Wanna know why publishers might not like Game Pass? Because it is essentially competition for the publishers. If you are a small game studio and you are developing a game would you rather lock into a contract with a major publisher that will probably take a huge cut of your profit and also take away some of your creative control, or would you rather sign a day one game deal with Game Pass for enough money to fund multiple games and it would seem that, on PC at least, you also aren't prohibited from selling on Steam as well.

@@Spyro_2 I am not OP but the way I see it, GP offers the most value to the young kid / teen or even streamer / content creators who can no life games and just churn and burn regardless of what the game is and just consume and move on its great. I recall as a kid I was all about renting games when I was a kid and blowing through them in a weekend game pass is clearly this for many, it does not need to be amazing but it’s even better if it is and I will admit there is some bangers on game pass but all in all out of the hundreds of games offered only 20 - 30 of games offered would be must buys for someone like me. Now let’s swap to a person with real life responsibility’s, a life, a GF / Fam / Career… and can average 6 - 8 hours of game time a week… well then games last a heck of a lot longer and often games that are not absolutely amazing fall off, or games require too much investment to get into and you just fall behind the curb you start to focus on a few games and work on any back log while waiting for the plethora of sales that happen on a quarterly basis to kick in to pick up the game you passed on at a fraction of the price. I definitely prefer MS's approach over Sony's. GamePass has enabled me to try so many new and different types of games that I'd ordinarily never have played, many of which have been from small/indie dev teams. For productions like that, GamePass immediately gets them a huge amount of exposure and a zero-friction way to play, while also netting a guaranteed payday from Microsoft. If GamePass really does balloon to $30+/mo, I'd love to see a dedicated lower-cost ID@Xbox-esque subscription tier to keep supporting that part of the market. I'll just shell out $60-70 for the heavy-hitters while stuffing my face with small-studio games in between.

personally I'm all for game pass for the value. I'm someone that is very poor and rarely have the money to spend on a full priced game (even indie sometimes), something like game pass for only like 15 bucks i get the chance to try out or play games i normally wouldn't be able too, and found some of my new favorite games that way. I see game pass as almost like a rental service it lets me try out games on my time and my budget and if i really like a game i will buy it so i can play it with out the subscription (I've done this with grounded, wastelands 3, and several others). Honestly the fact that the publishers don't like game pass is all the more reason for me to enjoy it, because that in turn means its significantly pro customer, because all a publisher cares about is making ALL the money. So if this saves me from spending 60+ dollars on a shitty cash grab that a publisher releases in a severely unfinished state and expects me to be grateful, then i am all for game pass frankly. You want my money AAA publishers? EARN IT WITH A FUN GAME-PLAY NOT MARKETING AND LIVE SERVICE GARBAGE...

My biggest concern with game pass is that everyone keeps saying it's a bunch of content for very little cost. Everyone says it's the best deal in gaming because it really is. You get a bunch of games for a really low price. And that's awesome, you as the consumer feel like you are cheating the system so you love it. But if everyone is "cheating the system" and getting this killer deal then either every game studio has a huge profit margin and game pass is exposing the real cost of a game or Microsoft is using this as a loss leader and pulling from their other branches to keep gamepass a float while they trap you in the ecosystem. Eventually they will want to make money. It just sounds like a financial bubble waiting to burst.

It is actually not that hard of a concept Let say you have 2 million subscribers. That's a guaranteed 30 million a month coming in games releasing or not. Let's say you release a banger like GTA6 or similar highly anticipated game and at the same time you release some dumpster fire like Gollum. That GTA6 is going to sell whether it is on GamePass or not because people are going to want a copy separate from the service in case they ever decide to cancel so you get your 30 million plus your traditional sales. Then you sell 80000 copies of Gollum so you only got like 3.5 million off of that now you have a way of mitigating that loss instead of just eating it because you have that guaranteed monthly income. Having a known amount coming in every month also allows for better project planning.

@@ecbald1921 You are right it does make for a great way to have a move consistent revenue scheme. And the more i was writing my response below the more I agree with you. This current system works well because of traditional sales being accounted for. That is the key to this whole thing. But I also would raise that you left out a very crucial aspect out of your calculation. You are not take into account if there is +100 games on game pass. So that major release of gta6 is not getting 100% of the revenue, they have to split that 30 million a month with some kind of revenue splitting scheme. And Microsoft will take their 10-30% take. The best way for them to make money is to let you get the base game and then they sell dlc that is not included with gamepass. Basically the system is just a big rent it before you buy it.

I say potentially as I have no idea what MS even offers these devs/studios so hard to say if games really wouldnt surpass the price Xbox pays if it was launched full price. IDK the market is weird and its reminding me of the gaming bubble, more customers every year but we still cant reach numbers we saw in the 360 days, especially player retention. They really need to see that brand name powers wonders like infinite and Scarlet/violets with massive pre orders and sales, all thats needed is quality to retain majority of said buyers which both failed to do. if only they didnt get rid of play testers to see what might be wrong. but thats just my opinion.

