I’ve been interested in GameMaker. It’s very beginner friendly and it would be cool to see how far the limits of it can be stretched.

I feel that Unity and Unreal are the best to learn because you can use them to make projects of either small scope or larger scope; and also because these are the two main engines that companies might want you to learn; which is why I would like to learn more about these two engines.

I am voting for Unity for its simplicity and how it's beginner-friendly. But I would also like to see UE5 because that's seems to be the future.

I’ve heard that Godot is more beginner friendly. I’d love to know the definitive answer. I’m really torn between these two. I have no coding experience so I’d like to stick with the chosen engine for a while.

@@Mopsiethis is no indication of its learning curve, but I started using Godot just because it's open source and I don't have to pay to remove a watermark. I learned to make relatively simple games within a week using Godot, and with Godot 4 recently releasing, it's shaping up to be a pretty powerful and easy to use game engine.

These are nice and challenging first projects. I can think of many other games that are easier to start with, but I guess you picked the ones that introduce the designer to all aspects of game design.

definitely open to other opinions. I have been interested in this for a while, but am trying to get familiar with open source programming just to enter the field (been learning python on the side). So I for one would be happy to hear your insight

Sounds like an awesome series I’ll be tuning in for. I want to make games as a hobby but get stumped on the ideas side. I’ve only ever really tinkered with map mods in games like SC. You’re dead right that it’s best to just practice on basic games first to develop the essential skills. I’d like to see you try with UE5, or Gamemaker. But here’s a weird request, could you make one in Apple’s Swift Playgrounds on iPad? Lots of people own iPads and it’s powerful enough to let you build a full app.

I would have liked to say Unity just because I was trying to invest more time in it - but after making a quick peruse of a few of the engines from 5:25, leaning now toward Godot for the five games.

For a nice challenge, make one of them in the Adventure Game Studio (AGS) engine. The engine is primarily designed for retro 2D Point and Click adventure games, but is more than capable of making all of the games you listed. Would be fun to see them in a retro 80's or 90's style.

I would suggest using open 3D Engine in your new series its an engine that was used for triple A releases that has since become open source but does not seem to have a particularly large userbase.

Votes on godot since it's open source which means if you wanted to develop your skills further in game engine development you possibly could. But i reckon you should still try the other popular game engine and see how complicated the process is for each engine for beginners at least.

Unity is more hard but Better for Indie devs . Unreal if you want to flip assets and do third person. AI can help you with coding but not debug the game you will still have to use your brain. At the end , your experience in making your indie will help you out no matter what game engine you use

I’d love to see Unreal but only using blueprints. I am learning so many different skills at the moment, so learning code seems super daunting. Blueprint will still require learning, but it seems similar to more visual things like video editing which I’m already learning.
