It was day 1 of IRE when we came across the Owens Corning booth and spotted a fun little challenge that caught our attention. The shingle pull test. We recently started doing some shingle quality tests in our Roofing Insights warehouse and one of them was a pull test, so we though't we'd continue our research here at the IRE in Dallas, TX. We noticed that the OC pull test station did not have it's most similar competitor (the IKO Dynasty shingle) so we went over to the IKO booth for a sample. When we compared OC Duration to the IKO Dynasty, the IKO product seemed to hold up a little bit better than OC in this particular test. However, we had mixed results in our own tests at home which leads us to believe both shingles are neck to neck in their quality and build.
Thank you OC and IKO for letting us have a field day and showing our Roofing Insights family that your products are superior, especially when compared to a few VERY large and well-known brands.

Great video! I'm in the market for a new roof. Cant wait for the full test video of all the main good shingles. This will help me pick the right shingle for my roof. Please do a test on underlayment too. They have to many out there and I'm not sure which one is good to buy very confusing. Keep up the great work and thank you for educating us.

Here in Alberta we were using OC Duration and now we can’t get them anymore. So now we have no choice but to shop local and are now using IKO Dynasty. They are both awesome for wind resistance. Both have there advantages when it comes to installing. IKO are easier to peel apart. The OC have the strip on the front which I prefer for blow through. The OC bundles are smaller and easier to handle. OC has less granular loss. IKO Dynasty colours are really nice.

I tried out IKO and the dynasty.... the granule loss affected our ability to walk 8/12 so bad that we had to use cushions on the entire roof. If they fixed that issue, it would be a different story. I do not care how good their nail strip is if the granule loss continues to affect the installation like that.

I installed an IKO roof this year. I got on the roof to inspect the work and busted my ass walking the valley. It was so unexpected. What I was told is that they put extra granules in the package called “hitchhikers” to level out the bundles so the shingles don’t get misshaped while they are stacked on the pallet. Either way I’m not really a fan.

GAF is typically the best when it comes to that in my experience. Was it installed using their method? Storm guard along the eaves, rakes, in valleys? Open valley with valley metal? Etc etc. All of that matters. You need to install x of x of their products to get the best results. I work for a contractor that's old school. We hand drive nails. I haven't nailed OC or Certainteed. In my experience 95%GAF and a random IKO or Tamko

Hi Dmitry, I just had IKO Dynasty shingles put on my home(20 sq. hip roof). However, they put the Marathon Plus AR 3 tab on hip & ridge. The roofer said for $400 he will change it to the Ultra HP high profile cap. Which he says is less than his cost. I'm mainly worried about wind resistance(live in South Louisiana). Do you think it's worth upgrading? Thanks bud!

Is there a way to do these tests once the tar strip has bonded? This is valuable to know for winter installs and for after a tar strip has failed but more important than this test would be to compare how these three products do once the tar strips has bonded. And 80mph gusts come through.

As a former OC employee, product presenter, and the co-creator of this Force Gauge test-I can confirm that this setup/execution is not how the test was intended. After performing this demo (along with 10+ others) in front of 100s of contractors during my tenure, I can already tell you why the numbers are what they are in this video. Additionally, the story and explanation of the test, the true benefits of Duration, and what this test actually illustrates is absent. The important factor to capture is when the INTEGRITY of the nailzone is compromised--this estimates the failure point of the Shingle. The dynasty may be harder to rip off of this board-due to the strip on the back-but I bet you the asphalt nail zone fails under less pressure. The point missing from all of this, is also the most prevalent-OC Duration is the Shingle that was manufactured with a nailgun TRULY in mind. The same cannot be said about the others. While everyone is slowly inching towards this idea--I am still baffled by it. Hit me up on LinkedIn, Dmitry. Great content, as always.

Roofing Insights - a lot can change in short time. In the 3 months since posting that original comment til now (when you replied), look at how much has changed in the world. I am sure a lot has changed since I have parted ways with OC, so I am not going to speak for them. You caught them underprepared and executing a remix of what is a valid test (normally using machines in a laboratory/controlled environment). None of these trade show demos are accurate representations of what a life-cycle of a roof entails--they are parlor tricks--good news: there are a lot of houses that need roofs.....companies should accurately present the company/product/facts and let the homeowners decide.

I appreciate your efforts in making these tests but this whole test is predicated on sealant failure happening first. It is also highly variable when you guys have to yank on the shingle as well as the entire nail pulling out with the pull tests. I will also say, in all of my roof inspections I've never seen a nail come out with a blow off if the decking is in good condition.
@saferoofing6779
@saferoofing6779 4 жыл бұрын
This is a good comment. We are a roofing company, and we have observed the same thing. First, the sealant needs to fail, and some shingles have better sealant than others. For example, in the past, we have used some GAF shingles and their sealant was extremely good. Second, it also depends on where you put the nails. High nails will decrease the wind-resistance significantly, period. We have used GAF, IKO, Malarkey, BP and CertainTeed shingles in the past six years and 0 wind blow-offs. Some of the shingles have a large nailing zone and others don't, but the end result is the same (for us). This is mostly to do with two things: accurate nailing and we pay attention to the weather. No winter re-roofing, partially because the sealant won't seal properly.
@Papa_Bird
@Papa_Bird 4 жыл бұрын
Safe Roofing we’re GAF master elite and have 6 nailed shingles (in the line) since inception. None of my roofs have had blow offs and any failures of architectural shingles I’ve seen is from improper nailing.. Not structural failure from guys ripping shingles off.

