Garage Storage Drawers Part 1

I am building a storage system for our basement. We are thinking of this as our garage - all the things that you would put in a garage minus the car; 64 junk drawers. The system is held up with a structure made from 2 by 4s. These built with mortise and tenon joints made with a Pantorouter. The drawers slide in dados in that structure. The drawers are fully removable so they can be carried around like a box full of stuff. This video is just building the structure and the drawers. The next video will be installing this structure and adding a French cleat wall for longer tools like shovels and rakes.

I started watching this channel when the kids were in grade school, and because adults don’t change much from year-to year, I’m always shocked to see how quickly kids grow up. You don’t see them for a year or two or three, and suddenly they’re teenagers! Claire and Calvin will forever be immortalized as kids in my mind, since that’s when I was watching almost only maker videos, exclusively.

Christian Stadler He gets no royalties (he refused to be paid for it). But he does get free pantorouter parts from the guy manufacturing it. His plans for the wooden version are his and sold online.

Been watching the pantorouter for years, but those stop motions of the joints being cut were fabulous. Better yet are the drawers doing "the wave" at the end. had to watch that several times. I'd be pretty pleased if you'd just post about a five minute loop of that. I'd watch!

Another great video from Frank, combining his architectural sense of design with his pragmatic woodworkers sense of practical wood usage and sheet goods yield considerations. I always appreciate Frank’s explanations as they tie together with his visuals; it makes it so easy and to really get what he’s saying with what he’s doing. We the viewers get to see into his mind, so to speak. Thanks Frank. You’re making us all better woodworkers, thinkers, and dreamers. There’s always a little spark of excitement when another Frank Makes video hits the feed.

Having made big repetitive projects like this, I know the urge to simplify it to make life easy. In this build all those corners are not cut. In fact Frank goes the extra mile to make a piece of fine furniture where many would use basic Ikea garage shelving. Not to mention the videography, which is, as always, stunning. Thanks Frank. You inspire.

The amount of time and attention to detail you put into your videos (not to mention the projects themselves!) is phenomenal Frank. Just love the stop frame animation segments. It reminds me of a kids TV programme we had here in the UK back in the 80's called Morph. Just puts a big smile on my face 😊👍

Be sure to check out the video in our support section on our website about dust collection hoses and how we secure it with a bend in the hose so it doesn't drag. Works great and is super fast and easy.

Calvin may look a bit sullen and unenthusiastic now, but in a few years he's going to treasure the time he had with his dad and the things he learned to do. For me, it was learning to drive a tractor (and later a car) and helping him by raking the hay and lubing the hay rake.

Superb. I did a project like this for a rolling shop table. It was not unlike Jeremy's, just portable and fewer drawers. I really struggled to keep my sides squared. I used plywood, and it just wasn't as controllable as the framed panels you made. Because of jointing and planing it would've been much more in my wheelhouse to treat those as perfect planar surfaces compared to, somewhat ironically, the plywood. For my small setup there is problem of so much dust collection. Then there's how hard such a project is on my jointer and planer blades. But, I guess that's why we buy the stuff. To use it! Great job.

I think they will stay straight. They may WANT to bend, but they are pretty restrained now by the structure. I don't think they can really bend.

Frank, I like the method you used to make drawer slides and I see you used 1/2" ply for the bottom. I have used that method over and over again but my drawers were smaller so I used 1/4" bottoms. They were very successful and I have used them now about 7 years and they still work fine. Mine was an experiment which proved alright. Thanks for your videos. I like them a lot. Nice video Frank, I’ve built similar pieces for clients in the past usually for their laundry rooms. The first one I did was like yours with no intermediate lateral supports, the wood bowed ever so slightly and made all the drawers on one side of the bow jam an the ones on the other side sloppy. Client kept using it in this state for about a year and eventually destroyed 9 of the drawer boxes. After this disaster I always add a spacer across the middle of all the bays to maintain dimensional integrity. If it disturbs the look you’re going for paint the spacer black and set it back 2” it helps hide it.

One of my earliest memories of this channel is you creating that wooden mallet. Good to see it in use in this video. (Still think the handle is a little long seeing the way you choke up on it). Great video Frank
