It wouldn't be that hard to write a Serious Sam game today and make it funny: just have Sam behave like a barebones 2000 videogame protagonist and write everyone else like an overwritten modern game character who take themselves way too seriously, and just have them react to him. With proper comedic timing that could be hilarious, but no: instead let's do whatever this is.

I also feel like thanks to the game trying to be realistic, it actually hurts the visual clarity when fighting enemies, in SS 3 this wasn't an issue, because you were in deserts and and less cluttered streets so the enemies always stood out (underground dark areas excluded), but the fact that this game is so much more colorful and cluttered, actually hinders the gameplay, because the green grass and other stuff really obscures the smaller enemies a lot of the time when I first played the game, while I mostly enjoyed it, I really felt the lack of focused encounter designs, it really felt like quantity over quality, in First Encounter, Second Encounter and BFE you rarely felt like you have to instantly move backwards because you can't stand your ground, in SS 4 when you get the grenade launcher you instantly have to run back to the factory area or you'll get overwhelmed in about 20 seconds

Not only did they screw up visibility, the graphics look horrendous too. In their attempt to make realistic graphics they ended up with an unoptimized game that looks like a terrible asset flip. Had they simply gone for a Serious Sam 2 look none of this would have happened, unless of course all the talent left the studio.

10:51 you can use the classic crosshair color instead of the HP bar, if you can actually find it in the options menu

Really one of those franchises that got ruined by it's own reputation. People who think serious sam is dumb and mindless have never played the games in the first place. The first two games were very tightly designed. I mean, the enemy variety is great, even rivaling classic Doom I would argue. Second encounter especially is much better with enemies compared to first encounter, which just likes to throw kleer hordes at you every few minutes. There's also the creative and fun gimmicks, goofy secrets, blatantly obvious 1 hp traps and Sam's corny one liners that give the games a laid back and fun vibe. Even the serious difficulty had a lot of thought put into it. For one, the enemies are faster, more numerous and do more damage ( though their health remains the same ) but they also shake up the enemy hordes by throwing different enemies that weren't there on normal difficulty. And to compensate for all this, you can carry way more ammo than on normal for all the guns. And the tourist difficulty actually has regenerating health 😂, and people think halo came up with it. It feels like croteam just isn't interested in Serious Sam anymore and just want to move on to something "more sophisticated" but are stuck with the series because it's been their main money maker for more than a decade. Even Serious Sam 3 was apparently going to be a modern military shooter before the project got canned and the assets were reused for serious sam 3.

It did not got ruined because the Game got a very positive reception and while it has issues it's still an enjoyable game and it also got an amazing expansion.

I think not using the secondary fire while dual wielding is intentional, it gives you a reason to still use the weapon on it's own. The reason why the levels feel the way they do in the game is because Croteam scanned the environment the level takes place in and filled it with enemies. From what I have read it appears that this game went through some development hell. It's worth mentioning that this game doesn't technically reuse assets from Talos Principle, it's actually the other way around. The original version of Serious Sam 4 had a lot more puzzles, they decided that it didn't fit Sam and made Talos from it. I also wonder if the performance issues comes from the Serious Engine. It appears that they have abandoned Serious Engine and moved to Unreal for Talos 2. The main problem with the game is that it is unfocused. It has goofy enemy designs but realistic environments, linear progression but open levels and goofy humour but attempts at being serious. I will say that the soundtrack is fantastic.

Talos was released in 2014, SS4 in 2020, it doesn't matter which one they wanted to do first, one came after the other and there's a 6 year gap between those two.

LEGO games can render lots of enemies on screen. For example, in LEGO Star Wars 3 The Clone Wars, there are lots of droids fighting in The Hidden Enemy level and in the Geonosis Arena level.

Siberian Mayhem fixed graphics issues, but they never implemented those fixes for SS4, weird. Flickering trees can be fixed by using DirectX API instead of Vulkan, but that means you need an extremely powerful rig to play it properly.

Personally I liked the modern military elements they introduced into SS3. It aalso ended up like this, because supposedly it started as a Doom 4 prototype, back when then that game was still planned as a CoD clone. But that the levels are so simplistic with no puzzles and things to mix things does sound like a negative.

Croteam has always been a half baked developer anyway. I think they just don't know how to continue the SS story. Hence the constant prequels.

I think run backwards and shoot fps may be worse than fps with tiny little skittering/flying enemies all over the screen.

It's supposed to be played online so I hope you utilized that feature but I agree this game to me is A may zing but feels unfinished the survival mode feels barebones and there just wasn't a whole lot to keep me coming back like quake does with its mod support

i was so disappointed with Serious sam 3 and it was a rare game i dropped after 2-3 levels or so and some years later i finished it. it was such a downgrade in a lot of parts. then i had hopes for Serious Sam 4, the looks were much better and then i played it and yeah you nailed it in a lot of aspects. i still think it is definitely worth playing and the addon is really better. Serious Sam 4 is much better than 4 but it still lacks compared to the old games, even Serious Sam 2 is the better Serious Sam than 3 and 4. Croteam should maybe understand that Serious Sam doesnt need to be REVOLUTIONIZED or whatever marketing crap. it just needs to be a fun game with little twists and some nice expansions here and there.

