In this video, I tear into the so-called "masterpiece" that was ultimately such an inconsistent experience I couldn't even force myself to finish it, Elden Ring.

Fromsoft's games are my all time favs and while I did enjoy elden ring alot, you're not wrong! There was a lot about elden ring that was just overbearing and daunting to me after about 80 hrs I had to make myself finish it, I was so fatigued that I barely was barely able to, I prefer the traditional souls games design much more

I _did_ meet the mine version of Astel before the other one, and that ended up being a pattern for me, since I even would often stumble on trash mob versions of an enemy before meeting the recycled dramatized boss version. This means that the game was essentially serving me content in reverse, and while it can be argued that it was my fault for "sequence breaking", the counter argument is that the game is designed around doing that.

"If i ever create another Dark Souls game, it'll be at the end of my career". That sentence made me think the director wanted to create a new concept or at least improve seriously the gameplay loop now but here we go again. For many people it's fine to continue playing what they like (people still play Dark Souls over and over) but already from Dark Souls 3 i was tired of it. Will we have another 3-4 Elder Ring games now? I really hope they create some side stuff, smaller in scope with different paradigms in fighting style and so on. They should have the money to try that. Fewer equipment but that matters, new enemies archetypes, dungeons with less copy&paste (artistic vision can help to a degree). Bosses that aren't dodge challenges and little else.

Sad part is... FromSoft used to make a huge variety of games (from first-person dungeon crawlers like King's Field and Shadow Tower to weird JRPGs like EverGrace, mech action games like Armored Core or Metal Wolf Chaos, and even horror games like Echo Night), but over the past decade they've barely ventured outside of rehashing Demon's Souls.

@@DWTerminator makes sense business wise to continue doing one thing until people are interested in that series but i don't know if they don't change things too much because they fear fewer sales. Souls fans love seeing the same elements across the games (lore or else) but for me it is reaching meme (if not laziness) levels. i appreciate more when an idea is confined within few games, it makes for an unique experience. Even Id Software understood they had to move on with Quake after Doom 2. A different "feeling" within the same gameplay idea. There's not really that "jump" in From Software games nowadays, it's like an remix of the same elements, some are added, some slightly changed.

Good video. Agreed with some but not all. Personally I think the reused assets becomes a bit of a bummer due to just the sheer size of the world. 11 ulcerated tree spirits is just a bit much IMO. I can handle the other reused assets as most of them have a lore reason to explain why they’re there. At least it isn’t like Destiny 1 where Bungie sold you DLCs that literally were just the base game maps but ran backwards with maybe a variation to mob spawns. That’s the worst case of assets reuse I’ve ever witnessed. The input lag is absolutely terrible. 💯 agree with that. Most of my deaths are due to input fuckery from the batching system. Late game balancing is nonexistent. I don’t know whether to blame that on open world finally being funneled into a more linear state so they have to account for 1shot comet azure builds or if development crunch hit and that was the last thing worked on. It definitely is frustrating to the point of shut the game off and walk away screaming. And I love the game and I’m saying that. Elden ring was a good first attempt at the open world soulslike, ER2 will hopefully not be a repeat of DS2.

I played all FS games, Dark Souls 1 is still one of my favourite games ever, it brought me back to gaming, i was like 25 back then i tought im getting too old for gaming/was getting burned out. I can and still do go back and play DS1, DS3, Bloodborne, for so many years. I played through Elden Ring once, and i have no intention or willingness to play it again. Mediocre, bloated copy pasta. The only really amazing thing about this game is the world, but it only lasts for your first playthrough, everything else, from NPCs, to bosses, is mediocre and forgettable. Also - why bring George R.R. Martin to make this game? WTF, how is the story any different than any other souls game lol. 90%+ people who play it will miss it anyways, if they dont watch 1hr long lore videos on youtube or read the wiki. FromSoft basically did a Bethesda with Elden Ring when it comes to assets reuse, models, textures, animations. 100 bossess or something like that, only 8 are unique, rest is copy pasted over and over, no - thanks.

