Mike, My father has an older home with a very heavy wooden door. Recently his garage door opener's plastic gear wore out. My father was a medic in the Korean war and recently is suffering from arthritis due to his war injuries so he couldn't open the door manually. While waiting for the door opener to be fixed I followed your excellent video and adjusted the springs so that now even he can open the door manually with a couple of fingers. This will insure that the opener will last much longer once repaired. Thanks Mike!

Great video Mike...not many on the internet for a "tilt-up" vs. "sectional" these days.
@ALLProGarageDoors2 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not that is super easy, let's see if i can explain this... your right i could do a video on this exact subject. First you open the door, when the door is open you can easily remove the three lags attached to the door and move the arm by tapping it with a hammer, if you want the door to sit higher off the floor tap the arm towards the street slightly then run two of the lags back in and test it, if it's good run the third lag if not remove the two lags and tap again. When you tap the long plate it should slide but the door should not. If you want to even the gap it's basically the same process... go to the side with the bigger gap and remove the three lags attaching it to the door then tap the plate towards the opening slightly so that the arm will now want to pull the door toward the jamb, put two lags back and test, if not good enough do the same thing to the tight side, tap the plate toward the tight side jamb so that it wants to push the door toward the other side, run two lags and test. All of this is done with the door up... or should i say open. no heavy lifting easy peasy with a few taps.

Thanks for the great pointers. Now I know why the original opener died and the new one was none too happy. I found the door was 2 holes out of balance and one of the lower mounts was 2 inches higher than the other. Identified the correct location, filled an old, nearby hole, and all seems well now. I'm sure the next problem will be the kids leaving the door open now. I'd probably be better off without most of the stuff in the garage anyways :-)

@ALLProGarageDoors7 жыл бұрын
Dorothy Owens make sure you have the right length springs, for a double car 7ft high door you should have 4- 728 springs and start with a 1-1/2 to 2 inch stretch and it should stay up by itself.
@dorothyowens65627 жыл бұрын
My dad had new hinges in the garage. He had already replaced one side but never completed the job. The ones he left there are 730. Standard double car garage. There was about a 2" stretch.

Hi, great video, very helpful! I've got a couple questions, much appreciated if yourself or anyone can help me out with them: 1) How much overhead clearance do i need above the 7' height of my door to allow the door to open without clashing with the ceiling? 2) If my door jamb isn't sturdy, but i have a post (triple stud) just behind the jamb, can i mount the system to that? i.e. how far 'in' from the edge of the door opening/jamb can the system be mounted? Thanks, Dan

Mike, thanks so much. I learned a lot from your great videos. From the Holmes brochure I see they recommend 2 x 728 springs per side for 150-300 pound doors and 2 x 528 per side for 200-350 pounds. I notice that you are mixing one 528 and one 728 per side. Is there an advantage of doing that versus sticking with the same model springs in tandem?
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
+jjojunk The only advantage is that you can balance the door (since one spring is bigger) without stretching the springs so far, and by not stretching them as far...they last much longer!.

Interesting video thanks. My garage door (in New Zealand) doesn't seem to have that level of adjustment - only a single spring, and no nifty 'kicker' to alter the spring stretch near closed. But! I've been able to use your advice to adjust the springs, to stop the door jamming partly open, improve the balance, and (I think) give the garage door opener a bit of an easier time. Cheers.
@ALLProGarageDoors2 жыл бұрын
That's great! I didn't know New Zealand had 1 pc doors! 🤷🏼♂️ you might be able to buy kicker plates online if in the future you thought they might improve things.
@JakobusVdL2 жыл бұрын
Cheers@@ALLProGarageDoors, yeah they were all you could get until about 20 years ago. These days most of the door that go in are sectional, but there are plenty of the once piece tilting doors around. I'll have to pay more attention to see if kickers are a thing on some of them, but I think not.
@ALLProGarageDoors2 жыл бұрын
@@JakobusVdL The cheaper light duty hardware didn't have the good kicker plates. New Zealand sounds very similar door wise to here. 20 yrs ago 1pc doors were the most common now they are getting rare... mostly sectional doors here now.

I want to thank you for this video. One of my garage door springs broke/snapped on a Saturday. I called a garage door repair service. I was asked if I considered this as an emergency? Or was it something that could wait and be scheduled between Monday thru Friday? I asked, what is the difference between the two? He said, if I wanted it done today that it would cost $100 extra to the normal service charge. I guess Saturday at 7 in morning is emergency! I then asked, what is the normal charge? The normal service charge was $325 plus the $100 for a total of $425. I told him that I would have to call him back. I went on KZfaq and found your video. I went to 3 home improvement stores and nobody had the springs that I needed or had very limited springs in stock. When I say very limited I mean they only had 2 or 3 springs in stock. I then googled for garage door springs. Some places wanted $100 a spring. One place wanted $200 a spring. I was able to purchased two identical springs from Affordable Openers online. Which cost me less than $130 which included sales tax and a 2 day priority mail shipping. I just want to say that Affordable Openers are the BEST and you are too!!!!

