If anyone is curious, I started a test in the beginning of Fall where I planted my Cherry Bell radish seeds then harvest them all when they were ready in around 2 months. I kept the roots intact for the majority of these radishes, and I then replanted them in containers so as to separate them from the garden bed they would have stayed in. I needed that space for tomatoes. They all eventually regrew their green leaves and survive my god awful dirt / soil until now. They're flowering right now in those very containers, seeing as we now have a hot spell of weather. One of the radishes must be 3" by now, which is insane. I'm curious how many radish seeds I'll be able to save for the first time. I easily ran out of my packet's seeds so I'm hoping to get a lot more. Enjoy my findings!

Thanks for doing this seed saving series. Love it when I see a video of your's since I'm growing radishes right now. I'm taking notes on your instruction. Seems myself and my dad are those only ones that see seed saving as being useful. Everyone else just thinks growing food is a waste of time because ew vegetables, and I can buy it at the store if I want it. lol

I did this for the first time this year. It was accidental, saw something flowering in my tomato bed. I forgot I had put in radishes very early. Once done flowering I broke up a dried pod and realized it was a radish. I proceeded to collect lots more of the seeds for use next spring.

I had the same accident and left radishes too long. I saw the huge plant with flowers and almost pulled it thinking it was a weed before I realized it was the radish. I have tons of pods outside and now know what to do with them! Thanks Scott!

@@JacobSmithEngineer All you guys keep saying this, but not saying the next obvious thing... Is this the time to harvest? I recently discovered this strange pod plant in my garden was a radish after comparing the seeds to those in my bag of radish sprouts. I suppose I will dig the root up to determine if I should bother keeping the seeds... if now is the right time?

The green seed pods are also really yummy. I ate those because I didn't think about saving the seeds. So either way, it's a win.

They actually tend to be milder when it’s warm than the root. They make an excellent addition to salads just like the root.

I just smashed a bunch of pods at once, separated the seeds that came loose. With so many pods and seeds, no need to be too precise. Seeded them this past spring and have another crop now (Daikon).

My radish has flowered. Glad for the info. I'll be looking for seed pods now ❤ I have wild mustard that came up and it's covered with thick needle like pods. I did open one and the tiny contents must be seed. Found a second plant near tracks and brought it home.

You always explain so thoroughly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Two questions: 1) Do I stop watering a plant that I want to dry up to go to seed? 2) Last year I saved marigold seeds and not one seed germinated. Why do you think that is ?

Keep watering the plant until you collect seed. Many need to stay alive to feed the maturing seeds. The marigold seeds may not have been fully mature.

I have a daikon I left, part of one I had bought from the grocery store, in the back of my fridge for too long and it sprouted a bit while in there so I put it in leaves and needles ive got in raised beds for next year and figured it would compost... And 2 weeks later it's a foot tall sprout going to seed with the first buds starting to open already

I have been trying to grow radishes - everywhere. No matter what I grow them in, or sun, partial shade, etc the end result is always RADISH STICKS. Can't get a ball radish. Guess I'll just have to accept the seed pods, keep adding the radish sticks into munch pile. The leaves are tasty, anyway. 😂

In the case of daikon as long as it grows I would think you could harvest a large portion of every daikon and still let them back to set seeds..

Planted daikon in a couple areas to break up some hard clay. I was going to save seed from the first area, saw the flowers, a small bud form then just a twig. I was like dang the seeds are getting eaten. So I pulled that first area and been lazy about clearing the second area. Found out that the twig will swell into a pod, I was just seeing the old flower falling off after it was done with it's job. Live an learn. So now I'm waiting on the pods to dry but they seem to stay green forever.... still waiting but I'll get those seeds yet.

This is exactly what i needed to know! Thank you. I've got petals falling off and just a small skinny twig type thing left behind so really hoping this will swell into pods. The bees are forever busy around my plants so fingers crossed.

Thanks for the video. When do you stop watering the plants that have gone to seed? I don’t want my plant to die before the seeds are ready to harvest, but also, I want the seed pods to dry at some point! Thanks again.

I keep watering as long as the plant is green or until I collect the seeds. The pods will dry on the plant while it is still alive and growing.

Hi G.S. Peace. I planted American radishes back in March. I harvested them all in May, and I liked them so much I planted them again in June. Now, I'm trying to get seeds from them, and It's October, and they're not even close to bolting. It's been an uncharacteristically wet summer, and now I'm in the middle of hurricane season- something that won't end until winter. How can I get my radishes to bolt? My first frost is the first week of December. On a different note, radish seeds are edible. They're great for a crunchy salad

It's probably too late for them to flower this year. There's a chance some of the roots will survive winter and send up a flower stalk in late spring, but it might be better to just start seeds in spring with the intent of letting them bolt in summer.

I like to break up the pods and then winnow them. The amount of time it would take to separate them out one pod at a time would stress me out badly. I harvest a lot of seeds for planting and eating.

If you have stored them correctly, (i.e.: Kept dry in a cool dark place/container), then the seeds may still be viable. You can try starting the seeds in seed starting pots and see what sprouts.

I’ve heard that you have to transplant a good looking radish plant and then wait for it to grow and produce seeds. Basically, it takes two seasons to grow seeds as I understand it. Can you elaborate on this please? I’m in California, zone 9. Thank you.

It depends on the variety. Most radishes will flower and seed in the first year but there are some biennial varieties that will produce seeds in the second season after overwintering in the ground.

Instead of designating a section of the garden specifically for collecting seeds, can I plant radish, lettuce and carrots together in a large pot to collect seeds? Or should I use a large pot for each plant?

You can plant them together in the same pot, but the radish will seed in the first year while the lettuce and carrots usually seed in the second season.

QUESTION: Scott, will a harvested and air-dried GREEN pod... give me viable seeds? I have limited time to attend my garden, and I am concerned that my daikon radish pods will open and re-sow one sunny day while I am at my employment. I also want to save the seeds for future use. There are large pods on most of the plants currently, but the pods are apparently full-size but still green. Do I have to let the pods brown and dry in place for the seeds to be viable? Is there a narrow time-window before the pods crack themselves open, or will they remain dry for at least a week?

Green pods are less likely to provide viable seeds. The pods stay closed for a long time after they turn brown on the plant so there is little concern that they will burst open before you can collect them.

Desperate Question here, I see grubs in my turnip seed pods, i think they are weevils? Must i destroy the whole seed crop? How normal is this? I see them in my kale and radish pods as well.

You don't need to destroy the crop. If it's a turnip beetle or vegetable weevil you can still save the seeds.