I agree, the game feels like a lot like Dark souls 2 and a lot of aspects, it feels cheap and unfair not the polish that we used to fromsoftware. Input delay and reading in a souls game is a sin. Not to mention the lack of quality bosses I think they're only a handful. Makes me appreciate Dark souls 3 a lot more.

I am so happy to see that there are some in the community who see through the veil! My goodness, I've been saying now since like two months ago that gamers get mad about other gaming companies reusing assets, or giving a reskin to enemies, but when fromsoft did it in sekiro and now elden ring they got a hard pass. The double standard and hypocrisy needs to stop forreal. I can foresee fromsoftwares future souls games becoming more and more stale for the veterans as time goes on. Because elden ring did so well they aren't going to change much unless elden ring 2 isn't as much a hit as the first.

@@DetectivePikachu37347 I just got back on dark souls 3 last night after starting ng+6 on elden ring. Immediately after doing a dodge roll I said to myself "yup, this game is much better than elden ring." The speed in combat is fair and the input is fair. There was no dramatic skill check in my eight playthroughs of ds3. It was a progressive uphill battle without significant changes. In elden ring as soon as you get to Maliketh the difficulty skyrockets. I mean that fight is so ridiculous without spirit ashes it boggles my mind why they implemented it. There are few who no hit Maliketh, kudos to them. But the majority hate him, and every boss after that minus radagon. Even Godfrey. Godfrey isn't so bad until phase 2. His combos are ridiculous. It just feels lime the game was designed in a way that it didn't prioritize solo play. Yes, you can get good at every boss but these bosses will require a steep time commitment a lot of us don't have!

This is a very fair review. I got to take my hat off to you for being able to do a video this spot on despite not getting much out of the game. I kinda wish this game didn't have the issues you talked about in this video. I wasn't able to finish this thing either, mostly because i couldn't be bothered with the filler by mid to late game either. Supposedly the very late game story bosses are said to be very good again. But much like you, i didn't enjoy the gameplay anymore after 122 hours in my case and i did play a dex build with dual Katana's i can tell you it wasn't very interesting of a playstyle either. Bloody slash was what the game told me worked the best, so even after looking into what else blood type ashes i could switch to i didn't find anything worth using instead of that. It feels like they just bloated the world with stuff in the last stretch of the dev time, but somehow never upgraded the arsenal the player could use per playstyle at least. I can imagine some hybrid builds like you can find videos for here on youtube working very well, sure, but this type of game should incentivize you to find these builds and combinations of mechanics working out on your own not going to a wiki and just copying what someone else tells you gets the job done!

I definitely get all your points and felt them while playing, too. But ultimately I actually did love the game and had a 130h playthrough, while most of my online friends were playing it too and that was quite an experience, uncovering the mysteries of the game together like this. Sometimes it frustrated me to an extent I normally cannot endure, but somehow I came back to it again and again. For me personally it was the beauty of the world, the secrets, the artdesign in every corner and the atmosphere that kept me going - and after playing it I really had a problem playing games with inferior combat, because it simply didn't feel good. I also think this game isn't a masterpiece, but it certainly is a unique and intriguing game, for me despite all the problems that come with it. At the end of the day it's really a question of how much shit you can take from From Software and I perfectly understand quitting this game after a while. However I really wish for a second title in this series, there's so much promising stuff here and if they take their time, use their unbelievable ressources they now have after the game skyrocketing sales and really improve on this base that they built here... There might be a masterpiece coming. As a sucker for Open-World-games this was so refreshing and I want more.

Thank you DW, you addressed every gripe I had with this game. I am baffled reviewers are giving this game 10s and 9s. It's by no means a bad game, but there are so many problems with it, and previous Souls games in my opinion have done it better. If this game gets Game of the Year, I am going to lose my mind... -The lag during combat -My game hard-crashed more times than any other FromSoftware games combined -I had to restart once because my save file got stuck in an endless loading loop. -Ardus Plateau region's ground didn't have collision, so I fell through the map whenever I explored there -Game hard-crashes whenever I enter phase 2 of the Fire Giant boss -Greatsword + Heavy Armor build (the "Ongabunga Warrior") doesn't work in late game; late game bosses are super quick and aggressive, and it takes a calendar year to swing the heavy weapon and recover from the animation. Bleed builds are pretty much the only way to go if you plan to solo the game, because bosses have so much health.