I feel like I am an outlier with Game Pass. I love it, I find new games I would have never tried if I had to buy them at full price, and if I like them enough I outright buy them. I don't try to burn through them before they leave the service, I don't have the time. Too many adult responsibilities For example "Decenders," I tried it on game pass and enjoyed it so much that I bought the physical version when it finally became available. I do get PS Plus also, and Sony locks you into that, unlike Microsoft. With Xbox Gold (or Game Pass Unlimited) you get two to three games for free each month and you get the same with PS Plus. The difference is with Microsoft if you end your subscription you can still play those games, they are yours, full games. Sony, on the other hand, if you end your PS Plus subscription those games are no longer playable or they become a demo. You have to buy the games or resubscribe to PS Plus. Meanwhile, Nintendo is sitting quietly on the side with their online service of classics from years past. Google fumbled the ball. And Amazon is like, "We got free games too. Come look... please?" Heaven forbid Steam or GOG get into some kind of similar service. I feel at some point these game services are going to become like the movie/TV services. More of them than you can afford to subscribe to and they all got great stuff.

It's an awful business model for consumers. It costs far more over an extended period of Time than it would to purchase select games individually. It would possibly only benefit people who play hundreds of different games for a few hours each. I've been playing Fallout 4 for years and years, if i was paying a subscription to play it then i would've paid for the game in whole several times over.

I mean, most people like myself don’t care about owning every game they want to play. I’ll buy games like starfield to own because those are games I’m really hyped about but this whole notion that I should own every single or even just most of the games I want to play is dumb and a waste of money for a lot of people

Everyone I know has canceled Game Pass as the value is awful for people working full time with families. We even all discussed the value & if you can play like 30-40 hours a week then sure but I'll play an evening hardcore & a few hours some days. I went 4 months playing only Sea of Thieves & just got sick of sinking £120 a year to play a game I already bought on sale

I like both. I like my big budget expensive AAA "boring" "uncreative" monster titles and I like being able to try a bunch of games I'm not sure about on gamepass. Though currently I'm in a similar vein as Charlotte in that I'm just giving Microsoft 15 bucks a month and never using the service.... also, it often doesn't have crossplay with steam and that is absurd and needs to change.

The question about gamepass thou is until when will they give out great deals Or give out deals thats good enough to cover what devs might have earned witout doing day 1? As i understand MS is subsidizing gamepass from inception and the foreseeable future.

I did not get value out of GP so I stopped… to be clear the games I really like are not on any service so I had to buy them. In the future if GP gets all the greatest games then I will have no choice but to sub up.

yup, gamepass is for casuals who hop around and dip there toes into anything. For hardcore gamers that know what they want the value isnt there, none of the good shit is on gamepass. At least Sony offers more compelling games with plus extra and premium.

@@R17759 what games keep you subbed? I ask because I have a great job but limited time (current game that is taking my time is FF 16 at about 2 hours a night / second night). I subbed up to GP Ultimate (I do not own a X/S but I was playing on PC and I am very aware the GP on console and GP on PC are not 1:1) at the time it was 3 months for $1 deal and I bought another 3 months until it was the release of Halo infinite (the game was a huge disappointment for me so I dropped the sub and never went back). During this period I dabbled on Forza Horizon 5 (it was fun for a week, clearly drivers are not my thing), grounded (not a fan), Dark Alliance (so happy I did not buy that game), sleeper citizen (would have never bought), Tunic (it was fun), trek to yomi (beat it and never looked at it again). My recent games I bought are FF 16, Street Fighter 6, ToTK, Diablo 4, I really liked Elden Ring and such all of these games are not on GP. I look forward for your commentary.

I said this on a similar story on a diff channel two weeks ago... Haven't the most vocal publishers been the big AAA ones? Ya know the same publishers rushing out unfinished full prices games after dev teams tell them it's not ready? A practice they've made standard operating procedure? The smaller publishers/devs have mostly said it has helped them. If this is true and it hurts the AAA guys and helps the smaller ones then I'm all for Game Pass

200m to develop a console seller of a game, isn't really all that unsustainable. At 11m sales, God of War Ragnarok has made AT LEAST 200m in profit. That's a huge return on investment!

I don't think you can look at the rise of mobile gaming and PC gaming and come to the conclusion that both Game Pass and the budgets for Sony games are equally "unsustainable", especially if we're talking in the long run. MS strategy is about putting GP everywhere while Sony's strategy is to set up a artificial paywall of 400-500$ if you want to play a SINGLE one of their exclusives day one. That worked for Nintendo (until it didn't and they had to innovate their strategy, killing off their home console business and very successful portable business in favor of a hybrid model that they are now stuck with), and it's still working for Sony, but in 10 years time, good luck in finding someone who will buy a entire console just for one game, when literally 95-99% of games out there are available everywhere with multiple ways to own or rent them.

I've haven't had much value on gamepass i've played way to many games for their libary to intrest me. I played and finished the halo collection. I finished guridans of the galaxy and some other games. I have so many games on blacklog that I have no reason to go to gamepass unless I get a code for a dollar a month or create a new email to get the 1 dollar a month. I don't really value the gamepass games Like I value the games I "own" on steam I think its beacuse I know I won't keep em.

I've definitely bought games on gamepass that I really liked. Especially if they aren't Xbox exclusives which means they won't stay in game pass forever. And I would have never bought them, let alone played them, without it. I'm not gonna be surprised when we see more price increases for gamepass. It's inevitable. But rn I'm happy with what I have. I just finished playing The Big Con, a game I never would have touched without gamepass. Simply because I just don't have that much expendable income to drop on every single game I'm interested in.

Game pass is ruining it for stores like GameStop as do digital sales. A lot of sales of games come from parents browsing for presents. These game stores offer older preowned games that make good opportunity for someone to get into a franchise and then buy the new game in the series. There are plenty of games and series I wouldn’t have played if they hadn’t been gifted. And plenty of games I will never play on game pass.
