@@spencersss1251 D&D clearly don't even understand what it means to be a king. Renly was only well loved because he could be a puppet and was meek, all you could want when you're trying to gain power and ascend the hierarchy so to speak. Being loved by your people and having friends in high places doesn't make you a good king but what does is actually maintaining order and ensuring the survival of your very civilization. Stannis literally one of the greatest military minds of westeros, in the show literally pulls up to winterfell with no military formation and gets stomped. In the book's Stannis knows it is pretty much suicide to head-on attack winterfell, that's why he has mance rayder stirring up problems in winterfell right now.I feel like the show writers hate Stannis so much they literally killed off important characters and destroyed plot points just to get him out of the TV show faster.

Given Stannis well-etstablished love for his daughter, I have a feeling that if Shireen does get burned at the stake, it's going to be without Stannis's knowledge. Like, Melisandre reads Stannis's letter and decides to burn Shireen to "help" Stannis even though he probably doesn't need the help. I can't in any way justify Stannis would do it without him behaving incredibly OOC. Especially since she's his only child.

I imagine several scenarios: 1. Stannis orders the deed himself in a final desperate move when the Others breach the Wall. 2. Melisandre does it after reading the Pink Letter and thinking Stannis is dead, either to resurrect him… or Jon Snow. 3. Melisandre uses a glamor to make someone look like Davos and then does it per the word of the king from his hand. 4. Shireen doesn’t burn but is actually drowned by Patchface.

Few great quotes about Stannis showing his greatness character. Tywin Lannister about Stannis : “I have felt from the beginning that Stannis was a greater danger than all the others combined." "This is Stannis Baratheon, he'll fight to the bitter end and then some." Ned Stark about Stannis : Ned found it hard to imagine what could frighten Stannis Baratheon, who had once held Storm's End through a year of siege, surviving on rats and boot leather while the Lords Tyrell and Redwyne sat outside with their hosts, banqueting in sight of his walls. Robb Stark about Stannis : "If Bran can not lord of Winterfell before me. Renly can not be king before Stannis." Ser Davos to the Iron Bank : There is only one reliable leader left in Westeros ! Stannis ! He's got the bithright. He's in his prime. He's a tried and tested battle commander. And he doesn't just talk about paying people back he does it ! Samwell Tarly about Stannis after saving the wall : "Few of the birds that Maester Aemon had sent off had returned as yet. One reached Stannis, though. One found Dragonstone, and a king who still cared."

I also love the exchange he has with his Maester when they're writing the letter to the people and Lords of Westeros about the Baratheon Childrens' bastardry, and he insists that Jamie Lannister, a man he hates, be referred to by his full title of "Ser Jamie Lannister", because "Whatever else he is, he is a knight." At the same time, he insists the part about referring to Robert as his "beloved brother" be stricken out, because he truly had no love for his brother. Even for the sake of a harmless courtesy, he will not lie for any reason. If that sort of thing doesn't make you respect him as a character, nothing will.

@@wolverineminer No. He wouldn't sacrifice anyone if he thought it might work. Please read the books, and re-read them if you've read them. Show Stannis: Burns his heir to melt some snow. Book Stannis: “A sacrifice will prove our faith still burns true, Sire,” Clayton Suggs had told the king. And Godry the Giantslayer said, “The old gods of the north have sent this storm upon us. Only R’hllor can end it. We must give him an unbeliever.” "Half my army is made up of unbelievers,” Stannis had replied. “I will have no burnings. Pray harder.” He refuses to burn *some random fucker in his army* and says PRAY HARDER which is just amazing, by the way, lol. He also refuses to allow his men to rape and pillage when they conquer anything, I recall him castrating any of his men that choose to do so, which is extremely rare in Westeros. He has many good virtues. But, Stannis definitely has a chip on his shoulder, is bitter and sees a lot of things as slights. Many of them are slights. Some of them are not. For example, while Robert giving Dragonstone to Stannis and Storm's End to Renly can definitely be seen as understandably unfair and a punishment to Stannis (which is how Stannis takes it) there's another angle to look at it as well: the heir to the Iron Throne under the Targaryens was the Lord of Dragonstone. As Robert had no heirs when he usurped the Mad King, Stannis was his heir, thus giving him Dragonstone. Stannis never thinks of it this way though, showing his mindset and how he broods on things too much. I think it's very likely it was meant as a slight, but, the fact that this alternative possibility never even occurs to him is indicative of his mindset. As for entitlement to the crown: "It is not a question of wanting. The throne is mine, as Robert's heir. That is law. After me, it must pass to my daughter, unless Selyse should finally give me a son. I am king. Wants do not enter into it. I have a duty to my daughter. To the realm. Even to Robert. He loved me but little, I know, yet he was my brother. The Lannister woman gave him horns and made a motley fool of him. She may have murdered him as well, as she murdered Jon Arryn and Ned Stark. For such crimes there must be justice. Starting with Cersei and her abominations. But only starting. I mean to scour that court clean. As Robert should have done after the Trident."