Check out Serious Sam Next Encounter. The Console spin off that was my entry to the SS series and is actually very good.

Game developers are truly just one of a kind. They don't know what dafuq they even doing. Im not gonna talk about how bad this game played, in terms of level design. How bad the key or switch hunting was to progress through those asinine designed levels. I like big and open levels in my video games. But what they did here, i don't like. What im complaining about is gameplay design. Like dual wielding weapons, which is is good, when done right. But i hate to hammer two mouse or even worse, trigger buttons to fire left and right. Which leads us to a really big problem, also mentioned in the video. You can't use ALT Fire anymore! Which is utterly stupid from a fundamental game design POV! I don't even like to hammer a single button for pistol shots. Just let me hold down da button and shoot till the weapon is empty. And if they made you shoot both weapons with one single button/trigger at the same time, then you could also still ALT Fire your Grenade Launcher Attachments!! And why do i have to press Dual Wield every single time when i switch weapons? Its ffing annoying!! I don't get how all developers in this industry can be this inept!? And they all are! Also as a side note. This studio can make huge levels plus having a big amount of NPCs running about. Plus you have vehicles like tanks and "Mechs" apparently. So why in the unfrozen planes of hell are they not capitalizing on that? Why not make a game using that aspect? They could make another Battlefield, they could make an Arcady Operation Flashpoint etc. They could make a game about an open map dynamic battlefield (not the game Battlefield) where you and the enemy or enemy team have multiple bases and you have to take them over. And if you neglect your missions or what ever, the enemy is taking back their bases and getting more troops that way. You could even have a command mode to issue commands like in a strategy games. Battlezone did something like that. While you and your team are still in the mids of the action. All this is possible if you have a giant map where lots of stuff could happen. Did anyone bother with something like that? No.

First and Second Encounter have HD remasters - a bit higher-res textures and work wonderfully on modern systems. They explore this type of gameplay so thorought that the following entries are kind of redundant, even if they were amazing. 2 and 3 are not terrible but they are meh

Something definetely felt off with this whenever I watched gameplay of it. It seemed like great stuff was going on on the screen but I just had no reaction to it. The enviroments look fake as hell to me, I also don't have an issue with reusing asset's but it definetely doesn't look good to me here. The aesthetics of first and second encounter put this one to shame. The handgun could also be a more powerful - it being a Desert Eagle. Gotta love the tacticool AR in a game like this too... Skilltrees ?! Yeah, I think I'll pass. The only thing that kept this on my wishlist was that I had a decent time with the previous installments, but I can delete it now without any hesitation.

Bonus points: they got the caliber wrong on the Desert Eagles. For some baffling reason their in-game info entry says they're chambered in .45. Why they're canonically chambered in the same caliber as "muh two world wars" M1911s when the real life ones are chambered in the vastly more powerful .357 Mag, .44 Mag, or .50 AE is utterly beyond me.

Apparently you're missing the part where Croteam chose to put one of the most recognizable firearms in the world in their game, then proceeded to make it *less* cool than the real-life version.

@@DWTerminator And apparently you're missing the part where very few people actually care how close these weapons are to the ones they were based on, a vast majority just wants some satisfying guns to cause some destruction with. And you get more than enough of that in this game. I'm not saying there are no other flaws with the game, but "the guns not being the exact same as their real-life counterpart" is really a non-issue.

I finished the game just two weeks ago and agree with pretty much everything. It feels so lazy and half assed with its empty levels and the cutscenes + other characters are simply unbearable. The last third of the game really takes the cake: way too long, drawn out with endless walking/driving distances for no good reason... Quantity over quality on a whole new level. I regret forcing myself through til the end, what a waste of time and total chore. The final level (especially boss fight) left me speechless as how they seriously included this abysmal janky mess... makes Duke Nukem Forever seem like a masterpiece!

This is why i didn't buy this game how bad it looks and with popping flickering and bugs. Why i watched your video to see if its all been fix guess not so i still wont be buying a messy made game considering how well the first game hd remake plays so much better and the third game. This game forth games seems like it was rushed to make money shame as it could of been a fantastic looking game. Maybe they might go back to it and remaster it as it needs it if it wants me to go out and buy it.

I've never liked any of the Serious Sam games. I think they're all boring and bland. And I'm a huge retro-FPS fanatic.

To be fair... Serious Sam was never really "retro." It has a few things in common with them, sure, but it's definitely not a retro FPS series.

1. ss3 is best-selling SS game ever, so way is right 2. your gpu is dying or you set bad settings, nobody has problems with flickering shadows on vegetation (see other walkthroughs on youtube)

It makes sense that SS3 is the best selling game in the series. It came out long after the series had established itself and had the most marketing out of all of them to that point. Just because something sells well doesn't make it "the right way." My GPU is fine. Settings are maxed out at 1080p, like I do with pretty much everything unless I start running into severe performance issues. This is quite literally the only game I've messed with that has this problem, meaning it's some weird issue within SS4. Could've also been introduced with a patch since most videos on this game came out right around when it originally released.

@@DWTerminator that game felt like it had direction and identity, despite it being put together from 3 different games that never came to be and the encounters were well designed, while SS 4 is often enemy spam and everything spawning in before you can deal with the previous wave