Just playing devil’s advocate here. Wouldn’t the sealant failure be more likely to happen when sticking to large granulars, or micro vs sealing on a smooth cloth strip? Isn’t that painting 101

O.K. So, These guys are yanking the shit out of the scale at about a 115 degree angle and the nails are pulling out of the holes on some of the tests. It's like torqueing a bolt. You have to pull nice and steady to get a good reading, and these guys can't do that. Of course the nail will pull through, and yeah, the nail will pull out of the piece of whatever that sheathing is when there's 20 nail holes around the one that you just sank. If you pull 90 degrees to the sheathing surface with a nice graduated pull, and use a fastener that won't pull out of a worn-out piece of plywood, then I think you will be able to get some consistent results. I'm sure O.C.'s quality control doesn't test their shingles like they did at the booth! Thanks a lot for the video, and keep trying to keep everyone honest!

I’m being forced to install a Dynasty roof.. suppliers up here in Alberta are having a hard time getting shipments from Owens Corning. I’m going to install this roof and monitor it. My biggest issue with IKO (Cambridge) is they seem to have a mind of their own when it comes to sealing. I was told IKO improved its bond material, so I guess we’ll see with this next roof... the weather is warm right now and they should seal almost right away if they’re as good as Duration.

What about push test-- wind, seeing how the nail area is so thin- it is the weak point by design, in error, where the common bond does not extend under the nail zone quite far enough for added strength. I don't want to believe GAF is far into planned obsolescence. The Nail did its job but the shingle ripped as easy as it does. Come on, GAF, Yall can do better. That said... It's amazing what they do, meeting the need, in a complex world of balance.

I have been nailing on shingles since before roof guns were used. The only blow-offs I ever experienced were on a golf course in windy location near the ocean using Elk shingles ( not my choice!) We use CertainTeed shingles and the only issue we've ever had is color related. It happened more than I would like but the rep response immediately and has paid us to remove and replace entire roofs completely, including labor and waste. They make a good product with a good warranty and I have never heard of premature aging, at least not from any of my previous customers. Problem I see with the pull test they are using is how can the force be consistent when it is a human body pulling on that piece of equipment? when did make sense to have a machine that is set to a certain force and then the results would be accurate

Installed iko on my house in 2004 but always had patch and renail till 2015 i finally replaced them with a reputable brand because they were shot, iko is not worth the money but to us roofers they certainly job security , cant believe they sell enough of these trash shingles to stay in business

As I said in another response, Massachusetts the CertainTeed rep Don C response to our concerns immediately and has paid for us to replace entire roofs due to color inconsistencies. Regarding IKO, my experience (40 years) is that they are prematurely and have a bad reputation. Regarding second chances, why risk it. What if your customer does their own research and sees the history? I know certain teed in GAF and all the big shots have had issues so maybe that defeats my point. Most customers are busy and don't want to spend their spare time researching and if you have a good reputation they trust your opinion.

This is flawed. How many nails have been pounded into that board throughout the day(s)? A spectator tries to point this out during the video but is cut off. Perhaps a new board was used, but I'm assuming not. Exclude GAF from the title since they were not part of the test.

Yeah but max payout on a IKO warranty is $40sq. That won’t cover dump and tear off. At least OC pays for 100% shingles, accessories, and top dollar for labor.

Hey Texas Roofer - After consultation with our roofing community and to better reflect IKO’s commitment to our homeowners, we have recently updated our Limited Warranty. Yes, I personally had a lot of issues with shingle not sealing. Another roofer in my area got hosed by them big time, they refused to stand behind the product, the color was a mess and the glue strips were a complete failure.

What makes OC the worst shingle in your opinion?
@arnimkrause5696
@arnimkrause5696 3 жыл бұрын
Barry you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to OC. I've put lots of shingles down in my days and OC is amazing. They adhere to each other almost instantly. They are the best I've ever nailed down and and I've done lots. And I noticed a distinct smell to them. They smell like pitch when handling them which explains a lot why they seal together as quick and well as they do. What is pitch you ask? Pitch is a coal based tar while regular tar which most shingles if not all other shingles are is a oil based tar. I can say this because as a commercial/industrial flat top roofer of 25 years I fixed and tore off a lot of pitch tar roofs and pitch tar is a smell you never forget. Some of these roofs have been on a building for 50 years. Flat top Pitch tar roofs will get a split in them as a normal tar roof will as well over time but the difference is a pitch roof will seal itself when the sun hits it on many occasions where as a normal tar roof will not. The point that I'm making here is if the tar in OC shingles has pitch in not only the seal line that bonds the shingles together but the entire shingle itself then this will make OC one of the best shingles on the market period. With that being said IKO are one of the worst shingles on the market. Quit trying to be an expert buddy! I've probably forgotten more about roofing than most people in the roofing industry know!
