Been listening for a decade+. Still such a brilliant show. I haven’t found a podcast that has an appreciation and understanding of everything video games. Hearing Sam and Justin talk about the game saves of EGM and the consoles, hard drives etc. they have at at the IGN offices is so incredible. IGN doesn’t get the recognition they deserve for what they do/ have done for the video game industry.

As someone who rarely uses his Switch undocked, I'm glad there aren't games that are tied to a dedicated handheld system. Having the option to take it on the go is great, but I mostly game at home and I want to use my giant TV screen.
@JGAbstract
@JGAbstract 3 жыл бұрын
I find the hand-held option is too uncomfortable to ever play it that way. The no contour body, the flat joycons on the sides, the position of the buttons/joysticks.. I just can't play it like that. Id rather prop it up and play with the pro controller. But the little stand is useless for anything other than a sturdy tabletop. So I just play it docked on the TV.

the Nintendo DS (including 3DS) was supported from 2004 - 2019 with first party releases, I can definitely see Nintendo iterating on the Switch for a long time, adding new features and mechanics and being creative in implementation (such as Mario Kart Live, Labo, RingFit) to keep things interesting

I think comparing Switch sales to DS and WII combined is not a good indication since that was 2 generations ago. A better comparison would be the 3ds and Wii U sales which are 75M and 11M respectively, while the Switch is at 63M and it's only it's 3rd year. So I do think they are in a better position selling one hybrid console then they were selling two 8 years ago.
@nyrisj
@nyrisj 3 жыл бұрын
I think what we're not seeing that may be what is bridging the Switch to Wii/DS sales gap are software sales. Anecdotally, only Nintendo and very few rare 3rd party games sold well on Nintendo's old consoles. Switch has 1st party games performing at even higher levels than before as well as 3rd party games doing incredibly well.

The way they described how unexpectedly good Cobra Kai is, which I might try watching now just makes me think about Doctor Sleep. It's the sequel to The Shining if u didn't know. I think it was way too under the radar. It's great, it explained to me what the Shining was to the characters, which I don't know if that was explained or even a thing in the original. It's such a cool sequel, plus Ewen Mcgegor, come on. If u haven't seen it, I recommend going and watching Doctor Sleep immediately. I had to show my friend as well and he was blown away by how much he liked it and how good it was. It's one of my favorite movies in general now and I'm not a big fan of The Shining. Be aware that there is a torcher seen that may scar u because of the victim and result. It really bothered me.

I can see the Switch Lite model becoming the new DS down the line. Then Nintendo going back to a 2 device system. The home console could be something they tried before with the WII U. Wheee the Switch Lite could work with the new home console but without the gamepad’s limitations. Unlike the Wii U the new home console wouldn’t need the Switch to play. As for the Switch Lite it wouldn’t need the new console to play. This way the home console can be a little more beefier then the Switch and run games at 4k/60fps. But the portable mode would be 1080p or something like that. Both devices share the same media. So you just buy one game or instead do what the PS3/vita had where buying certain games on the PS3 got you ps vita versions.

When the NES came out it absolutely was a powerhouse at over 3mhz (omg... I just typed that... it felt as strange as it looks:-) ). The SNES was TWICE the power!! They kind of were cutting edge considering the Famicom had a printer, online capability, and could even report stock prices.... how many computers had hard floppy discs in their home computers back then? Mine sure as hell didn't... but I was rocking dual 5.25 floppies holding 64k each! LoL I don't think Nintendo could stand toe to toe with Sony and Microsoft anymore. It's not because I don't think they're capable. I just think after 30 years of a certain back catalog their games just don't need it. With that being said.... how did you have an entire Nintendo segment pretty much kissing their ass without discussing the current joycon drift lawsuits and the news that came out this week? They have 80 million pads out there that are potential timebombs waiting to fail. Unless the media joins in putting pressure on them with customers this won't improve. We all know Nintendo can be heavy handed with their policies, lawsuits, and business practices so it really requires everyone to stop giving them the wiggle room to do anything except what is right. Especially charging 80.00 for replacement junk controllers.

Nintendo could not continue the Nintendo Wii line for one very simple reason actually two reasons. First the casual consumer had already purchased a Nintendo Wii and they were happy playing Wii sports. Remember many consumers only bought the system for a few games. Next you had the Hardcore players life meaning of us we weren’t buying games on our Nintendo Wii anymore. So if they had bothered to upgrade the platform the casual player would not have bought into the upgrade and there is a strong chance that the hard-core player would not have done so either. The Nintendo switch provides a unique opportunity where Hardcore players like the system but we would also like to have the opportunity to upgrade. In addition they sold many younger children on the system and guess what if an upgrade comes out they will bug their parents for one.

You can’t just ask is Nintendo selling more video game systems because that’s a potential to be a false positive. What if you sell more systems but you don’t make as much profit on each system you sell. The same is true for video games as well remember back when the Nintendo DS was popular it was very cheap to make a game for that system and if you could sell millions of copies of that game you probably make more money than you did now if you made a new game for the Nintendo switch. Now that does bring up one issue with the Nintendo switch many of those games that are really popular in that have sold millions are remasters. Look at how many games were for the Nintendo Wii U that ultimately came to the switch and sold gangbusters. Ironically one of the most popular switch games was originally made for the Nintendo Wii U. I’m talking about the legend of Zelda breath of the wild. It’s synonymous with the Nintendo switch but the game was originally made for the Nintendo Wii U.

There won't be a Switch Pro. It's nonsense talk now. It's too late into the cycle anyway, and to fracture the market with a more expensive option is something Nintendo just don't do. Even for Sony and MS it was a unique situation due to the sudden proliferation of 4K and HDR early in their cycle. I bet we'll never see the Pro concept ever again from anyone. As for an update, a Switch 2, definitely. I guess it will be around the 5 year mark, so early 2022 or perhaps late next year. Given its success, I could see it become like phones with a periodic update, especially as the bare console itself could be sold with controllers and any accessories. It would be a cheap upgrade in that sense. As for the Wii, its success was due to its novelty value appealing to a new audience. It actually died a quick death, manifesting with the disastrous WU. So Nintendo returned to a conventional gaming system to reclaim its ground.
