As waves of immigrants swell the population of New York, lawlessness and corruption thrive in lower Manhattan’s Five Points section. After years of incarceration, young Irish immigrant Amsterdam Vallon returns seeking revenge against the rival gang leader who killed his father. Martin Scorsese's original choice for Jenny was Sarah Polley. The studio forced him to pick someone more well-known. It feels unfair to Cameron Diaz, because she's not bad, but good lord do i wish we'd gotten to see Polley in the role instead.

@@flatplant there is zero truth to that. The vast majority of people coming into New York from Ireland in the mid 19th century would have been Irish speakers. Some from the west of Ireland didn't even speak English at all.

The boy can do the most convincing Rhodesian/South African Afrikaans accent ever. Think about it, his character was taught to speak initially by his dad Priest Vallon who was off the boat Irish but when he died he went to live in a boys home so his accent would slowly morph from pure Irish to American and now it's combination of both. Haven't you halfwits ever met someone from another country but they've lived in a different country for ages and they sound like they have both accents, it's bizarre. But there will always be halfwits that just think Leo's "failed" to do an Irish accent lmfao.which is stupid because then the studios would never let it fly. A world renown director like Scorsese knows more than you, I doubt he didn't notice or didn't care.

I am Irish and I don't understand half the stuff they were on about here, stargazer never heard anyone use that before, the wee man in the man in the middle of the square should of had all the main roles. Here are a few phrases you here on a daily, people call each other mate, love, son. no one used arse either. God just cause ya don't know about the accent, doesn't mean you should make up words. I hope this has been informative.

You do understand it’s New York City not Dublin . The character has been living in nyc for his entire life . He clearly isn’t Irish . You hear Latino people’s accent change as they live longer here .

Supposed to be early Irish American accents, they even go into this point about Leo's characters accent in the film as being different from new comers from Ireland
