I dont immediately need the storage space but I know as life goes on we all tend to accumulate junk so this will be a good start for storage.

Thank you Jay for the excellent idea, I was contemplating buying a garage storage unit from Costco but your design works great and cheaper than $222.00. I would recommend to others to use lag screws to attach to the ceiling to add strength.

Thanks again Jay Bates I just got around to building this. Worked out amazing and going to build more. Happy I had the riving knife to rip the 2x4. Pinched when cutting. Used a spacer to measure off the wall as well which was easier for me. Perfect project for those w/o big tools though. Handsaw and drill! I used 2'x4' sheets of plywood so didn't have to cut them

Hi Jay, I have started building the Overhead Garage Storage Shelves in my garage. I built a 4 ft one above the door to the basement and found that the cleat attached to the ceiling got in the way when I put stuff up there. So on the ones down the rest of the side of the garage I put the cleat on the outside of the shelf brace. This seems to be working better. Thank you for all your inspirations.

Hey Jay. great video and thanks for all the cool shop ideas. Not sure if this was mentioned previously however a good tip for working on a ladder in this area is to DISCONNECT/disable the garage door opener to prevent a family member from opening the garage knocking you off the ladder by accident. This tip is from a close call experience I had while building a tire rack above the door. luckily no one was hurt but I did need to change my shorts after. lol

I've been looking for some storage solutions for over my garage door. I am definitely going to do this. Thank you so much. It's funny how when you buy a house, a lot of the projects shift toward things you need for your home. When you own a home, you never run out of projects.

Nice guest bedroom you built there. I'm at a similar stage to you in that I've grown tired of my one-circuit basic garage space. For those that are looking for a place to store long items, I did the same thing in my old garage, only I pulled it way out to 8 ft and was able to store sheet goods on one side and 8ft long lumber. Pretty much the same thing in my garage... It's a great place for off-season storage. Snow shovels and sleds go up there in the summer, and patio chairs and tables (disassembled) go up there in the winter. And so on. I used 3/8 or 1/2" osb (I forget which) on a frame of 1x2 stock. No sag after 10+ years. I put double-decker shelves on the opposite wall over the nose of the van - holds all my winter tires, as well as other stuff.

Jay Bates well, sort of like you : new home being a 40-year old house we're acquiring (move planned for november) which has a full-size basement "garage" where i'll store the 1966 Mustang and my modest workshop equipment... until I build a separate garage/workshop at the other end of the garden, which I plan to be the equivalent of a 3 or 4-car garage with photovoltaic panels on the roof (project for summer 2015 ?).

I’d put the OSB up before making the front part of the frame. Just tip it up at 45 degrees and hold it up with a screw in the ceiling. When the front is done you can just drop it down.

This looks good. My question is this: have you done any calculations to determine a maximum load rating? I'm guessing that the load will be dictated by the allowable shear stress in the bolts. But I would be interested in knowing how you sized everything. Thanks.

I tried this today. Got one side done. The other side was SLIGHTLY too long that it kept grazing the garage. Biggest pain to this whole project is our garage ceiling is a popcorn ceiling, so trying to run our stud finder across it makes all the dust and crap from the ceiling popcorn come down. That's literally the hardest part is finding studs. After that, it's really just wood into wood and making sure everything is level!
