I can tell you that you CAN light jog and hike after ankle fusion. Have to be careful and change your form but it can be done. Proper shoes and ache supports of whatever you need are essential depending of your foot type. 44 years old here and not listening to "can't' people.

May be you can jog a little, kinda marathon, but with no jump. I can jump very little using mostly the knees joints and forefoot which is less than 25% of ankle power. To be able to run, you need to be able to jump on 1 foot only which is imposible for fused ankles, even for best athletic condition. I am a guy who used to run 10 x 400m=4000m, like 20 minutes.

@@deborahkelsey5065 No, you will not. To run, you must be able to jump on one foot. You can not do it with fused ankles. But you can walk quite fast after 2 years. Running with fused ankles is like running on heels to normal people. Or as if you are running in ski boots. You just can not.

Jan, 18, 1992, I hit a tree head-on while driving. Floorboards buckled and crushed my feet. 17 operations on both and ended up with a Blair bone fusion on my right foot. It was 30yrs since that car wreck. My personal advice-which doesn't mean much because we are all different, maintain your weight, stretch your legs to keep limber, keep your strength up and if your Dr. provides you with an AFO-WEAR IT!!! Issues today, my left foot is wore out, its been compensating for 30yrs. My back is getting worse with each passing year, my knees ache and I have arthritis. But the good- its up to you to determine your limitations. At 54yrs old, I still race motocross, I work out everyday, I can climb a tree, fish, mountain bike, swim, play baseball, roller blade, skateboard, rake the leaves, I work 15hr days as an aircraft mechanic and am on my feet weather its hot, cold, rain or like now, snowing!! I have learned to live with it, it is a life sentence and I modify my activities to accomplish what I need to do. I still have very good days, where I can go for a run but few and far between. I do live in pain everyday but its better than the alternative which is a wheel chair or dead from my injuries. If i had to do it all over again, I would have my foot amputated. I chose the course of action for the present, I should have chosen the course of action for the future, I believe I would have been better off.

I hit a tree head on in 2020, I dislocated my hip and suffered servere foot drop, I had emergency surgery for my hip, I believe until this day that when they did surgery on my hip they messed up a nerve that cause more trauma to my foot for a lil over there yr I suffered in paint trying to wear an afo to help with my foot drop, well my foot drop got so bad, my Achilles shrunk they decided to do surgery. It was surgery or amputation. I was scared to lose a limb. I opt’d out for surgery. That was in May 19th 2021. I’m still struggling to put weight through my foot. I use a Walker and wheelchair. Shit been frustrating but thanks to pain management and a little greenery I have my good days. I’m less active, but atleast im back financially able to provide for myself. It’s been a struggle with PT/OT. But yea if you have an option CHOOSE FOR THE LONGEVITY. I too wouldn’t recommend surgery either

@@MarkHK66 Only if less than 10% of cartilage is damaged you may have a chance to heal. I waited in vain 20 years to heal🤣 a 90% damaged cartilage and finally I got fused ankles. After surgery you need at least 3 months not to walk, but you may use crutches. It is much better with fused ankles than a painfull motion with no cartilage in ankle joints. I regret getting my partial ankle fusion! There were other options I was able to use instead of surgery that I was not told about. My foot problems were due to working 10+ hours 5 to 7 days a week in steel toe boots at a factory. Please look for other options as this is permanent and will affect your whole body. I'm WORSE off now than I was BEFORE the surgeries (1 surgery led to a total of 4)....Their only "help" for me now, is a full fusion (I refused) or an amputation.

@@nonologylol i feel better now that I'm not at the factory, but the surgeries caused more damage and didn't really help anything. I can no longer run or exercise, I developed severe arthritis in my entire foot, and it crunches when I move it, plus my ROM is limited now. If you can, please avoid the fusion and look for physical therapy, or stretches, or basically just about anything else to help relieve the pain.... it isn't worth it and most doctors only care about the money. Edit: July 2022. I am now running as well as exercising. My foot still crunches and still doesn't have normal ROM right now but I'm working to see if that is caused by scar tissue and can be fixed as well.

Hey Grant. I have a full fusion after a major accident. Here's my experience with skating on ice skates. I was somewhat able to do it after the fusion but unfortunately not very well. Keep in mind that I was an excellent skater when I was younger before the accident. The main reason I think that ice skating is challenging after the fusion is because there's massive lack of muscle control in order to maintain that intricate balance on a skate. My ankle just felt super sloppy compared to the healthy one. One thing I thought about doing is taping the ankle with sports tape to make it stiffer but I haven't gotten around to it since I'm not that into ice skating these days anyway. I can skate on a skateboard pretty well. Same goes for snowboarding. Hope this helps...

I attempted to commit suicide in November of 2020 and fell 40ft off a bridge. I had a subtalar fusion and I am now running along a pavement. I had to spend about 8 weeks non weight bearing and then it has been a slow process of rebuilding up that strength in my feet and my legs and body. I am now running along pavements so it is possible, there is a tiny bit of pain but it's an ok experience. The foot obviously can't turn side to side so it will obviously feel a bit rocky on pavements. If anyone else out there has a story, I'd be interested to hear it.
