Your video just saved me $$$. I had bought a replacement friction wheel three years ago to have on hand because I noticed mine had a few chunks out of it. The blower still worked well the last couple of season but today during servicing, there was a lot of rubber dust under the hood sort of speaking. Took me awhile but accomplished the repair with no swear word spoken 😝

At 6:08 you mention to be careful to not get grease on the friction wheel. When I replace friction wheels I cover the rubber on the wheel with 2" blue painters tape and leave it on the wheel until I am finished working in what you refer to as "working in a toaster" place and leave the tape there until all the assembly work is done and I am ready to close up. At that point I remove the tape which leaves no resudue....a lost of risk saved. Just a FYI suggestion. I love watching you work and your attention to details..

JB, I want to thank you for posting this video. After viewing this a few times I felt confident enough to do this on my own. It took me a little over 2 hours to do this on my Ariens Platinum SHO 24 but I took my time, cleaned and greased what was needed and the final moment of truth when I fired it up and tested it out felt amazing when I saw that it worked!! The alternative would have been to wait 4-6 weeks for a mechanic to look at it which would essentially put me smack in the middle of winter with no snow blower and having to spend probably around $300 plus dollars to have someone else do this. Thanks again!! -Greg

Very helpful video! When I pulled out my snowblower this year, it wouldn't move forward in the higher gears. Found your video and ordered the same parts for my Ariens Deluxe 28. I I was shocked to see all the chewed up rubber in the pan when I pulled it off...yuck! I've had the Ariens for about 10 years but it sat in storage for the last 1.5 years due to garage rebuild, but it was time. Followed your instructions and I was able to swap out the friction disc and now all my gears are working. I've got my Ariens up to snuff thanks to you!! Now on to handwarmer kit install. Cheers!

Thanks for great video, there was a lot of great advice. I also tend to put cat litter down to absorb any oils or gas in case there is a leak. You might find this funny. I pulled off belly plate It was obvious the friction wheel was main issue. A big chunk was missing. But looking at drive wheel/plate, the way they form the edge with a valley and ridges on both sides, I was wondering if there was a missing belt too. So I was glad to see you showed drive wheel long enough to make sure there was no belt.

Ok this channel has helped me a lot. To do the friction wheel, not the whole disc, was my last Snow thrower project and challenge after auger belt, drive belt and tune up were completed. Problems I ran into - the bearing would not come off the shaft. I managed to pull the shaft from the wall of the auger housing and disassemble the wheel on the shaft in the housing.Things were progressing until, I realized I ordered the incorrect rubber wheel. I’ve learned a lot and gained some DIY courage from this channel. I sewed the machine back up and made sure I am running and may retry this effort on a warm Saturday or Sunday. Thanks GG.

I replaced the friction wheel on my 29 year old John Deere machine several times and each new wheel did not make the difference I expected. Then I read the owner's manual (DUH) and found out I could adjust the wheel position to make better contact with the disc. So now if I wear out the friction wheel, I have several spares that I can use instead of buying any more new ones. And adjusting is easier than replacing.

Some great information here and great advice. I see on one comment, you did talk about brake cleaner, but I would like to talk about it some more. It’s true it was time to change this friction wheel. However, I could’ve gotten this thing going for several storms by simply removing the belly pan and spraying the metal wheel and friction disk with brake cleaner, taking shop rags and cleaning the metal wheel and spinning the friction wheel into the rag to clean it. Anytime, I’ve got the belly pan off I wipe off the metal wheel with brake cleaner. When you clean a friction wheel with brake cleaner, a lot of black stuff comes off of it. Here’s the reason, Probably dirt as well as I think some rubber because I believe it actually seems to bring the rubber alive or soften it up. Doing this in excess may likely reduce the life of the wheel I’m guessing. But boy oh boy, does it stick and drive those wheels. You can do burnouts like crazy even with an old worn out friction wheel. One other thing we need to talk about is the defect that some model snowblowers have. Almost all snowblowers do use friction wheels, but they have a problem especially if they’re stored outside, they get snow and ice down inside the base and on the friction wheel drive. This defect is an admitted factory defect on some models, and still a defect, but not admitted by the factory on others. So the answer here is to store machine inside or you better really have it tarped up well. Along the same lines of thought, even some machines can get ice and snow on the friction drive when in operation and in heavy snowfall. You’d think this would’ve been planned better, but they just don’t care. A Snow machine you can’t take in the snow doesn’t make any sense does it? Check your reviews before you buy!

