4:35 holy shit at that rudder aim, what a split second moment. So, I've been playing WT on sim battles, mostly training in editor, poking around stuff to see if they work for me. I think I can partially understand from that week-old experience why you do certain things. Sometimes it's positioning, other time it's avoiding being hit like with that frontal bomber approach. Things that proved to be the most problematic so far: - right positioning to make sure that my plane will align in-flight at a proper place for me in order to shoot - aiming with gamepad is still a huge problem for me and mouse usage seems to be rundant when compared to the manouverability of the gamepad - looking around mid-flight or during manouvers is an absolute nightmare, my fingers do not respond well to that - observing in general is very difficult as I am not really the best when it comes to seeing small details - spatial orientation is hell as well, I tend to get lost easily, burst into panic mid-flight and stuff like that - intensive manouvers are at times really hard to pull off when there's a split second to decide, I've noticed that you can turn faster than normally at instructor would allow you in realistic or arcade battles but you have to balance the plane with rudder, which isn't the easiest when you only have a second for a reaction - patience is a big problem as well: I have so many messed up approaches, small mistakes, unnecessary rudder swings and others that it simply gets frustrating

An advice I give often, is to fly as if the only important goal is to stay alive. It will teach you how to position yourself and it will force you to be patient. Aiming is best learned through the mission editor of the test flight mode (that's at least how I learned it). Getting a feel for the joystick view with the controller took a bit of time, but now it's basically muscle memory. When you take this type of compilation video as a reference, you should always keep in mind, that this is a very selective view of what actually happens in game. Epic fails usually don't make the cut, but I can assure you, that they happen often enough ^^. Also, some of the things I do here, I do them for fun, or because I think they would look good in a video. For example the frontal approach on the B-17 you mentioned. I began doing these frontal attacks for fun after seeing Masters Of The Air. If I had taken that moment more serious, I would have stayed away from the B-17 after the first approach and just watched it burn out while climbing in order to be able to intercept it better if it somehow managed to turn off the fire and returned.

@@alex_black_9819 Thanks! Trying sim battle out also gave me a glimpse of why being a pro pilot demands hundreds of hours of experience in simulators before you can actually do something like... I dunno, flying an actual plane?. But yeah, it's definitely a lot of fun.
