He puts a lot of thought into it... I'm hoping he's saving it all up for a very special episode where the router touch probes the Omes 300 without asking, and the Omes 300 gets depression and an eating disorder which makes it shape only frowny faces, and feels guilty because in some ways it actually enjoyed the probing but the first edition of Machinery's Handbook said that that's a sin. Then the mill and the lathe teach the Router about boundaries, and teach the Omes 300 that although what happened was wrong, it didn't do anything wrong, and that it's OK to have feelings about other machine tools. Then the Omes 300 and the router make a rainbow drawing.

The router knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't, by subtracting where it is, from where it isn't, or where it isn't, from where it is, whichever is greater, it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance sub-system uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the router from a position where it is, to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position where it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event of the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has required a variation. The variation being the difference between where the router is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too, may be corrected by the GEA. However, the router must also know where it was. The router guidance computance scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information the router has obtained, it is not sure just where it is, however it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subracts where it should be, from where it wasn't, or vice versa. By differentiating this from the algebraic sum og where it shouldn't be, and where it was. It is able to obtain a deviation, and a variation, which is called "air"

I know this is a comment on a two year old video. Thanks for providing me with entertainment that makes me feel like I've done something. Someone commented about how do you know if your probe is still accurate. I'd say that's what G53 is for. With the orientation of your probe, you should probably be able to pick up on the back right corner of your table (or something premanently mounted to it) and compare it to recorded machine (G53) coordinates. That location should always be the same. If you check it and it's not the same, your probe offset changed. It would be most accurate if you started at the same machine coordinates every time. Thanks again. Just subscribed. Watched everything from the original no voice over tig pedal until this point and still going.

There was a great camera plugin for mach 3 (and possibly mach 4) You get yourself one of those cheap $10 "borescope" cameras from ebay, make a little clamp to stick it on your Z axis, then get it lined up so top of the image is Y+ etc. First time out the gate you spot drill a small hole in some scrap, center the camera on the hole and you've got your offset, whack that in the plugin and from then on all you've got to do is jog the camera over a corner or whatever and hit go. It was certainly good to within 200 microns or so, which was great for the sort of work I was doing, which was mostly contouring around print that had already been mounted on the board. If you printed 2 reference marks you could either use them to square the stock (pivot around the origin) or use them to calculate G code scale / rotation provided you weren't overly reliant on arcs.

Wes Johnson Yep, It's just stuck in a tight plastic clip. He can pull it up and out by hand if he wants, or if it makes contact in z- direction, it'll just get pushed up out of the way. Doesn't seem too ideal to me, but I'm guessing he doesn't have an ATC and $4000+ to blow on an automated spindle-mount version.

Take a look at G28.1 and G28 for setting your G54 offset. Also you can do G10 L20 X__ Y__ Z__ P1 where you define how far off your probe is from where you want to be. Like if your probe was 50mm to the right, 10mm back, and 5mm too high... then you could do a G10L20 X50 Y-10 Z5 P1... and your machine would be like "Oh... that's where it is..." so then you do a G0 X0Y0Z0 and you are there... presuming you didn't hit anything.

So the thing I don't get is why not make a small plastic holder for the touch probe that fits into the spindle? The plastic would insulate the probe from the grounded chassis, and you wouldn't have to bother with offsets (other than the diameter of the probe). Is it just because that would require a tool change?

Tony you may already know this. However to take it a step further with offsets. You can use the (#) macro to probe off of. Thus stating to the controls probe (#) if X-0 and if Y -0 = (specified amount), run specified offset. Saying simply saw blacks maybe .002-.004 diff....from each other. Or even further off. But that can be preprogrammed in your Marcos. Just an idea say you can just simply prove and run. VS probing finding your black is off then re-zeroing.