Well Jesse, i’m glad that people like you and me know our way around youtube. I do the same thing when i fix something at home. Thanks for watching and glad you got the door up and running again for a fraction of the cost… it pays to have options.
@jpst3138 жыл бұрын
Wow! Nice video. My garage door springs busted on one side yesterday. I took them out and went and got the exact replacements for them. Everything I fix on this house was Micky Moused by the previous owner. On the side of the door that broke there were 2 P732c springs and on the side that did not break there is 1 sl732c and 1 p732c. I decided to get 4 sl732c springs and replace them all. So today when I went to replace them I realized that with the door completely open, the springs are completely loose. This may explain why the carriage assembly on my garage door opener is breaking. All the load is on the carriage assembly when the door is completely in the open position. After seeing how loose the springs were I started looking at videos and came across this. Here is my situation. #1 The 32's are way too long and I don't have any chain links left to go into the direction I need to get more distance between the end of the spring and the hinge (not sure what its called.) In addition My anchor is pretty much as low as it can go. #2 Now I am unsure what spring to use because I have no idea what my doors weighs and the previous owner obviously cannot be trusted. #3 After watching your video I realize I am missing the adjustment bolts that adjust the lower operation of the door. Maybe you can give me some advice. It looks like I may need to go with 28 inch springs. Do they make them any smaller than that? Also is there a way to estimate how much my door weighs. I went out and measured it. It is a 16 by 7 door with nine 7 foot 2 by 4's, two 16 foot 2 by 4's, and some hardware.The panel looks like it might be plywood and its (measured) thickness is 5/16 inch. With your experience I thought maybe you could give me an idea of how much it weighs and recommend a spring.
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
+jpst313 Very tough to estimate the weight of a garage door but yours sounds like a normal door which would take 4 either P or SL 728 springs, the 732 springs are for an 8ft high door, come back up some links on the chain until you have about a 1.5 to 2 inch initial stretch then it should balance, if not then go with a shorter or longer stretch depending on how springy or heavy the door still is.
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Also check this link for some more discussion on door weights and springs....I haven't watched it all the way thru but I filmed it for Holmes Halley and remember discussing door weights, it might help. www.homedepot.com/p/28-in-Plug-End-Garage-Door-Spring-P728-C/205510970

I went online and used an estimate chart for weight on 2 by 4's and quarter inch plywood. I came up with an estimated weight of 250 pounds on the door. After looking at the chart for the springs I decided to go with exactly what you did in this video. 1 p528 and 1 p728 on each side with the 528 closer to the door. This gave me a spring load range of 175 to 325 pounds. After installing them with a little more than 2 inches of clearance I found the door was very springy and changed the pivot point one hole closer. This adjustment worked out perfectly. I had a little slam on the lower end but as I said, I am missing those adjustment bolts. With the door opener it was really not too bad. It was almost an identical adjustment to this video. I ended up changing the setting on the force of the up and down settings on the opener from 4 and half to 1 and a half. There is a considerable amount of difference in the amount of force my garage door opener uses to open and close the door now. I would imagine this will make a huge difference on the amount of force that has been on my carriage assembly. Thanks, this video was super helpful.
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
....and by going up one spring size on two of the four and adjusting the bolt up on the kicker plate your springs should last alot longer than really stretching out 4-728's but down the road should you have to add a few gallons of paint which will add weight to the door you will still have plenty of spring adjustments left for the added weight if need be!! Glad it worked out for you!!
@hogfeederyahoo2 жыл бұрын
I have a question on spring length. I commonly see 28",30" and 32" I know the wire thickness 5,7,9 determines strength and how much weight the springs will lift. How do you pick the correct length of spring? My scenario - a rental property with 6 doors, All doors are original and I'm finding 4 spring lengths. My guess is the repair people use what they have and make it work... How to you pick the correct length? Any advantage to a longer or shorter spring? thanks
@mrodighiero59 жыл бұрын
Great video and instruction! However, could you explain how to adjust the other two adjustments? I mean the location of the pivot bolt located on the big plate that is bolted to the wall, and the length of the long skinny arm that goes to that same pivot? Thanks!
@allprogaragedoors93119 жыл бұрын
Well Marty the three holes near the bottom of the main plate will dictate how low your door will arc, so if you only had about three inches above the door to the ceiling then you would use one of the other two holes and the door would pull back quicker without going up that much but those settings are real hard on an opener and real jerky. So the factory setting is best when you have plenty of overhead clearance. the slider bolts on that same arm pull the door more vertical, so lets say your door came down all the way and was touching the header at the top but the bottom of the door was still sticking out a bit, then you would slide some shims under the door (so it doesn't drop onto the floor) and loosen those sliders and pull the bottom of the door in towards the back of the garage...then tighten the bolts and repeat on the other side. Then your door would be more straight up and down.

