We like to share all the different types of gear we are trying out. That way if someone else is thinking about using it, they can at least get a feel for it first. In that spirit, we recently noticed that the tappet cover was leaking on Snowball. You might say "impossible, they just finished that motor." Or you could be saying, "HA! Those guys are idiots! They can't even install a tappet cover!" Well, I assure you... We were equally disappointed! And yes, we do know how to install a factory tappet cover, but man can those little beast let you down!
So when we had a second, we decided to go ahead and pull the pump and go after the tappet cover and hopefully , put an end to the oil field streaming down the drives side of Rusty's block.
Those of you that have been with us for a while will know that we have already posted a review of a billet tappet cover that we picked up off ebay and installed on one of the other trucks. Well, there were some pro's about it and some con's to it. The pro's were the fact that it had a single o-ring, was nice and ridged, and kept the side of the block leak free, but the con was that it didn't have large enough breather holes and they were located fairly low on the tappet cover. The result was that we got oil dripping from the blow by tubes. The guy who owns the truck lives in a neighborhood and so we had to get creative in finding other places to vent the motor.
So this time we decided to look for other options. We came across the G&R billet cover and really like the higher placement of the vent holes, the baffle design, and the larger vent holes. We felt like all of these things might make up for the higher cost and maybe keep oil from dripping out of the breather tubes. So far the results have been excellent!
