It’s because dispite himself he’s starting to like Bill. He even says “funny thing about being taken under the wing of a dragon… it’s warmer then you might think.” He’s losing sight of his goal. Seeing bill as a father. And indeed. Bill respects and honors his father. Says they lived by the same code it was only faith thag divided them. As you follow Amsterdam/Vallon's journey of vengeance, his plans, and how - in his quest to get close to the Butcher he begins to grow fond of him, that line: "....It's a funny feeling being taken under the wing of a dragon - it's warmer than you'd think," goes so hard. Gives ya goosebumps. Such a well written/acted film, truly.

Love that primal scream, revealing the agony & rage of Bill The Butcher! DDL not only captured the various nuances & complexities along with the overall essence of that mid 19th Century NYC icon he became that notorious, fearsome & legendary gang leader from 1840s-mid 1860s Five Points. Truly amazing & captivating, indelibly so! And one of the finest, fiercest & most searing performances ever given, this layered, chilling, frightening yet entertaining tour de force (hilarious at times, yet always scary, as you can sense quite palpably the menace simmering just below the surface before bubbling up & oozing out with a ferocious intensity)! DDL nailed that role marvelously, seamlessly & in a very animated, powerfully compelling fashion, as he virtually brought Bill The Butcher back to life, quirks & all! One of the top five greatest cinematic depictions rendered since at least the 1970s, as DDL's acting genius, his near superhuman dedication, was on incredible display in this movie, as he was running on 8 cylinders, deeply immersed in his character portrayal, inspired even (to a mesmerizing depth & degree!). This force of pure, passionate nature!

It's an interesting scene: the supposed assassin strides forward, the handgun in his right hand. Bill sits to Amsterdam's right, to the left of him from the assassin's perspective. He is oblivious to what approaches, but Amsterdam notices, and leaps to intercept. He hits the assassin's right arm, pushing the gun to the right - or to the assassin's left - as it fires. The bullet hits Bill in his left upper chest/shoulder area. A non-lethal wound. But if it wasn't for Amsterdam's interference, the bullet might not have touched Bill at all. By hitting the assassin's right arm pushing it to the left, he brought the aim of the gun to the left, and putting Bill's torso into harm's way. But it only hit the LEFT of Bill's torso - had Amsterdam been able to issue a harder blow to the assassin's right arm, he might have assisted the man in shooting Bill in his heart......

I feel like a lot of poeple are missing out on the subtlety of this "Whose man are you?!" - that question must be echoing in Amsterdam's, di Caprio's character's, head this whole time. He just prevented assassination of the guy who killed his father (but who at the same time became a new fatherly figure for him and took him under his wing), and is in a insane maze of loyalty, obligation and vengeance.

Little known fact: Daniel Day-Lewis was so captivated by the performance made by the actor playing Lincoln in this scene that he camped outside Steven Spielberg's house for 3 months, fully dressed as the 16th President of the United States of America and leaving his tent only to help himself to the director's dinner, until he convinced Steven to cast him in his upcoming masterpiece: Lincoln.

He's definitely not his friend he's just using him. I think his only "friend" at this point was Leonardo's character. He gained his respect from the start and showed loyalty time and time again eventually even saving his life. This why he turns around in front of everyone and makes the gesture with his hat to Leonardo. He truly believed he was like a son by then even though he was Irish. It didn't matter to him he loved the boy because of his spirit and character. He had the ultimate respect and admiration for him by then. Nobody else could even come close. Which is why when Leonardo's character gets caught he mentions taking him under his wing. I like to believe he was grooming him for leadership after he was gone. Such a great movie

I'm pretty sure DDL has done a movie from every American time period. There Will Be Blood, this, Lincoln, Mohicans, and Crucible to name a few

Funny thing, Daniel Day Lewis later played President Lincoln. I take that back. He didn't play Lincoln. He BECAME Lincoln.

I first saw Daniel Day Lewis in Animal House as "D-Day." I thought he'd always remain a comic actor. I was wrong.

@@halfdollar86 Did you know that DDL was already retired before making this movie and Scorsese had to send Di Capreo to meet him and convince him to accept the role. I heard it from leo during an interview after the release of the movie.

He's usually very choosy over what characters he wants to play, given the year gaps in between his projects in his filmography. But it DOES take a little persuasion to get DDL to play roles he turns down at first. He also turned down Abraham Lincoln which was another role DiCaprio convinced him to play and even won his third Best Actor Oscar. What are the odds?

Lettuce leaves were a bad choice as stuff to throw at the stage. It just kept flapping in the air and landing on the audience members 3 or 4 feet from where it was thrown. .
