Not actually true, there are plenty of diesel engines with less stroke length than gas engines. Mercedes OM606 is only ~86mm for example, chevy 4200 is ~106mm.
@petarmiletic997
@petarmiletic997 2 жыл бұрын
No, there are many automotive diesels that have a square or a nearly square bore to stroke ratio. Think old VW 1.6 TD and new 1.6 TDI, pretty much any Mercedes diesel made from 1980 to 2009. etc What makes them low revving is their cam profile. Aggresive cams severaly reduce low rpm compression, and diesels rely on heat from compression to combust. Meaning an agressive cam could make a diesel run better in high rpm, but you would have a hard time getting it started, especially cold

build an engine for MAX torque at low rpm
@petarmiletic997
@petarmiletic997 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true. You know how gassers with agressive cams run rough at low rpm ? Well diesels rely on heat of compression to ignite the fuel, so their cams must be mild to retain low rpm compression. Valve overlap will make your diesel impossible to start.
@tylerty7324
@tylerty7324 2 жыл бұрын
I am guessing the heads for a cam swap from gas to diesel would be alot different not allowing things to line up correctly. It might be worth looking into though, otherwise custom cam profiles aren't super expensive. You could probably get in contact with comp or someone of the sort and just tell them what you have and what you want and they should be able to figure the rest out. Low lift cams usually give you torque and sacrifice horsepower and high lift cams usually goes the other direction. Then you have lsa which also adjusts where in the power band peak horsepower comes in. I believe thats how that works. Then you have duration which does something too 😂.

Put the carburetor on the intake side of the turbo in order to use it as a draw through style. That will simplify your install as well as help cool the intake charge of the boost pressure. Then I would try using e85 or consider blending some diesel in with the gasoline to prevent detonation. As for the lack of power and at the higher RPM is most likely due to the camshaft profile and timing. Good luck!

Happy to see Vlad is well! I would suggest looking at a different camshaft. The diesel camshaft would be optimally designed to perform at a lower rev range consistent with that of a Diesel engine which is probably why the performance tails off over 3000rpm. Good results could be achieved from that engine as is on a carburettor, but set up correctly, without the need for a turbo or fuel injection.

The reason it still sounds like a diesel is because they are using the diesel exhaust manifold, the low RPM power is from the modestly sized cam used in diesel engines. Because the combustion chamber is the same shape the vibration frequencies are likely very close to the same as before the engine converted; also contributing to the diesel sound.

well if you put a turbo, make sure you retard the timing enough since it is already knocking, the extra pressure will definitely knock even more. also using the same turbo might help with the "volumetric" when it comes to how much air in/out it needs and in the same REV range. (unless Diesel expels more exhaust gas out...)
@glumpy10

Have done a lot with it, a very simple water injection setup would help with the knocking a lot. Does not need to be complex, I used a garden mist sprayer nozzle on a 60PSI diaphragm pump with a boost( Hobbs) pressure switch on some applications and just a switch under the throttle on others. Make a 50% Methanol mix for the WI and the things will really pick up some power and be hilarious to drive.

those diesel lifters are going to make the engine sound like a diesel even though it now uses gasoline. my 225 (3.7 L) slant six engines use solid valve lifters like the engine used to have when it was a diesel engine. Mopar never used hydraulic lifters on that engine that i am aware of. the changed the block casting to slant it 30 degrees so a lower hood profile could be used on their cars/trucks, changed the cylinder sleeves, the cylinder head and ignition timing, spark plugs sit here the diesel injectors would have been. so, if what you are hearing is a "rattling" like a diesel, that is why. my engines do it all the time, and are running on all 6 cylinders, and running good, pleanty of power/torque. glad to see you are back and better Vlad. also, maybe keep that young guy in more videos. it should be pretty strong compression wise, diesels way higher than a gas engine. you may have to lower the compression down to about 12:00 to 1, from 20 to 1. also, the Pistons and connecting rods and crank are way heavier, way stronger, but way heavier as well. so it'll be interesting to see how much power it actually would make. this is not uncommon. look up 350 Oldsmobile diesel. many drag racers in the 70s and '80s used to use these blocks from the diesel, as a race gas engine, due to its much stronger webbing. I haven't watched the video yet, let's see how it goes.,...

The power is low and its dropping off at high rpm because you're using a small carb and intake on a large engine. Its going to have a very similar power curve to the Lada but at lower rpm. Try two of those carbs. :)
@osbberjen

no, its the cam shaft, timings is way off. the carb may have something to do with it, but the cam is the main problem

@siraff4461
@siraff4461 2 жыл бұрын
@@osbberjen Cam timing isn't going to make that much difference that it drops dead at 4000rpm. There would be no gain to using a cam so small even in a diesel and especially in a turbo diesel. Its a mix of the intake being restrictive at that power level and the timing being all over the place. Oh and this diesel is a conversion of an older petrol. The architecture is pretty much identical and even the cam specs are the same as some of the lower powered petrol versions. Those engines make peak power (around 90ps) at 4700 and rev to over 6000 so that cam isn't holding a ~60hp Lada intake and carb back.

Uhmm, now i think that you guys should try to make a motor that you can go and Change from diesel to gasoline and vise-versa, like when on gasoline have one of the valves bein Open for a little bit for lesse compression and have both spark plug an injector
@Honey_Daddy
@Honey_Daddy 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean both spark plugs and a glow plug? Because gas cars often have fuel injectors also, so thats no big deal. Mainly older cars use carbs still. They could just buy any engine made after 2000 from honda or toyota and have spark plugs and fuel injectors. But diesels need glow plugs to run since they require more heat to start combustion than is provided by spark plugs. Sounds like this would mainly have to be two engines crammed into one car, imo. But i could be wrong about that part.

Shorten the conrods. This will do two things. It will give a lower compression ratio eliminating the detonation and will change the power to come on at higher revs. A shorter stroke will make the engine want to rev higher. And will be happier doing so. You would most likely need to consider a lighter flywheel and cam profile also. All these things could be done in separate videos to show the changes. Putting a turbo on before these changes, especially before lowering the compression ratio will not end well for the engine. Keep it up
@NuffMan_

pistons will hit the crankshaft with shorter conrods, maybe a few mm is possible but not much.. and it will not make the stroke smaller

The longer stroke effect from the diesel engine will give you the torque but they don't like to rev as hard. When we changed bus diesel engines to compressed natural gas we too put the plugs in the injector holes but the key thing was to reduce the compression ratio c/r from diesel level to gas/petrol level to stop pre-ignition. We refitted the head using two head gaskets and that dropped the c/r down to the required level and that worked fine. Only other change was the timing, natural gas burns slightly slower so you have to advance it a bit. Otherwise, guys, loved the video, well done and looking forward to part 2!

Diesel engines have a much higher compression ratio, which needs harder valves. This is what makes diesels sound so noisy.