The same idiots call Skyrim and Failout 4 masterpieces and give them 10/10 scores/stars. Those are not reviewers, those are payed influencers to sell a product. You can like Skyrim and Failout 4. You can have hundred hours of fun. But that still doesn't make them good games. I had tons of fun with Mad Max. Just driving around and crashing other cars. But the game is as bare bones as it can get. There is barely any content in the game. And the game loop is basically sand, drive, infiltrate camps, fist fight, and collect pointless trash objects for your ego. Thats actually overall bad and lazy game design. Yet i 100%ted the game. Jack, I am on your side. While patiently awaiting elden ring I was no lifing nioh 2. Elden ring was marketed as a new IP, something other than dark souls so while we barely got news about from 2019 till 2021 I thought we were gonna get something totally different, like they did with sekiro. Personally I feel like it was unfair for Miyazaki to say just a couple months prior to launch that elden ring was a natural evolution of the souls formula. What the hell man, that's not the expectation that was set up from the trailer to that moment. As soon as I started elden ring I felt let down. I was like bruh, this is dark souls 4, it really is. I kept progressing and doing every cave, thinking they were gonna be like the chalice dungeons in bloodborne. Nope, those caves were Hella easy, I couldn't believe how easy they were. Another dissapointment. Then you have the world that's littered with runes and not as much significant loot. I would just from a rooftop to a hard to get to spot just to find a rune. I was like bro what the hell is this. The first time I fought morgot, that was dope. Then another time in leyndell, then another time after that I was like bro what the hell. Then you got all the other mini bosses that they re-used, to fill the world with. Got really really boring. What I don't like is that the community seems to be in heavy denial about this. But I don't think the majority of these people are veterans of the franchise. I think the new players are unaware of just how much lack of innovation really is here. Gamers complain when ubifost or any other big gaming company reuses assets, yet when fromsoft does it somehow their game is a masterpiece. I wish they wouldn't have made this game open world. 😪

FromSoftware Games could've easily made a good open-world dungeon crawler game had they not reused enemy assets from previous areas with an extra move, different ability, or more health points or both in different, fixing the attack buffer delays, create a perfect version of Morrowind's journal system, intuitive buttons, diversifying the loot for each player build for almost every place, adding an extra layer of gameplay for the horse-like creature, better in-game information as to why this world needs fixing from multiple perspectives instead of just one albeit in a vaguely prophetic manner, toning down the nihilistic parts by the NPCs, and so on. All of these stuff FromSoftware could've done and fixed would've helped them make Elden Ring into a 7/10 or 8/10 game in my book instead of getting yet another mediocre Dark Souls-like game.

Yeah, the reused content and bullshit like enemies hitting you through the walls (something that should have been fixed in the second game by FS) does sour the experience, but overall the game is great. And dude, wtf are you talking about resistances and defence? The game clearly shows you information about what resistances are, like, increased bleed resistance gives you a bigger bar so you won't get affected by blood loss that quick. The game does explain these stats. Heavier armor clearly reduces damage, where did you get that it doesn't? It seems to not give that much because enemies in later areas are stupidly strong (overtuned more like). About the dragons (wyverns more like), what did you wanted exactly? 20 fucking dragons with different visuals and attacks? The game has a fuckton of enemies, unique enemies already. So i don't think FS is being lazy in this point. Also, you said that your build wasn't good enough for the game, my first time playing ER was like in all the other Souls games: medium to heavy armor, Claymore and a good shield, even a greatshield. I was able to deal with the enemies fine with some hard moments here and there, for example, i killed the two gargoyles on my first time. About reusing bosses. Margit or Morgott uses a projection of himself the first time you encounter him and in the second time too (in the open world close to the royal city). The ghost of Godfrey i see as a remembrance created by the Erdtree to protect it. I do understand that this can be seen as lazy but you need to see/take in account the story/lore in this part. For example, i find it very lazy and bad to have TWO Astels, like you said, TWO Moghs and the Godskin dudes. Some bosses and certain parts of the game are clearly designed to be done with a ash spirit (summon), and that is kinda "meh" imo. And yeah, i agree with the bad side quest design, like, the lack of information gives by the NPCs, that doesn't work well in an open-world game. The dark fantasy setting doesn't work well for open-world imo. I agree that the game should have given you some type of journal system, because in the game you have recipe books, so of course our character can read and write. The fact that some enemies don't abide by the game's rules, the fact that your character should have been faster and that would have worked way better for the combat because of certain enemies and bosses.

