I do know how to crochet with the pencil hold but it makes my thumb and first finger, along with my wrist, ache- but the knife hold, doesn't.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out those sites. My favorite hooks, and the ones that I keep coming back to, are my Susan Bates with the bamboo handles. I tend to crochet tightly, and the even shape of the Bates hooks keeps my gauge much looser. My hook gets caught up in the stitches when I use tapered hooks, and it really slows me down.

I definitely prefer the Bates style hooks. I got some aluminum Red Heart brand hooks at Walmart (Canada) that I am very happy with, but I think they are possibly by Susan Bates or a knock off. Same style.

Thanx for this video explaining & more importantly seeing the difference up close & magnified, between the tapered & inline type structure of crochet hook-for many, the use of one type or the other REALLY makes a big difference in crocheting!

Boye: They are my favorite because of how I like the long-tapered neck/throat. I have been crocheting for 43 years and have tried others, but the yarns just do not flow over the hook for the way I crochet. I just crochet faster with Boye. It is the non-roundness of the neck I never liked on Susan Bates and my yarn always never flows past that very smoothly when I am setting my stitch tension. Boye is round all the way and for me, that makes my flow of crochet move so much smoother and faster down on the hook. Plus, my hooks are 43 years old and well tested, wouldn't trade them for any others that are out there!........... Oh yeah, the shaft is where you get your stitch tension size so to me, it being round and a couple or 3 stitches room there makes for a more even tension in the overall of any piece I crochet, especially in tunisian/entrelac pieces

I enjoyed this video, great job Margaret! That Luxite set was my 1st set of hooks! Recently, I bought another set from Joann's for about $2. Because,if I want to show someone how to crochet, I can let them use the Luxites. I have sooo many types of hooks. They're a fun & inexpensive collectable. I have 2 of the finely crafted hooks by Bill at Turn of the Century; An African Blackwood & a Mulberry wood hook. I use the Etimo Rose & the Clover Soft touch for most of my projects.

Fascinating video. I'm not a very experienced crocheter and had no idea that there were so many different styles of hook. I had been using my old aluminum hooks but I'm going to look at them much more closely now. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this information. I’m going to look up those sites and read through. I like the Susan Bates hooks myself but I do have others that I like. I never really compared them to see what it is that is different about them so this video got me thinking about that.

Thank you! I'm picking up crochet again and was really frustrated at my speed with this project and didn't know why my yarn kept slipping. I finally realized that one, my hold wasn't the best, but two, I really didn't like the clover hook I'm using. I started buying Susan bates aluminum with a woof handle years ago and loved them, but this project called for a bigger hook so I ordered a clover plastic hook on amazon.... God I hate small chin chins lol. I finally realized why I have such a hard time with this video. I will finish my blanket with this hook but now I know what to look for when I buy my next hook. Great research and information Margaret. I do like the look of the Susan Bates coloured hooks. My currently growing more and more to liking my Knit Pro black handled hook (I only have one in a 5.5mm size). That gauge is a nice idea but I'm guessing it's difficult to use on some hooks (especially if they aren't "inline"?).

I prefer the tapered hook. I read "Croching in Plain English" by Maggie Righetti. Years ago. Published in 1988.i was already a crocheter.. But I agree with the author who concludes that there is a difference in the stitches with the flat-throated kind.

Thanks for the great information! I haven't played around too much with hooks yet. I'm very glad you linked the sites so I can also look into it. By the way the second I saw the wooden hooks I too thought of Harry potter wands! hahahahaha I loved working with the luxite when I was making fruit and veggies for my mother-in-law. They really are very smooth and I felt help speed the projects up.

Great video, very informative! I see that I am in the minority here in the comments but I love Boye hooks and I can't crochet as well with the Bates style hooks. They catch the yarn in a way that makes me work harder to keep the stitches flowing. The Boye hooks just seem to flow much better for my work. The reason why I prefer Boye hooks is because the Susan Bates hooks snag in my yarn. I like both though.

I never used either of Boye or Susan Bates. They don't work for me. However, I have my top favorites that I used all the time. It's Etimo Tulip crochet hooks. Sadly, you won't find them here in USA (I wish) but you can order any size on either Amazon or Ebay or Etsy. They are the best and comfortable. They comes in two different color. One is pink with silver and other is black with gold. I chose pink cuz I'm a pink girl! The second favorite is Clover Amour. They are great! They're light and comfortable. Almost all craft stores have them. I had double carpal tunnel and I had to have surgery. They're fine now. That is why I prefer those hooks. Enjoy!

My all time favorite will always be BOYE!! Can't stand the deep "chinney chin-chin" kind. I have 2 I think it's L hooks and one is deep and I can't stand it!! All I have ever used is steel boye hooks. I love 'em to pieces. Never really thought of buying any other type hook. So satisfied with mine!

In Canada we use the us system for hook measurement and we have red heart hooks here in walmart and they are like the Susan Baytes hooks. I like the inline hooks because they always grip the yarn where I have trouble with the boyes not hooking the yarn.

I like the tapered hook of Susan Bates but the biggest reason I love Susan Bates and those types are the hook design itself. I find the tighter bend makes it easier to pull through my work so much better than Boye. I started with Boye so I can use that just fine but I’m way faster and get caught or loose the loops way less with the more tapered hook

When I started crocheting MANY years ago, I bought a size "H" Boye hook and used it for everything I made. Then, after many years, I ventured out tried the rest of them. Since I used a Boye for so long and was more accustomed to them, I prefer them, plus, they are inexpensive.

