Let plants grow past normal harvest times and be rewarded with seeds. There are some good reasons why allowing some of your plants to flower and seed makes sense. Gardener Scott discusses why to let garden plants set seed and why he grows a seed garden. (Video #293)

I let my zinnias, cosmos and marigolds go to seed every year. I let them self-sow. Because I live in a windy area, it's always fun to see where they will pop up!

the best part is you can grow old seeds. i just transplanted a bunch of leeks from 3 year old seeds. i still grow lettuces from 10+ year old seeds. every year, I grow some of my oldest seeds. it is rare for all of them to fail. mostly i get full germination. sometimes i collect the seeds and just leave in containers around, in sun, heat and sometimes rain or mold. this yesr, i also grew a bunch of kabocha from 2 year old moldy seeds. they all sprouted, unlike my newly purchased zucchini and yellow squash seeds. the new zucchini all failed (i am still trying - i guess i keep trying until I run out of seed), and the yellow squash mostly failed and took forever to germinate. still not sure if any of those will grow at all. meanwhile my kabocha from 2019 seed saved from a purchased kabocha are all rambling about and have already produced. i really enjoy growing out brassica seeds, since they are all different and beautiful and give me tons of greens to eat.

Thank you for the video. FYI, if you look closely at your daikon radish flowers, you'll see they have a very slight purplish tint to the. If you look at the smaller American radishes, you'll find they are white. If you look at a turnip flower, you'll find it has a slight pinkish tint, but you'll find that apart from that, all the flowers look the same. Just a word, double check your germination rate on your American radishes. They don't have a high one unless you have several thousand plants growing. I think they're like kale that way.

What do you think of the idea of setting aside one (or two) raised beds simply for seed generation?

Been doing just that, for about 4 years! It works great. Then you must tend only a small area, then transplant them out...

I like the idea. Most seeds last for about three years, so having a cycle of one or two beds for seed generation ensures viable seeds.

Oh, we're growing around ten varieties of radish, and since they are out-breeding plants, they combine in interesting ways. Some of the radish pods were double sized at least, and some of them had a few rows of seeds instead of a single line of them, so the normally short pods were more packed with seeds. One or two varieties even have pink flowers, so we can't wait to see how next year's plants grow.

I started saving seeds from purple radishes that resulted from a random cross pollination. The flowers were purple too. It was a fun activity but I wasn't able to stabilize the new creation.
@NashvilleMonkey1000
@NashvilleMonkey1000 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, you should know that the purple color in radishes shows up when it has one of each, red and white gene for bulb color, so by definition the purple radishes are hybrids, so creating an heirloom purple radish is defeated by mathematics, unless a mutation breaks the way it currently works.

Thank you for a great video that confirms an idea I already had. I square foot garden in a small space and, while I wanted to save seeds, I didn't like tying up limited growing space with a plant going to seed. When I move to my retirement property, I will dedicate a bed to seed producing plants. In the meantime, I may get some grow bags to put the seed plants in.

This year has produced tons more food plant seeds than any other year. I definitely have a problem with balancing food versus seeds, and that's why certain plants do well for all of us. Especially with tomatoes, where making food is making seeds, and I've even decided that the only skill in growing tomatoes is simply two checkmarks, one for starting plants before the season and one for handling self-seeded plants. We have no ego invested in our tomatoes, they simply grow and by the end of summer every flat surface in the kitchen is covered with them, simply by having enough plants. This year peppers are doing just as well, so we're more than content.

So I'm letting my green ice lettuce go to seed and I notice that it's making this sticky exudate that wasps are attracted to. I think they're eating it? Not sure. I couldn't find any bugs or anything (at first I thought that they might be eating aphids). It's interesting the carbohydrate sources besides flower nectar that they can utilize. I also let my yugoslavian red lettuce bolt and it had really nice more dandelion-type corollas that were more attractive to bees than I've seen for other lettuce types. I think it would be cool to select crops for some of their beneficial bolting characteristics, not just their vegetative ones :)

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I had a volunteer cantaloupe near the asparagus bed, my hubby thought it was honeydew which is not possible. I was right love saying that it was a cantaloupe. Best tasting ever. I wonder did it acclimate to our zone 7b? I'm interested in seed saving. TFS
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
The best cantaloupe I ever tasted was a volunteer that showed up in one of my beds. The seed may have been introduced through compost or a bird that ate seeds from someone else's compost.

Lovely video Scott. I'm curious whether or not it's true that planting seeds you've grown in years past can better acclimate the plant genetics to your climate than in years past?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It takes many generations and careful seed selection to get plants that acclimate to a climate. There are many factors beyond the age of the seed. By saving seeds from the plants that do best in your garden you can help continue the success.

This is my first year growing my own vegetables. I am growing in containers, so if I want my spinach and romaine to go to seed should I stop watering them? Should I keep them from getting rain. I know my spinach has bolted and started making seed pods, but they are not dried out yet. Thank you!
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
Keep watering until the heat of summer starts the bolting. You want a strong plant to generate flowers and seeds. Stopping water can weaken the plant.

Do you have to worry about hybrid vs heirloom when it comes to the plants mentioned in this video (lettuces, radishes, broccoli,..)?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Жыл бұрын
If you save seeds you should save from heirloom or open-pollinated plants to get seed that will produce the same plant. While you can save seed from hybrids, you won't get the same plant as the parent.

I get seed from both because I'm attempting to create my own wild-growing, naturalized hybrids over several generations of letting many genetically compatible varieties go to seed in ultra-high density massively polycultural hugelkultur-edged beds with zero harvesting (except for the soil and nature!). Phoenix 9b food forest creating an oasis in the desert. Already have all the minerals and sun we could ever need, just need to exponentially promote water and shade and organic matter. @@GardenerScott

What about cross pollination of plants in the same family? This has been my biggest hesitation. If I want to have a few different varieties of heirloom tomatoes, how do I keep them separated and not cross pollinated?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
Cross pollination can be an issue if you save seeds of open pollinated plants. There is less concern with tomatoes. They tend to pollinate themselves with very little cross pollination. You can grow them in separate beds but I regularly collect tomato seeds from plants next to each other with no hybridization.

@@GardenerScott Would this be the same for peas and beans? Also, I often get powdery mildew on my peas. Should I save seeds from plants that have powdery mildew? One more question...(for now :))...is it better to save seeds from the beginning of the growing season versus the end? Is the quality/germination better at the beginning of the season? Thank you very much for your help and encouragement! It is very helpful!!!
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
Both peas and beans tend to self pollinate. To reduce future problems, it's best to discard plants with powdery mildew, but the seeds are okay to save. Seeds from the beginning of the season are less likely to have cross pollination issues and those are the ones I tend to save.

I planted a bunch of radishes in the fall and let them over winter and they sprouted in the spring and I completely forgot about them and everything went to seed. Since they have... Can I leave them to turn over the bed till next spring? Or should I have actually collected seeds?

You can leave them. Some will decompose and some may sprout in spring. Next time you can plan to collect them.
