Honestly I'm surprised he's even as big as he is. I wouldn't have thought there was a huge demographic of people that would've been interested in analysis of every aspect of MGS. Futura goes so deep into the psychology, game development, politics, technology, and so on of these games on a level that you only see from historians. He's basically making documentary-class content for fun and it's amazing.

It's really that Kojima crafted a 100% accurate postmodern narrative for MGS, this content seems 'specifically relevant' because the fantasy events being analyzed are essentially a mirror image of reality as we know it. Futurasound is a genius writing about a genius ;)

My parents escaped Afghanistan in the 90s, before I played MGS V i had no clear idea of the conflicts in Afghanistan. But after playing it i was interested in the history I even had the chance to visit it and see it for myself. It’s fascinating and terrifying at the same time. I don't think Kojima had all this stuff in mind. He's a big fan of western movies and Rambo 3 is set there. Plus there's that japanese karate instructor that went to fight in Afghanistan in the 1980s.
@Ebrahim_17
@Ebrahim_17 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardofredemption I think he did though. 1984 fits perfectly into how Mother-base becomes a dystopian version of Orwell's 1984. As for Afghanistan its quite clear that the destruction of mother-base mirrors 911 and thus like America Venom and Kaz must take their revenge. Kojima placed Skull face in Afghanistan because of its high mineral qualities but also because in an allegorical sense it was where America took its revenge. Skull face was Bin Ladin, but once he was killed the war/ the game did not end.. Venom kept going waging an endless war chasing phantoms because of the pain.

I was a child in Kosovo during the Balkan Wars and am a practicing Muslim fluent in Arabic that went on to work for the US Military to help with the war on terror. Overall this a good video essay but please be careful about your smaller bits of information. For example, Serbia was not attacked during the Balkan wars until NATO bombed their military in response to the ongoing genocide or “ethnic cleansing” they perpetrated on Bosnia and (at the time) occupied Kosovo. This is easy to confuse since maps at the time made Kosovo appear as part of Serbia but it is not-hence the reason for conflict and the eventual liberation. Zoroastrians don’t worship fire but they do use it as symbolism similar to Christians with the cross. The word “taliban” does mean students but it doesn’t have any “religious sense”, it’s just the plural of “talib” (student) in regular Arabic. It is also much more widely accepted by Muslims (academic ones anyway) that the prophet’s last words were (translation) “God/Allah is the greatest friend.” Also while George W Bush was obviously all about policing the world against terror, it was ultimately American conservatives that began to backlash against the ongoing occupation of Afghanistan after Osama was killed in Pakistan. It’s just small things like this you should try to be more careful about at least in the way you say them but honestly it’s not a big deal, I am amazed and proud how much a westerner such as yourself has been able to get correct. The way you use Metal Gear to analyze the real world is amazing. And I am incredibly proud of you for being able to accurately differentiate and bring to light that Osama and his legacy are un-Islamic and instead fueled by revenge and malevolence. It is unfortunate what Afghanis have faced and what they are going through right now, thank you for your work on this video. God bless.
@End_Zionism
@End_Zionism 3 жыл бұрын
Another very important one that I think I need to mention is “Jihad”. Like most misconceptions I do not blame you for misdefining this word because it is so common for it to be labeled as “holy war” but it does not and never has meant that. Jihad means “struggle” more specifically “struggle of the self” and is used to described when a Muslim fights his own inner evils or internally fights a desire or habit. Again, great video but things like this are too important to overlook considering the subject matter and potential influence.

It's incredible how you manage to consistently crank out this content that never fails to meticulously slice, dice, and dissect aspects of a game's bare components. One of the things I love most about Metal Gear is that the games taught me so much more about current events and modern military history than school ever did. Sure there's a lot of silly fantasy stuff in there, but Metal Gear is also how I learned about Soviets fighting the Mujahideen, or that Costa Rica doesn't have a military - so many pivotal events in history get woven into the series.
