FZR1000 Genesis Restoration - CARB CLEANING & REBUILDING

The carbs get rebuilt with new guts and the radiator gets reinstalled in preparation for the first engine start. Compression check shows low on #3 cylinder. (Spoiler: only for a short time...probably some carbon deposits caught in the seat. It's all good now).
This first step is to get the carbs back to a reasonable state - this is not the final or finished product but just enough to get the bike started. As I get deeper into the forensics of the bikes history of really shitty service, it's obvious that someone has already been at the carbs and screwed things up nicely.
If this gets the bike to run, then I can check the state of the water pump, thermostat, temp gauge & fan switch, and a bunch of other stuff. They'll be removed eventually and get a real overhaul with all new parts (air jets, main jets, needle jets, etc) when the bike gets torn down to the frame for its full restoration.

If its not a sticking valve from sitting so long, it could be just a sticking ring on No3, ive seen that before with bikes that have sat a while. If so theres a good chance running it will free it up, you could pour a small amount of oil down number 3 and see if it gives a better result. Or, the valve clearances have closed up. Its a not a small job doing all 20 valves, and its cams out so some people tend to ignore it. My engine had a severely worn exhaust valve (on cylinder 3 also) from it closing up due to someone not checking the shims at the service intervals. Also, where did you find your headlight cowl, I'm super jealous. 😆😆

Yeah, I figured it could be any of those things you mentioned. The cylinder walls look good but there's a lot of carbon on the top of the pistons so I'm thinking the combustion chamber will look similar. I'm fine with starting it (and it has run....next video). I've got to head to work next week so I've got some videos lined up on scheduled release. I've been on the hunt down for unobtainium and found a guy in Florida who was restoring a 1988. I picked up a box of parts from him and was able to get my whole headlight assembly sorted out as well. There's some minor damage on the fairing but it's totally repairable. Got a new windshield too. :o)

@@KensWorldRestorations The headlights were a bit wobbly weren't they? My ones were the same, and upon closer inspection someone had lost the springs on the adjusters that stop them moving around, and had used springs out of Bic ballpoint pens instead🤣🤣🤣 By weird coincidence my local dealer had four of the correct springs sitting gathering dust in their storeroom, along with a brand new headlight shell. Score👍.

@@uhtred7860 not the springs…the round ball head sockets were broken. Was able to swap them out from the spare I bought.

Spoiler Alert: got the engine running and I'll post that video soon. Compression is back up to 150psi on all cylinders, which is normal (165psi static at sea level) at my altitude/temp.

@@KensWorldRestorations I love these old yamaha's, I brought my first 1989 FZR exup in 2010 then brought a 1990 in 2015 because I crashed my 89, still have them both in my barn but I ride a 2001 5jj R1 now. I would love to restore one of my old fzr's. I will get round to it one day! Good luck with the build man 👍