However you’ve been running into technical issue more and more frequently in these reviews/thoughts/infuriate videos. An it’s because your hardware is woefully outdated at this point. A 4790k is getting beaten by current i3s now adays, an 80 dollar cpu. It’s literally 8 years old and only 4 cores. You don’t even have access to ddr4 ram, which is on its way out. Games stopped being developed for 4 cores a whole generation ago. An as for 16 gigs of ram, it’s woefully little for gaming nowadays. The days of 16gigs being Enough ended a 2-3 years ago. An that was at 16gigs of ddr4. We have games like the division 2, which at this point is 3 years old taking advantage of 16 cores. You’d be better off playing games on a modern console then your current machine. I’m not saying this to be a dick, especially with inflation not everyone can finically afford to do an upgrade. However I don’t think it’s fair to in all these videos keep mentioning performance issues on a machine that can barely keep up with modern i3s/ ryzen 3. The new high end cpus expected to launch this year are in the 24 core range.

FromSoft is notorious for delivering technically underdevloped Shovelware. Their ports are simply trash. And Modders had to fix what the inept developer couldn't or is not willing to do. Its simply BS anti consumer behavior. And that is why i don't give them money. They don't deserve it! All Souls like FromSoft games suffer the same issues. Probably because the same incompetent assheads keep dishing out the same game in different colors all the time. The gameplay in all their games is bad by design, sluggish at best. That is a fact. The strawman combat system is as barebones as it can get. The animations are wonky and just feel wrong. If any Sword Fighter in history would swing any sword like you do in the Souls games, none of them would have survived even a single battle. And unlike in Severance Blade of Darkness, blocking is either very subpar or completely useless, later in the game. Also, you don't really fight enemies, you roll over the floor like an idiot. Waiting for a very short time frame where the enemy stops attacking, and your genius stamina bar has refilled enough, so you can strike two, maybe three times. Then you have to wait and roll again. That is not fighting, that is waiting! (In Blade of Darkness, you fight, you trade blows, you actively Block until your shield shatters!) On small enemies you can use Reposte, but that doesn't work on bigger critters. Reposte is also what should completely recplace backstabbing during combat! And there is so much wrong with the BackStabbing mechanic by design and its implementation, everyone who says that was a good idea should be punched in the face at least three times a day. Backstabbing can work, but definitely not the way this trash company designed it, namely as a cheap abuse system. Tell me what you do, do you do battle? Or do you cheese/backtab your way to victory!? Backstab should only be allowed when unnoticed by enemies. And NEVER in the middle of a fight. Unless you crack some kind of pseudo Dexterity RPG number, that unlocks an ultra skill for being the most agile shadow ninja in da hood or something. Then there is the Art Style, and thats the only point where they deserve credit, in all their Souls games. But the Level Design on the other hand most of the time, is just abysmal! From stairs and bridges that lead to nothing or simply pit falls, to none of it has any kind of railing to prevent the people who live there to fall off etc. So many areas don't even make sense. Not even for Fantasy worlds! Thats bad. Holes in the ground coverd by textures for the player unable to see. Thats cheap and BS level design. To cliffs that look like you'll die when jumping down. But you have to jump down. But still take damage in the process. BS game design. Or walking down stairs, just for the camera being locked into a position where you cannot see the hole in the stairs, because your character blocks your view. $hit like that is what the cucks at FromSoft do on purpose. They probably get a hard on by designing that. General navigation in FromGames are a hassle to say the least. The gamebalance is also all over the damn place, pointless armors, bullet sponges galore etc. etc.. And they give you pseudo missile weapons like bows and crossbows. But none of these are actually viable as a character build. They are only there to "kite" enemies out of groups. What kind of arsehole gamedesigner you have to be, to not only come up with $hit like that, but also do this in all the games your trash company produces? Enough of this. If anyone wants to play the only good Souls Game available. Then you only have one choice, and that is Demon's Souls! The Remake is even better. The game is hard, but it is fair. Its the best there is.