The most fundamental misunderstanding D&D had was that they thought Stannis pursued the throne due to “ambition". In reality it is a sense of duty and obligation. The laws say that as the oldest make heir of the most recent legitimate ruler Robert (recognized by the church and to hold the seat of power and fealty of the rulers of the kingdoms) he is king. If he ignores his duty and the next person to sit the throne results in the suffering of the people or more importantly don't recognize the threat of the great other, all of those deaths and possibly the end of life as they know it is on his hands. If Stannis didn't pursue the throne in his eyes best case people suffer worst case the fucking world is covered in ice and ends. I firmly believe Stannis wasn't pursuing power due to ambition pr because he felt it was his turn but because it was his god damned duty. And bless his soul for that. @@ceilingfanenthusiast6041 To expand, Mama Westerling is the one that suggested the honeytrap of Robb as a way to earn brownie points with Mac Daddy Lannister. Her family used to be hot shit generations ago, but their gold mine ran dry and the family fell into ruin. She was forced to marry the son of a foreign merchant, a Spicer, to stay solvent. This further tarnished her family name (marry upjumped commoners) in the eyes of hte nobility, and thus further ruin her children's marriage prospects. So when Robb Stark, the traitorous King in da Norf hisself falls into her lap... she encourages her daughter to take "good care" of their "guest." I suppose she told her daughter they should abandon the vile Lannisters and join the Starks, but couldn't just pledge themselves willy nilly: Jeyne needed to "soften up" Robb. Meanwhile, she sends a letter to Tywin detailing her plan (which Tywin promptly approves then begins cranking up Walder Frey/Roosey Goosey) and asking for both a preemptive pardon (declaring for Robb as part of the ruse) while demanding "proper" marriage prospects for her children after the dust has settled. Then there is Robb. He doesn't just howl "hellooooooo nurse" and tap dat ass. He'd been resisting Jeyne at first, but then he hears about Winterfell, Theon, and his barbecued brothers. Racked with not only despair but guilt (no Theon, no scorched Starks... AKA he feels responsible for their "deaths") he finally gives in to Jeyne's seduction and seeks comfort in her "arms." The next morning, he's horrified at what he's done and let's Mama Cuntling twist his arm into a marriage pact. He most definitely feels like this is something Daddy would have done as well. Nedd and his honor! I'll "honor" his memory by marrying this girl I shagged. I can't stress enough that Jeyne was just as much a victim here. She really did seem to love Robb and be all for joining Da Norf, but Mama was just using everyone as pawns to restore her family's "honor." In the end, her son/Jeyne's brother is killed at the Red Wedding defending Grey Wind and Jeyne herself is married off to some Lannister bastards. Oi, and Mama Cuntling was also slipping her daughter some birth control/abortifacient in the guise of a "fertility treatment" to make sure she didn't get preggers with the Prince in da Norf. Upon realizing what her mother has done, she is furious and refuses to speak to her anymore. She really did love Robb. So it wasn't simply a case of hormones, pig headed notions of "honor," or even a moment of weakness. We have guilt and despair, honor, greed, ambition, love, and more... It's not simply "Robb done fucked up" but paints a clear picture of how this young child out of his element could be manipulated (daddy issues), why he lets himself be manipulated (guilt), and why he was being manipulated in the first place (greed). But the show throws all that away by reducing it all to "wuv." God. Damnit.