Thank you so much for the very useful video !! My 1-piece door is on Holmes model 1100 hardware which looks to be a lighter or cheaper hardware (??) than the E900 but I haven't found any manual or parts list for the model 1100. When the door is fully open I can grab the bottom edge and can easily move it from side to side, which is alarming, but I an guessing it may be due to the thinner gauge metal on the 1100 hardware (???). I have a feeling that I could "upgrade" to the E900 hardware and all arms/hinges/levers/ ... would attach to the same places on the jam and on the door. 1. When closing the 1-piece wooden door by hand it was always heavy starting at eye level and all the way down. I followed your advice and moved the kicker plate "shoulder" bolt from the center hole to the next "lower" hole and now the door is perfectly balanced at waist high, which I hope will help reduce the strain on the GDO motor. 2. Now the door is a little "springy" on the top 1/3 or 1/4, so I am thinking this could be improved by reducing the amount of spring pre-stretch via the Holmes LJ-1P adjustment hardware on the lower jam. Does that sound right to you? 3. Also, the door is still a little heavy "from the knees down" and I was going to reposition the bolt on the kicker plate "groove" as shown on your video but I realized that there were no bolts there. From your video it looks like the groove bolt is not a "shoulder" bolt like all the others but rather a regular bolt/nut set with a "spacer" in the gap, is this right? 4. The door is about 150 lbs and it uses a "single P528C" spring on each side. Do you think changing to "two" smaller springs (P928's or P728's) on each side will help the balance? Again, thanks in advance for any advice.
@ALLProGarageDoors Жыл бұрын
Answer to #2 and #3 is yes and you can use 2-728s on each side to balance a double wide door but a 528 on each side will balance as well, i’d wait till the 5s break then switch to 7s if you want.

Yes the Holmes 1100 hinge is very light duty but the E-900 doesn’t necessarily stop the side to side movement if the door is extremely heavy but will be better than 1100 for sure but E-900 does not go in the same holes… the measurements will be completely different.

@@ALLProGarageDoors Thanks for the quick responses !! A couple of updates: 1. To adjust door balance from the knee down I added a bolt/spacer/nut set to the kicker plate and with this bolt at the bottom of the slot the door closes gently at the bottom, just like at the end of your video, so I don't dare going any higher on the slot. 2. For adjusting the door balance from the top to waist high, after moving the shoulder bolt "one hole down" I had to reduce the spring pre-stretch from the original 1 3/4" to just 1/2" to reduce most of the remaining springiness. The door is still a little bit springy from the top to about waist height so I feel I could completely remove the spring pre-stretch. I have a non-working GDO installed so the outer trolley engages the inner trolley and keeps the door from falling down during manual operation, but I am wondering if there any DISADVANTAGE to having ZERO pre-stretch on the springs?
@ALLProGarageDoors Жыл бұрын
The disadvantage is that if the door was open and it rained the door could soak up some water weight and slam down. I would keep the 1/2 inch stretch on it….”slightly springy” isn’t too bad.

Thank you for the great video. I now have the confidence to tackle my door problem. My problem is that my very old door is not flat when it's open. It sags down on one side. What adjustment should I make to fix this problem? I am not familiar with the names of the various parts. Is there a way you could add to your video and explain the names?
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
Leo M. Mara I would think if your door sags on only one side the easiest way to fix that would be to go down one link on the chain and stretch the springs on that side a bit more. I will definitely do a video on the technical name for the parts of the hardware. Give a day or two.

There is hardly ANYTHING out there for these types of hinges. Thank you! Great video and really breaking it down on explaining what everything does. I haven't checked yet but could you do a video or anything on how to center a garage door in the jam that is already on the hinges? On my garage door I noticed on of the hinges is not straight it looks like it was not tightened right so it's pulled one of the hinge bracket that bolts to the jam in towards the garage door tilts like / . They were replaced like 15 maybe 20 yrs ago because I think either the hinge or spring broke on the originals that came with the house in 1965. The hardware still seems good no noticeable metal on metal grinding I try and keep them clean and I do grease them regularly.
@ALLProGarageDoors Жыл бұрын
That’s good idea for a video, i’ll do that. In the meantime i’d say open the door and put a 2x4x8 under it for safety then slightly loosen the bolt on the plate so you can tap it straight up and down with a hammer then tighten the bolts back down, maybe add a third bolt if needed to keep it from going back to crooked.

