Great video!! Nick is a beast and can’t wait to see him play college ball and hopefully on Sundays. His work ethic stands out to me and that is the glue that makes everything work. Without the work ethic and tapping into his natural training personality then everything falls apart. That to me is what separates a really good coach to an average one. You’re able to bring out the best in the people/athletes you coach, train, etc. You’re able to do that my man. Great job to you!

Hey loving your videos been watching and listen for last 3 days it’s great stuff really helping me out with what I lacked in mental confidence. I’m a 33 father of two who loves sports have got back into rugby union I’m a front rower but wanna become a flanker or lock, American football I love you laying FB or LB and I enjoy Olympic weightlifting, from your videos I’ve learnt that I can train for 3 of these around the same time. My question is since doing more football and working my way back to Olympic weightlifting how should I focus my training program and nutrition. Juddy out

@Garage Strength My son follows your channel. He started using Peak Strength app. He's lifting for his High School program, doing the app 5 days a week after school, and stopped wrestling so he can focus on lifting for football. Is that going to get him to be a freak athlete?

Great Stuff, Dane! I once had a teacher who told me, "Talent alone is INSUFFICIENT, for true success you need OVERWHELMING determination", and that is what stops most from becoming GREAT (rater than just good / OK). Of course, it's better if that determination comes from within - which it clearly does in Nick's case (did I ever meet him?), but having a great Coach who understands the "individual", as well as having a detailed program certainly makes a BIG difference as well! And it seems like all the GS athletes have that in SPADES! So congrats to you, GS and Nick for your achievements! I know I'm dating myself but I would have LOVED to see Nick operate in a Joe Paterno "wish-bone" or "I-back" offensive unit!

If i understood correctly you said he started to chase his dream at sixth grade, meaning like 12 year old? If I'm in 2 years ballpark, I would also give great compliments to you as a coach that you took him under the wing even if he was not that gifted to begin with. I really believe that if you this kind of person that you just want to try your best and love doing some sports or whatnot, that even if you start "late" that you are still given a proper chance to train and show what you are capable of. Where I live, I think there is a big problem that if you haven't started in a sport under 10 years old, you don't have a chance to join in later even if you are highly motivated unless you are already really gifted to begin with. And in last 20 years it has been a steady decline across multiple international sports results. Number 1 factor is the motivation and love of what you are doing.

For the absolute strength movement (back squat, front squat, single leg squat, etc), what kind of rep scheme do you use?

You could start with lighter weight/higher reps and work your way down. Week one could be sets of 10, 10, 10. Week 2 would be 10, 10, 8, and week 3 could be 10, 8, 8. Then week 4 would be 8,8,8, then 8,8,6, then 8,6,6, before you get down to 6,6,6. Then it would be 6,6,4, then 6,4,4, then 4,4,4. Finally, 4,4,2, and then 4,2,2. This style of training lets you incorporate both high and low reps into your training. The high number of reps early on will teach your CNS to better perform that movement before you really start pushing towards maximal loads

Too many reps to start off, Do 5x5 first week, 3x 3-5 second week, 5/3/1 3rd week then restart with heavier weight

See the Wendler (5/3/1) method. Pair that with a 110% TDEE diet. This is an effective rep scheme paired with a lean bulk nutrition program.

how to long term develop for a young football athlete? I feel like a lot of programme out there focus on developing the football respective energy system and other attributes but not on muscle mass, maybe it is for more established athletes in terms of muscle mass so they need to transit their training to strength, power etc. But at the younger age their muscle mass is not that established yet that solely focus on strength, power would have less efficiency.

build a base of strength and get your form correct nothing fancy but build a solid bench, squat, deadlift, power clean etc. if even younger just bodyweight reps such as pushups, pullups etc.

many things will help 1) practice running 2) work on your running form 3) lift with a decent program 4) eat healthy 5) sleep well and long

Ive seen skinny ass tall ectomorphs turn into muscle packed beasts. Like giannis in the nba. Stop with your negativity thinking that way. Yes it is true that genetics play a big role in sports. But all that means is that people without that advantage have to work harder. Look at derrick henry. He’s a 6’2-6’3 running-back, i guarantee he had to and was told to work on his acceleration more than anything else or else he wouldn’t be able to play runningback in the nfl.

BULLSHIT. This works in highschool, this doesn't work when you're on your own, no coach, needing to not only do the work but know what to do, without a coach telling you what to do, or worse, when your coach doesn't know what he's talking about. If your coach is good this works sure but if you're on your own this doesn't work.