@glanni

Eh, idk. It would be a shot in his balls because the show is associated with him and the show being bad can also hurt his carreer in the long run. But Bran being king isn't bad you know? When George says it's gonna be a bitter sweet ending he could mean that humankind can only continue by having a weird entity rule them, one that possesses the most powerful greenseer it can get, and probably "Bran" will look for the next successor and bring him to court. That democracy ending is also bs. That entity will probably possess the next kid who has great abilities as soon as Bran is old. My point is, from a theme and message standpoint it's not only genius but terrifying, not boring like in the show. And one thing I was just reminded of, the story is secretly about different dark entities trying to get the world into their claws. The dragons used to rule (and there's probably another entity behind those, Quaithe all but manipulates Dany's journey, and in the Shadow there is probably some lovecraftian being waiting, and the Valyrians may have learned their stuff from people from Asshai or the Shadow itself), as well as the others before them (there is probably no Night King, but an entity similar to what Melisandre calls "the great other"), and the children of the forest even before that (they have this three eyed crow entity that collects memories, probably to know how to play off these other parties, Ice and Fire, waiting until the great war on the battlefield that's called Westeros). So in fact they probably take back the world after everyone else is cleared out. So in a way, there isn't only the small wheel of noble houses fighting over the west, but also a big wheel in form of shadow entities in the background who try to maneuver them.

One of the best motivations of Stannis was cut out of the shows story, where he remembers and explains to Davos how he nursed a goshawk to health when he was a boy. Calling it "Proudwing", she would perch on his shoulder and eat from his hand, but wouldn't soar. Robert taunted him and called the goshawk "Weakwing", while Thunderclap, Roberts own falcon, was a strong bird and got what Robert sent it after. Stannis's uncle said that Stannis was making a fool of himself for using Proudwing and told him to choose a new hawk for falconing and Stannis did and was more successful, with him abandoning Proudwing for his new bird. This is among the reasons he abandons his Faith in the Seven(of which he had little, especially after seeing his parents ship drown miles offshore from Storms End)and instead chose Rh'llor. In the book of "Storm of Swords", Stannis uses every possible angle to find a way to NOT kill Edric Storm. His wife says that Robert stained their marriage bed(which he broke in with a cousin of Selyse's), while Stannis says that was Roberts fault, not Edrics. When Robb AND Balon die, Stannis begins to consider it, but Davos reminds him two is not three(for the three leeches Melisandre burned)and Stannis seizes on it, saying only if Joffrey died now, at the height of his power, would he believe Melisandre could awaken the dragons. Even after, when Davos tells him that Joffrey is dead, Stannis tells Melisandre: "Swear this is the only way or I swear, I will strangle you with my own hands." Stannis of the show: "Robb Stark is dead? Okay, lets kill Gendry." D&D are shitty writers and they never explained Stannis to Stephan Dillane, so he never got attached to the character and, apparently, hated playing him. So stupid...

They ruined Stannis. They made him do uncharacteristic things, from asking Melisandre for sex on the beach to burning his daughter. They did it all so they could hand his storyline over to Jon Snow, since younger characters aligning closer to the typical destiny-driven protoganist archetype are all these fools known as D&D could understand as characters. Haven't been able to get over how badly they screwed Stannis and unlike many of the show-watchers who complained that the show turned to shit after the last season, I've said over and over again that the downward spiral of the show started when Stannis was ruined.

My major complaint for Stannis' character is his relationships with Davos and Melissandre. He trusts both of them in the show, but the show gives this idea that Stannis is just pussy-whipped by Melissandre and reluctantly listens to Davos, when Davos is super correct on his criticism or counsel. In the book he appreciates Davos truly, he's like Stannis' only real friend. He even invites him out of prison to give him advice because all the other lords gave him such terrible advice. All of this is cut out from the show of course. The other thing that I hate that they just streamlined is the shadow-monster assassin scene. They made it explicit that Stannis fucked Mel (only implicit in the books) and made Stannis knowingly kill Renly, which is just completely wrong and not in the book at all. Stannis intended to win Renly on the field, relying on the fact that Renly outnumbered him 2 to 1 and had mostly armored cavalry, so Renly was cocky and assumed he was going to win, and Stannis intended to use his arrogance against him. Then at night, before the battle, Stannis is asleep and can't awake, and he dreams that he kills Renly. He feels guilty afterwards, but reasons that he was sleeping when Renly died, so he can't have done it, even though he dreamed it. Something subtler than "LOL shadow baby" is going on in the story. Also this character assassination of Stannis as a bad leader or king. That comes from two people: Littlefinger, who thinks that Stannis would mess with his business, and Renly, who is a narcissistic asshole. Even Olenna says, that Renly was a stupid boy who thought looking good and being liked was enough to make you a good king. What a moron.