@@ALLProGarageDoors thank you for helping out, I'm sure I'm not the only 1 who has tried to search for information on how to properly install and Maintenance the old style 1 piece wooden garage door and 1 piece hinges if they're lucky enough hopefully they will find your channel. After this video I watches ur 1 on maintaining the opener, greasing the nylon gears and bushings, and I greases the chain up, Man! I don't think it ever sounded this good and quiet. But besides how well the opener performs now, I noticed when raised the right side of door rubs on the jam to where the I paint has rubbed off n u see just wood. Also the hinge that was pulled in towards the jam is not even the same height as the other hinged. Does placement matter meaning if 1 hinge is at 4 ft (jus throwing random # out there)should the other be the same? It seems like nothing was either measured or everything got Thrown off from that hinge being pulled in towards the jam on the left side? And should what should I start with for fixing this?
@ALLProGarageDoors Жыл бұрын
@@danielramirez5366 It is pretty critical that the hinges be at the same height, check and see how far off yours are, if it’s a quarter inch then it’s not worth moving it. To address the door rubbing the jamb you have to make the long arm on the opposite side pull the door toward the non rubbing side by moving it 1/4 closer to the center of the door.

Been thinking of putting a one piece door on a secondary detatched garage on my future property with this type lifting gear using a custom made wood door(the garage attatched to the house will have a recessed panel wood sectional door which will be a 16' x 7' 4 section long panel with windows on the 3rd section, going for a mid century retro theme). What lifting gear is that? Holmes E900? I live in Minnesota BTW.
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
+SUV Man Holmes E-900 is very suitable for double and single car garage doors up to 7ft 4" high, I happened to be using an off brand on this video but I would prefer the Holmes E-900.

Excelent video. What size or weight of spring your use for front and rear? How do you know which to pick? Thank you
@ALLProGarageDoors6 ай бұрын
most doors can be balanced with two 728s on each side. It takes a pretty hefty door to move up to a 728 and a 528 on each side.

Love your video. I remember these doors when I was a kid but haven't seen them recently. I have been looking for this type of hardware for a project I am doing (not a garage door) but can not find the hardware used or new. Would like to find some used hardware to keep my costs down. I want to see if I can get my one piece fence gate to open upwards so I can create some shade to work under. Any help?

insane. Are you still installing these doors? I wasn't even aware these parts were available. What cases would you recommend a chin buster over a standard sectional overhead?
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
willoughby cross That's a great question...and yes these parts are still available. I usually recommend this type of door when there's no other options, for example last week I did an estimate for a lady who had some very nice cabinets built into her garage and they literally built them around her existing 1pc door so I figured she would not be optimistic about moving them...I was right, but she really wanted the more modern sectional look so I recommended a steel 1pc door and it really was the only option other than another wood door. The 1pc steel doors look like sectionals but have a small gap on both sides...most people can't tell just driving by. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icBndZxorZbSf5s.html

Thank you so much for your simple and highly informative video!! I am an installer/tech and do not get the chance to work on many 1-piece doors these days! I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and expertise with everyone! I have just 2 questions, what make & model is this door? And can this installation and adjustment process be replicated on older models as well or is this set of instructions limited to this particular type of setup? Again, I Thank you for your time!
@ALLProGarageDoors6 жыл бұрын
sam robinson Thanks Sam! I do believe the door is a 1st United model #225 sectional then converted into a 1pc on a separate video, and yes you can apply this to older models as well... for the most part. Ofcourse you will always have to think outside the box because situations will vary, but if you ever get stuck or need something answered let me know.

Very informative and well done video. One question: How do you get the right springs? Do you buy them by the length, or by the weight of the door? Thanks
@ALLProGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
Usually 4- 728s (2 on each side) will balance most double car wood or steel doors. If the door is over 7'6" high then you would use a longer spring like a 730 or 732 . Theres always a chance you may have to make some of your finer adjustments to the hinges if the springs aren't perfect but if they are close and the opener can handle it then your good to go.

So how do you know what springs are needed in the first place? I think this video showed a P728 and a P528 on each side. Would it have been possible to use other combinations for the same door?
@ALLProGarageDoors6 жыл бұрын
Ivor O'Connor yes there is more than one combination to balance a door, I could have used all 728s and lowered the bolt on the kicker plate to stretch the springs more but then they would have a shorter lifespan, or I could have gone with all 528s and made the adjustments in the opposite direction as well. In reality its a guessing game based on experience and the knowledge that four 728s will do most doors that don’t have extensive trim designs or excessively thick plywood for a base. Most doors are 3/8 ply base with a minimal design. As you step up from that you can step up your spring size as well.

Upon opening and closing of a one piece door - it produces a decent amount of thrashing noises - what does that elude to? Worn hinges/hardware or bad springs?
@ALLProGarageDoors3 жыл бұрын
That could be a bunch of different things. Worn pivot points, unbalanced door, a rickety opener etc.
