Monster Hunter world was a crazy leap forward for the franchise, I loved the old games back to Unite but after playing World it's genuinely difficult to go back. The series went from feeling very stuck in the past (in a kind of fun nostalgic comfy way) to ahead of other AAA devs in almost every way. Wow. Really stoked (and a bit surprised) to see all the love for Control in the comments! I knew people liked it, just wouldn't have expected it to be the main standout from this list... although it absolutely deserves it. Definitely one of the best new IP's of this millennium. I can only imagine how much bigger and better the next one will probably be since the first was a success. I just picked up Deathloop on PC and finished it not long ago, and it was a pleasant surprise too. I wish it had leaned into the time shenanigans a bit harder, but it still felt like a pretty fresh and novel experience.

So I restarted it from the beginning, and this time around I’m completely hooked. It’s really good. Not great, but good. Basically I was kinda playing it wrong, and was also too distracted at the time to dig into the story through item descriptions, which I normally really enjoy. Or to play around with mods, which are essential. I’m also really enjoying the Twin Peaks and X-Files influence, and even Ghostbusters! It feels like it should still reward players more for exploration, there’s a lot of unfulfilled potential. The puzzles are fun too, but feel a little half-baked. But now it’s got me hoping they’ll take it further with more games. And I need to play Max Payne!

hey falcon! great video, i absolutely loved control, one of the few games that managed to keep my attention long enough for me to finish it. with that being said, iterating is pronounced with i as in intern rather than i as in eye
@BeyondDreamTime
@BeyondDreamTime Жыл бұрын
Correct, partially - except, _"i as in eye"_ ? "Eye" has no "i" and "as in" means exactly that: *_"as in"_* so you'd pick a word that actually has an "i" *_in it,_* but is pronounced as "eye," like, for instance, "ironic" (sort of like people correcting others make mistakes, I guess, or "correcting" actual English usage based on weird American usage / Americanisms, but that's a whole other chapter and not the case here, "eye-terating" is not just wrong, but almost painfully tongue-twisting and weird, like making an extra effort just to get it wrong for some reason, since "it-erating" is easier and quicker to say). So, for (another) example, you don't say _"a, or b, or c, or d, ... or i, ... or x, or z [or any other random letter that actually isn't __*_in your example word_* you get the point, I hope] as in sky,"_ you say _"y as in sky." "Words are hard," some like to say, but languages and speech is interesting fun, in different ways, depending on whether used correctly or incorrectly; in the former case it's fun _as in_ [teasing :p] fascinating, in the latter case more as a sort of comedy of horrors, but either way, without words, language(s), and speech, we'd still only be grunting - and theories say, we (and our brains) may have never evolved beyond (grunting) animals. Obviously some evolve more than others (on individual levels, not as groups, racial or national or any other) in terms of speech and language aptitudes (and since, the theory goes, that's tied so closely to overall intellectual development and evolutionary steps, maybe in terms of overall intelligence and aptitudes as well, to some extent). (Well, this was fun; turning four little words -or five, if we include "the trigger word," that _eye-watering "eye-terating"_ into a linguistic discourse. "Leave it to me...") (PS / edit - I know you meant "i pronounced as eye," but you did write _"i as in eye"_ :)

Great list, and I would have added Returnal to the honourable mentions list. Didn't reinvent the genre, but it had such a unique way of presenting the narrative to the player and had such a unique story to tell.

Yes but Returnal isn't exactly AAA, it was more of a AA game. And before you say it was a first-party Playstation game, yes that's sort of true but also no. Housemarque was acquired by Sony after Returnal came out, so Returnal was made by a then-independent developer that has only made AA (albeit really good AA) in the past. Housemarque's next game will be their first AAA game.

For me: I think Red Dead Redemption 2 will always be the epitome of what story driven narratives should strive to be. I've never felt so closely connected or concerned about a character like Arthur Morgan before. He's complex and detailed. He has strengths and weaknesses. He has flaws and faults. It all comes together as the story progresses and you're left with the scars of the remains. Few developers and writers are willing to put in so much effort, detail and consistency with their characters and story and playing RDR2 was such a treat to experience. I wish I could play the game for the 1st time all over again and regain that sense of exploration and discovery.

CONTROL, on the other hand, became one of my favorites of the generation. So fun. I stretched that game so far with how many jillions of times I went back to combat areas. Funny thing, at first I did not gel with the combat AT ALL and in fact quit the game, but restarted it because I thought the very beginning, when you're like, "Wait, where's that door I clearly saw through the glass a second ago?!", was awesome. And once I got the hang of the combat it became like all I wanted to do with my time. I didn't want the story to advance because I was worried the combat would go away or become less engaging but the opposite was true. I'd still drop whatever I was doing to play a round in that main research atrium again.

I'm just glad FF7R has the vastly superior action RPG combat system. The fact that they're changing the story is a big bonus. Let's be frank, anyone who is interested in an Final Fantasy 7 remake in the first place is highly likely to already know the entire original FF7 story by heart. I wish other remakes would delve more into improving not just the gameplay but the story too.

@calendar6526
@calendar6526 Жыл бұрын
@@joelanderson8062 I mean they are already using atb in og FF7. The one in FF7Re is just a logical improvement from their previous games. You can move in battle and normal attack doesn't consume atb bar (FF12), "more actions per turn" (FF13), seamless walking and encounter (FF15) and now you can do normal attack faster resulting in faster non boss encounter. As for the story, I won't say anything before they are complete. Tho yeah if you compare it to Trails where even though the story is not complete yet each game still has their own great story FF7Re kinda bland if it just stand alone like that.

Elden Ring is for me probably the best video game I have ever played. It binds everything I love about a Souls game with an even deeper sense of wonder and mystery be cause of it's open world and environmental and object based story telling, that you have to explore to understand the story and all of the endings and side stories and characters. It's a game, that you feel like you can replay a hundred times and there's always something new you haven't discovered or your cause of action takes the quest in another direction.
@georgen5882
@georgen5882 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that Elden Ring is not unique in just about anything it does. Open world? Nope. Souls like? Not even close. Weapons, armor, items, crafting, with very opaque quest design? No again. I don't hate Elden Ring, I even liked it enough to play through it three times, but I can't think of one thing that makes it unique in any way. I think from a gameplay and game design perspective Sekiro is miles ahead of Elden Ring in many ways. I don't hate it but I also don't quite understand the obscene love affair many have with it. There are games that are better than that one in my opinion, and even objectively there are many better.

True, though I think KH was the point where they created a truly timeless ARPG. Like I think 20 years from now KH2 will still be one of the best action combat systems in gaming. It can be played entirely through spamming attack, but it also has a ton of depth if you’re willing to break away from button mashing (which is necessary on critical diff) and it allows you to tap into that depth very smoothly
