Part of learning this game was learning when to time your jumps to the animations. If he's in the middle of a run animation, there's only certain times he'll be able to jump. It was one of the few graphical games we had back in the early 90s at my school, and getting good at it was something other kids looked at in awe. Those early Mac's were monochrome, so seeing it in colour on DOS was amazing to me. Rotoscoping his brother doing all the moves and turning those into animations really paid off at the time to make what appeared to be fairly smooth animations for back when this came out.

I played this on my 8088 XT PC back in the day (which was also the last time i played it) I can't really fault the game for what it was, like you said it's a product of its time, I guess I always got used to weird or laggy control schemes and enjoyed the games for what they were, but I have no idea if I would have the patience to play it nowadays (the older I get the less patience -_-), but I still consider this a classic. I always felt that Another World was a lot worse due the low framerate problems, Flashback did it a lot better, but still laggy. "cinematic" just means it has an overflow of animations to cycle through between each command, which results in noticeable lag, bit of a drawback and a true western idea of always wanting to make games more like movies or cartoons >

Disconcertingly there is a cinematic platformer on the Action 52 cartridge, of all places. It's called Billy Bob.

tbh I cannot imagine this game with any other controls, it would lose its magic. If u are good, know the level, controls work just fine, the problem is like accidental click and u run towards trap or soemthing instead of walking for example - but its player's fault, not the game's. Can u really imagine playing this game with crystal clear, snappy controls like super meat boy or something? I think it would be simply bad tbh. Dunno, maybe nostalgia is kicking in, but yeah, prince 1 is for me 1 of the best platformers to this day.

Yeah it feels clunky now but it's a very influential game You forgot to mention original Oddworld from cinematic platformers which got a remake recently You could also consider Limbo and Inside cinematic platformers even though they are much easier

This game has a soft spot in my heart since it's one of the first games I've ever played (back when I was 3-4 almost 25 years ago) and has always been the most significant first game I ever played. I never beat it to this day since it is a very difficult game indeed, but most old school games are infuriatingly difficult. That's what makes them fun and addicting, to a point haha.

6:33 You can in fact climb down. In more ways than one even. Doing a running jump works all the time. It requires holding UP + LEFT/RIGHT arrows to do it. Controls in this game are simple as they can get, and allow pixel perfect movement.

It's just what you're used to. In the 90s and earlier we were used to different types of games, different difficulties, different controls and different standards. It was fine and exciting back then. To go back you often need some patience and a good feeling of nostalgia. Give it some time and it will work for you.

This is the first game I ever played at 4 years old, I couldn't really get a grip of the controls at all and never attempted it again. I thought back then all videogames must be really difficult so I stayed away from them until being introduced to super mario and stuff by the neighbor's kids.

The Brahm Stoker's Dracula games did something similar but had items to collect to make the stages easier if you found them. Flashback was alright. Props for this being ahead of it's time but I also don't love it to pieces.

I love this game and most of its kind, but I don't really like the appellation 'cinematic platformer'. It's another one that I think comes from Yahtzee, and it's better than 'character action' which is utterly meaningless. I don't really think the controls are bad, they're just much more based on momentum and realism than other platformers.
@DWTerminator
@DWTerminator 6 ай бұрын
Plenty of other games have momentum being part of the movement and don't feel like the controls are arbitrarily deciding when they want to respond to your inputs. "Cinematic platformer" is a dumb term, sure, but for the purpose of discussing a tiny subtype of platformers with this specific gameplay style, it works well enough. Certainly nowhere near as useless and idiotic as "immersive sim" or "character action," at least.

Like I said, it was a rather short-lived genre that didn't really survive past the 90s. It's pretty easy to see why when even a game like the original Prince of Persia released 4 years after Super Mario Bros.

@@DWTerminator the main issue is that your character needs time to do the animation, he doesn't jump right off the bat like Mario, once you've realized that it should be replicatable every time you wanna do it, atleast with a bit of practice.

@@DWTerminator I have played and beaten this game at the beginning of 90s and I have no such problem like u did in this material (pressing button and it not working). So either I was very very very lucky to avoid all those bugged spots, or there are differences/different bugs between versions of this game (I played on DOS) (I assume u are 100% certain ur controler is working fine)

Running jumps work on the run cycle animation. You run, and then on the grid square before you want to jump you hold down the jump button. No need to button mash the jump button. Just hold it down in the cycle before you want to jump. It works pretty much exactly the same as the Tomb Raider 1 jump controls. That way it makes it a very precise platformer. You know without having to try if you can or can't make a gap by jumping.