Really enjoy the videos! It is almost impossible to avoid grease/lube getting on the rubber of the friction disc and/or the friction plate imo. I normally use a bit of gasoline on a shop towel and give the rubber a quick wipe and the plate a good wipedown every season when I grease. Works like a charm! The rubber transfer to the friction plate sticks a little and builds up a film and this helps remove it. Also, while I love Red and Tacky grease, I tend to go for a generic snowmobile grease on the gears/chains and hex shaft. It's a little lighter and doesn't get "stringy" in the cold. Just my $.02 worth... but as a Canadian, that may NOT be worth much with the exchange 😅

I’ve had an Ariens 8/28 for over 10 years and never changed the friction wheel. They wear out from trying to make the snowblower push through to hard and/or fast. Ease off the drive control and let the auger and impeller do there job before pushing your drive lever down. I learned this from replacing many drive/friction wheels on our school district snowblowers. Just a thought.

I also have an Ariens Classic that really slams into action when engaging the auger. I fear it may snap the belt. The mechanics of engaging show a fairly steep angle change on the metal bar that effects the engaging of the auger. is there a way to machine the bar so the transition from disengaged to engaged puts less instant strain on the belt? Would appreciate a video on this topic.

Awesome content as always brother! Thought I needed a new friction disk but your video actually helped me figure out a different issue just watching you disassemble everything. My drive belt was worn/stretched so I had alot of the same symptoms. What I noticed is that when I engaged the drive lever, the mower would barely move. I pulled the cover, tried again and noticed the metal drive wheel would almost stop spinning once the friction disk was engaged. This lead me to believe the belt was slipping. Got a new one and shes moving out straong again. Just wanted to share in the event my situation could help someone else. Thanks again for all the detailed content and awesome presentation. Definite 👍

This sounds like what is going on with my Classic 24 (see my comment above). While troubleshooting with the help of a friend we took the belly plate off, tipped the unit up on the auger housing (not all the way into service position) and engaged the drive handle. The drive plate moves up to contact the friction disk but the drive plate is not spinning at all, either when it’s not in contact or is in contact with the friction disc. Could this be my problem why my wheels aren’t turning?

Thank you for sharing your awesome tutorial!! I have a Husqvarna 10527STE snowblower in which I'm at a complete loss in regards to why it won't stay engaged while in drive. When under load of just 4" of snow, it won't stay engaged at all. I changed the drive friction rubber ring, drive / auger belts along with a new traction idler spring & bias spring to boot. In addition, I thoroughly lubricated shaft, metal parts including the steering assemblies. I thought for sure it was the rubber friction ring after seeing it was worn. The new rubber friction ring is making great contact against the drive wheel assembly therefore, I can't believe that's the issue. As for the belts & springs, they really didn't need changing but, I had the parts and did so anyway. The following video shows the power steering assembly disengaging / engaging which is happening on both sides simultaneously on its own without touching the steering triggers. Any thoughts for a remedy would sincerely appreciated Thanks again and Happy New Year!! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLWJaK5msr7SfoU.html

There are a couple things I would have added to this job. Since the friction wheel and associated parts were already out, this would have been a perfect time to clean out the entire compartment with brake clean and start fresh with lubrication on all parts. I also would have removed the plastic seals on the bearings, flushed them out and lubricated. Since the hex shaft requires lubrication I would have used a grease good for sub-zero temps. Otherwise, thanks for a great video and superb production qualities. Definitely worth the effort! 👍🔧

The bolt repositions the friction disc where it needs to be for all gears. Thanks for watching!

@@GarageGear i dont have that adjustment. Its just a shaft , that goes down to level ..not long ago , id say spring time reverse was working .. The handle goes to the gears , which is to the left ..but to the right for reverse , no go ...

@@edgardomatos7742 oh ok thanks for clarifying. Pop it up and give it a look. I’m wondering if the disc will need replacement.

Any idea beyond a bad winter why the disc would fail after a year? It partially peeled right off? I replaced it last year during a wicked winter and 75 yard x 9 yard path that i had to continuously blow. Looked in the machine and can't see any reason for it. No undo marking on flywheel, nothing impeding, well greased on slide axel but not excessive. Stumped?

Hey gib a little hard to tell without seeing it in person. I’ve heard some of these friction discs are made poorly. I heard from mechanics that the Oregon branded ones are good. I would also check your belt/cable tensions to make sure they are not excessively tight.

Those bearings are covered. To get ANY grease on the bearing surfaces and to remove any old grease, you need to carefully remove those side plates by gently prying them off. Clean them, apply the grease and replace the covers. OR!!! just replace them. They're relatively inexpensive. Especially since they've been on there a while and they may not make it before the rubber on that disc wears out again. FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

Hi there. I have a Honda HS55 and when I opened the belly panel I've noticed that the friction disc wobbles all over the place. I'm guess that isn't normal lol. Let me know please and thanks.

Hey dexter! This isn’t normal. It sounds like the friction disc mount that it’s on is worn and in need of replacement! Thanks for watching!