I have different styles of hooks as I find that even if the hooks are labelled the same size some work better for me depending on the yarn that I am using, If I had to choose a favourite it would be the Susan Bates although I do like a lot of my vintage Aero hooks ( no longer made) especially in the smaller sizes.

Love Susan bates because it is my nline and the hook for grabbing ur yarn is much deeper and much faster for me. Bought some bites by accident and didn’t know y I was struggling u til I compared it with a Bates, been using Bates for over 50 years, don’t know if there was a Boye back then and didn’t know this lingo abt tapered as opposed to inline! Ya know, I crocheted for years and years and never really noticed or looked at the differences in my hooks. I have about all the sizes and I just bought whatever they had in the size I needed and the color I liked! LOL hmmm, I think I will check and see what brands I have.. I do mostly knitting now but I still crochet when the mood strikes! LOL

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Susan Bates with the Bamboo handles, trying to get myself the whole set, but from Australia, the are expensive to come by, the are as scarce as hens teeth over here and just not stocked by hardly anyone, so they cost afortune on Amazon and or Etsy, if the sellars actually send to Aus. I love hers, for what you call a deep part to the chinny chin chin. They grip my stitches better and stop yarn splitting :) xx

Thank you for this video which was more helpful on the topic of hook head differences than anything I have found. I am with you on wanting a deep hook (or chinny chin chin) but have not been able to find deep ones in really small sizes (like for lace crocheting or those tiny tiny amigurumi figures some people sell on Etsy). I didn't know any better and bought the range between .5mm and 1.75mm offered by Clover in their Soft Touch line. I got them and began to try them using sewing thread but it keeps slipping out of the hook when I turn the hook to pull it through the loop. I thought it was me but now I really do think it is the shallow hook shape. I have a handful of assorted antique/vintage ones (with hand-crampingly small handles which is why I bought the Clover ones) and am now comparing the old with the new. Some have maybe a tiny bit more hook but not much. I guess my question is: have you or any of your viewers out there.ever come across tiny ones with deeper hooks?

I like the Bates , I can't seem to keep my stitch tension/size with the tapered hooks. When my grandma was teaching me to chain , I drove her crazy because my stitches would get tighter and tighter. 😁 I have picked up most of my hooks at garage sales so I have tried a lot of hooks. I will give them a spin and go back to Susan Bates.

Margaret just wondered if you knew of a good site that explains about knitting needle's one with cords and one that are called circular knitting needle's , and which ones to use for what projects ? thanks for sharing the info on the hooks! but i do prefer my boye hooks over my Susan bate, .and its not about the head/point. or the chinny chin chin! lol its all about the thumb rest. i like how there is more of a neck on the boye. and that the thumb rest is more to the middle of my hook.

I have tried the Bates, but i always split the yarn when yarn- over and drawing through .

I have both types of hooks boye and the Susan bates type (called red heart here in Canada but it has the exact same throat and head).. I actually don't have a preference I find them pretty much the same for me. I use them interchangeably and haven't noticed really any difference. The only thing I have issue with now is due to my lupus I have sore hands so I'm needing hooks with a comfort grip of some sort and those I'm finding make a difference in the grips. As for the actual hooks themselves I'm neutral. :)

I have used those wonderful SB Luxite, for years! Not like plastic, at all...

Is there any other inline hooks other than Susan Bates please?

I started with boye knock offs. They were ok but hard to grip with my large hands. Moved on to actual boye hooks and didn't like them as much as the knock offs. LOL I quickly grew to despise them though. They were inconsistent in smoothness. I ordered a few Bates hooks with cute handles. I've used them ONCE for one project. I didn't HATE them but I didn't love them. I was constantly snagging my yarn on that deep chin area. For large hooks, the plastic clover amour have been my go to. They are very smooth. But my go-to hooks that I LOVE, love, LOVE are tulip etimo. They are as smooth as a baby's butt. And the chin area is very shallow - more so than boye. But the head is larger than boye. Not as tapered as boye so you aren't tempted to over tighten your stitches. But did I mention? Smooth as silk. I love the shallow chin because it quickly releases the yarn. I've just gotten used to keeping my yarn on the hook. Had a set of the bamboo. Hated them passionately, though they were lovely. It's that drag on the hook that I go to great lengths to avoid. THAT is why I love my tulips so much. Even cheap, scratchy yarns surrender to the smoothness of the tulips. And they've now got large size hooks too. Can't wait to try them. Mine are on their way now, from Japan. LOL These are the only hooks I have crocheted with that are still comfy after hours of crocheting.

I looked at my Susan Bates and Boye hooks in size K. The Boye hook is longer than the S B hook.

Find some black light reactive yarn and u can crochet in the dark

I prefer the Susan Bates hooks, too... And ... I have some of the Luxite, which I love. The Boye just doesn't feel tight to me...

Have a look at the FURL HOOKS. GOOGLE Them. ILove them and they would be wonderful to pass on as a family hierloom. Look at the STREALINE FURLS. Enjoy the add-on to to your hook education? Happy hooking.

WHY choose one type over the other? How do they perform??

I prefer bates hookes I find my crochet to be neater with that style. Unfortunately my husband bought me a set of hooks for my OA and RA issues and they aren't bates hooks :( while I prefer the bates these new hooks help my hands..