Devan says I thrashed and cried out, but what does it matter? It was a dream. I was in my tent when Renly died, and when I woke my hands were clean. " Also, the fact that Stannis had his men chopping down trees to make siege weapons and groundworks makes it seem like Stannis didn't know about the shadow babies. Why go through the effort of choosing a battlefield, making a plan for a battle and then preparing for the siege of Storm's End that would follow if he knew Melisandre would just use shadow magic to kill Renly to prevent the battle and then again to kill the castellan of Storm's End to prevent the siege?

Vmac1394 I too interpreted it the same- great minds think alike, yes? 🧐🤪 Excellent point on Stannis’ men continued progress on siege craft. As for the shadow assassins... I cannot see Stannis asking, & Melisandre wasn’t telling.

As honour and justice with Ned goes. In the books at the very end before he’s betrayed by Petyr, even he thinks about how he might have to trick some of the kingsguard to his side like Baristan. It makes him sick inside but knows it is what needs to be done. I believe in the end Ned is willing to be dishonourable if it’s the last resort.

In ACOK doesn't the creation of shadow babies literally shave ten years off of Stannis' life? Like Davos sees him the next day and hes visibly older. That's such a good visual metaphor for showing what he went thru, you know, that would work so well on a visual medium...

I want the unrealistic timeline where Stannis loses the Battle of the Ice and retreats mostly alone to the wall and somehow or another meets up with and becomes a White Walker and then leads a campaign against the Kingdoms, wreaking destruction on all those that betrayed his rightful rule and utterly destroying the living, enacting his final justice.

I swear the ending you made for stannis brought a tear to my eyes. Damn man. Just awesome. Stannis in the books and the show (because of the actor's acting mostly ofcourse) was my favorite and I was was so mad that his arc was so poorly written for the show from the beginning. But this was the best for him to end tragically. Thanks

33:01 The impression I got from the last book, especially from Val's warning to Jon, was that Shireen's basically a Greyscale Plague handgrenade just waiting to go off, and, whatever his ultimate fate, Jon all but pulled the pin in his last chapter.

If stannis dies in the book I have had this feeling for a while that it will happen to the south. I think his death will be basically what happens to Randall tarly in the show. It fits stannis's character to a tea. Kind of like rorschach from the watchmen, he would rather die before he compromises his ideas. the whole season 5 arc was terrible. Stannis would have stepped on the pyre himself. I just pretend that s5-8 were a bad dream. Stephen dillane did play the character to the best of his ability, shame the show runners disliked the stannis character.the reason I thought this theory is in the book, stannis has dreams, or visions of being burned and consumed by fire and the crown. I feel hell would freeze over before stannis kneels to danerys.

@@KellieDoll28 I know but wouldn't her closest living relative actually be Jon snow? I know the baratheons have targ lineage but are still a separate family. And stannis and Robert along with other houses unseated them from their claim. They do use their targeryan lineage to strengthen their claim.

@@KellieDoll28 he will soon be resurrected. And just because stannis and daeny are related doesn't mean stannis will Bend the knee. Stannis by right is the rightful heir unless he dies then the next in line will be shireen. In which she will probably be burned by mel and selyse.

I have a feeling that Stannis eventually sacrificing Shireen might have something to do with her grayscale coming back up, since it was said that grayscale occasionally does that. Like, despite how desperate or dire his situation could be, he would still be totally opposed to it until he sees that shareen would die anyway, thus leading him to kill shareen, maybe even with his own hands and lightbringer to become azor ahai

19:00 scene (in humble opinion) use symbolism to frame Stannis as villian: contrast Stannis’ party to Renly’s party. Stannis: “red witch,” black horse, NW armor. Renly: crown of thorns, white horse, golden armor. Baratheon crown- antlers, not thorns.

If Shireen burns, it’ll be her choice. Perhaps her greyscale has merely been externally halted while insidiously spreading over her internal organs. Knowing her days are numbered, she takes the leap to appease R’hllor and meets a fiery, excruciating end out of her own sense of duty.
