Re cycling, I had a left ankle fusion seven years ago and like you I found it didn't cause any problems at all with cycling. The pedal just rotates to suit the changed rotation in the ankle. I have just had my right ankle fused and am on the exercise bike as part of my weight bearing recovery process (with a moon boot). I find it good because I can adjust the pedal resistance to suit.

I had my right ankle fused in 2010 due to breaking it in 2003 and having the talus die and collapse. So I had it fused. I have 11 screws and 2 plates. I get along really well and walk a lot. My biggest complaint and one you and others will have is finding proper footwear. Ankles are fused at a 90 degree and most footwear has a heel rise. So this poses a problem. Your heel will bear all the weight and that makes the heel sore. There are some shoe companies like Altra that make some zero drop running shoes that at great for fused ankles. Finding boots is a hard task. I like to hunt and hike. Finding boots with a low rise heel is near impossible. A little heel rise is okay, 1/2" or less. If it is much more than that, you will have heel problems. Plus, I will wear out my right boot twice as quick as my left boot. I will wear the outside of the heel off quickly and the boots gets the weird twist to it. I have wasted a lot of money on footwear. You can't always tell if a particular shoe/boot is going to work until you give it some time. So if it doesn't work out, you have a pair of used footwear you can't take back.

Hey,I had a crash on New Year’s Day this year on my motorbike and snapped my talus in half n ripped it out of my foot… I’m getting it fused sometime in next couple of months depending on how it all go’s with some other ops first.. what did they put in place of your shattered talus????
@halfstep672 жыл бұрын
@@timothywalters2039 When I broke my right ankle, I broke the talus into several pieces and dislocated most of it. The first surgery was to screw the talus back together and see how well it healed. About 1/3 of the talus stayed in place with good blood supply. The other 2/3 of the talus lost its blood supply and died. Then the bone got weak and collapsed. Then I had the second surgery about 7 years later to fuse the ankle. The 2/3 of the talus that died was removed and replaced with bone from the lower end of the fibula. They removed several inches off of the fibula and used it to fill up the void. Then a plate was put on the side of the ankle where they removed the bone from the fibula. The fibula makes good replacement bone since it isn't really needed after an ankle fusion. I had a double arthrodesis. The 1/3 of the talus that lived goes to the forefoot joint and it didn't need to be fused. The 2/3 that needed fused went to the heal and to the tibia. I have a little flexibility in my forefoot joint which makes it better for walking. If they fuse your ankle soon before the talus dies, they can remove the cartilage and use the talus bone in the fusion. They will still need some filler bone but not as much as with me since my talus as too far gone to use. Are you getting a triple arthrodesis or a double arthrodesis?

@@timothywalters2039 Ankle fusion is a one-time surgery. There is no going back. Make sure you have a good surgeon that is experienced doing reconstructive ankle fusions. These types of surgeries can take a while to heal, and you will be off of your foot for a while. If all goes well and your ankles heals properly, that is half the battle. The other half of the battle is when you are able to go weight bearing. It takes a while for the ankle to condition itself. It will be painful for a while and take some fortitude and perseverance to get thru the healing process. Again, make sure you have an experienced surgeon who can rebuild your ankle successfully. Let me know what route your surgeon decides to take.

I would love to see an updated video. I had a major car crash in Dec 2, 2019. I broke so many things and they said I might never walk. I have had several surgeries and lots of physical therapy. I am walking(ish) now and they are hopeful I will walk normally again. My most recent surgery was an ankle fusion Dec 16th, 2020. I am eight weeks postop and just able to start putting weight on it. IT HURTS SO BAD STILL! I know that it will improve but it was very disheartening to hurt that much still. I used to play volleyball, run half marathons, and country/swing dance. Being suddenly forced into a sedentary life has been a challenge. Watching your videos have given hope that the pain is just part of being 8 weeks out. I hope that I can walk with no noticeable limp soon and eventually find ways to stay bust and get my endorphins up again! I'm thinking for me it will be biking, yoga, and swim.

I limped around in pain for several years with a significantly reduced quality of life, but getting on with having the operation seems to have been a good move at the moment. I know there may be future implications, but if you are ultimately facing an ankle fusion, my feeling is that it is good to have it done before it was got to a point where you are loosing fitness and strength, both of which will aid your recovery. I had a motorbike accident in 2017 which badly broke my right ankle - among many other things, but it's been the ankle causing on-going problems. The first ankle fix failed, so the ankle was fused, but a bone infection made a mess of that. 3 years on and I've had the ankle rebuilt & fused again ( an 8 hour op ), but now had to extend the tibia with an internal rod and wait for new bone growth. I hope to be walking by Xmas.

Hi. I have heard different recovery speeds and experiences from different people having an ankle fusion, so it will be somewhat case by case. But, in my situation, I think I could have completed some light exercise after 4weeks, but it will be critical to confirm with the surgeon and see how you feel. I think light flexibility exercises would probably be more helpful to easy the bodies adaption into the the new way you will move and hold yourself once the ankle has healed into its new position.

Hello, Is it true that ankle fusion shortens the leg by up to 1cm?
@zamirswangin7603 жыл бұрын
No
@fusedankle13713 жыл бұрын
If you remove the tibia/talus cartilage and maybe some of the surface bone at the contact areas to make the joint knit, then there has to be some shortening of the knee to ground distance. I am not sure of the typical change in length, but I have not found any issue whatsoever. Before the operation my foot was getting pretty flat, and the surgeon corrected this in the fusion, so I probably didn't experience any significant length change following the fusion.