It's pretty clear most folks never tried an ARPG let alone action game like Byonetta or DMC and somehow fooled themselves into thinking Souls has a deep combat system. Not gonna lie I was at that point in the past too. But there are many, many options out there these days people could try and come to the same realization I did, just most never do. And now with Elden Ring Fromsoft went full on "mainstream" so there is hardly a question the formula will get dubed down further. Until one day all the casuals find a new hot thing to jump on and fawn over and this shitty cycle begins anew.

I think Elden Ring is everything good and bad about From's "Souls" games, multiplied by 10. As a fan, I like most of it, but its problems also became more annoying and hard to ignore, and I hope they listen to the actual critical feedback they've been getting. The game has a severe drop in quality after you go down the elevator at the end of Leyndell (Godefroy is lame, but I still enjoyed the Margitt/Morgott rematches). The Mountaintops/Snowfield areas are just awful, and I think removing them from the game,and replacing them with nothing, would have just improved things overall. The Haligtree was enjoyable as a "hard secret optional dungeon" and the final mandatory dungeon is maybe my favourite in the series, but the bosses of both of them are horrible frustrating messes that seem to have been designed to be fought with Sekiro's controls (which ER doesn't have, obviously). Before Leyndell there were still some notable issues, like the reused dragons, and those "Boss Fights" that consisted of 2 mini-bosses that were not designed to be fought together, so their attacks overlapped and never gave you a window to fight back, but my main issue is that despite the world being non-linear, if you want a consistent difficulty curve, you have to tackle the areas in a specific linear order. I really wish there was an optional way to buff weaker enemies up to your level (similar to DS2 and Sekiro's dificulty options), so I could make an Inquisitor, head for Volcano Manor to get Inquisitor-themed gear, and then be able to head back and have a fun fight with the bosses in Limgrave and their intricate movesets, instead of having them attack me once and explode from the vibrations of their swords hitting my armor. The first time playing, I cleared Caelid before Liurnia, and going back I had to shelve my main weapon and deliberately abstain from "over-upgrading" my other gear so the enemies had a chance. (PS: The second Astel made me sad.)

If you think Nioh is more tightly designed than Elden Ring you've no idea about what a good Souls like is. Nioh is a 80 hours linear game where you face the same reskinned enemies and bosses at nauseum. Gameplay is super clunky, bosses have 1 million hp and there are only 4 weapon classes with the same movesets but different stats. I dropped the game way before the end because of how repetitive and clunky the game was (Sekiro's gameplay is way better). Nioh is one of the only RPGs that bored me after the first level. If anything, Nioh is everything wrong with those kinds of games. I heard Nioh 2 was better but I never played it.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 2 жыл бұрын
Nioh doesn't throw you up against anything that isn't designed within the boundaries of its combat system, isn't packed to the gills with filler content that recycles story-type bosses as generic side content, has a journal system so you can keep track of important NPCs/enemies you've fought/the story so far, and has every level specifically designed like a shorter version of FromSoft "legacy dungeons" (albeit certainly not as well-designed as FromSoft can do). So yes, it's definitely more tightly designed than Elden Ring is. Bonus points for it not having severe performance issues or input lag and just straight-up having a faster, more responsive, and generally better combat system. Sekiro's practically in a separate genre (hack n' slash action-adventure vs the hack n' slash RPG/dungeon crawler that Nioh/Elden Ring fall into) so comparing it to Nioh has to be taken with a grain of salt.
