Hi Linda! Everything is looking so beautiful. I noticed that you have uplighting in the center of your new trees. Would you and Stewart be willing to do an evening garden stroll for us so we can experience the magic of the nighttime garden, the lighting, etc.? :) Would be interested in learning more about the type of lights you have!

Oh my goodness, I made the same mistake, I bought a tan umbrella and it's just not right. When it's open it even looks a little yellow so now I have to either keep an umbrella I don't like or buy a grey one I know I'll like better. Unfortunately it's too late to return. 😏 So, now that I see how awesome your grey one looks, I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and spend the money for a grey one I know I'll love. Oh well.... Your yard is looking beautiful Linda! It's amazing how much you've accomplished in such a short time!

I would always use the botanical name (generally I think we do that more in the UK) as there is less room for error. Common names are different depending on the country you are in. The botanical name sometimes gives you a clue about the plant as well. Your garden is looking fabulous.

Loved seeing the weeding and propagating! I also have squirrel moments in the garden, where I start one task and keep moving on to others. Especially with weeding. Thank you Linda for sharing your gardening skills and your beautiful garden. You have created a masterpiece, just like a magnificent painting or tapestry. I am so inspired by your use of colour through your use of shrubs and bushes that I am going to design a similar area in my garden here in subtropical Australia. Have you been to Australia?🐨 I have heard you mention that your son? I think, lived here. I really like the way that you plant seeds directly in your garden. I have always planted hardy annuals that way, but after seeing your seedlings come up I will be more adventurous! 🦜🐧🌺🌻🌴🍁

Your front garden is filling in so beautifully! Thank you for the great tips on creating new plants and expanding coverage with snippets of existing plants. I like the new umbrella color much better; wise decision and a bonus that you can use the other one in the backyard. I find common names easier to remember; however, since I’m concentrating on native plants, I do also use the botanical as it’s important when purchasing natives to be specific. Wednesday’s walk-about was great fun!

Hi Linda! You have some very pretty plants and plant combos. I was wondering though, why you don't have a designated path through them. As the plants grow, it's going to be harder and harder for you to step around in them. Also, visitors are limited to only seeing the garden from the central walkway, sidewalk or street. One of my favorite things to do in my garden is to walk the paths looking at everything. And, when my neighbor's grand daughters visited, they loved walking through the garden that way too. Anyway, it's just a thought.
@judyburton6338

I agree. I think a path on both sides would be nice so you can stroll and look at all the pretty plants. That would require moving some plants now though.

.....I think Linda was going to add more stepping stones but just hasn't had the chance to acquire more. At least that is what she stated about late April....As she didn't want o compact the soil. She mentioned she had several speaking engagments then her sons came to visit for Mothers Day and she was rushing to put dome order into her backyard for their visit. I wait like you to see her stone path completed soon.

In Canada, we call serviceberry a saskatoon. The trees grow wild but we can now buy them at most garden centres. Plentiful rain in the spring produces large, juice berries. In dry springs, the fruit is drier and less luscious. They make wonderful pie, jam, and are great additions to muffins etc. The indigenous people used them dried in pemmican. Some people would prefer that they didn't have large seeds but alas, they do. On the Canadian Prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) saskatoon pie is the ultimate! Enjoy!

I am so glad you change the umbrella! I did not like the color of the other one in your garden but did not say anything because I thought it would be rude. But the gray goes perfectly. Also I always use the common name for plants because I remember it easier. And I was out in my garden today. I got a great deal on Kimberly ferns at Walmart that were almost dead. I asked and the manager mark them down to four dollars! I came home and split them and instead of two ferns I now have five. Which I love to scatter ferns in pots around under trees were there’s too many roots to grow plants. They quickly fill in a dead spot.

I think an arbor at the top of the stairs with a pale pink David Austin climbing rose growing on it would really add to the English cottage garden feel of your yard. A very rustic, weathered driftwood-looking arbor that looks like you made it from an old tree that you cut down from your own garden would be a great focal point. I also think some rosemary and lavender would be great additions to the hottest/driest parts of your front yard… English lavender makes a great low growing mounding shrub that looks like a ground cover. It thrives on neglect, all it needs is good drainage, so it’s perfect for the sloped parts of your yard. When it’s done blooming, I just deadhead it and it looks like a sage carpet on my yard. Great contrast with red foliaged shrubs! At least one Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry should be on your short list of shrubs/trees to add to your garden. They’re great understory trees, so they tolerate partial shade from larger trees. They’re awesome planted close to a window because they’re very sparsely branched, so they don’t block the light/view from inside the house and they provide seasonal interest year round. Beautiful blooms in Spring and amazing Fall color! 🍂 🍂🍂

I like the usage of the botanical name & adding the common name also, it allows us to learn regional differences & increase our knowledge. In western Colorado where the scrub oaks, chokecherries, & service berries intermingle & grow wild everywhere, the old - timers call the service berry, sarvisberries & correct you for your lack of knowledge. Usually a dash of lemon juice is added to enhance their rather bland flavor when making pies.

Everything looks beautiful! I always get a tip or two from your walk about that I use in my own garden. Just wondering if you ever considered moving topiaries off of front porch to another location. Would look less cluttered and would show off the front door. There is so much going on in the yard that a more simplistic approach on the porch would enhance that!

You're a wealth of information. You have inspired me to add flowers in containers and dig a small flower bed. I had two huge mulberry trees in my front yard, and they were very diseased and died. I was heartbroken, and my yard looked so bare and sad. My mulberry trees in my backyard died also. I have to start all over and landscape my backyard. I guess I have my work cut out for me.

Love how the entire yard is progressing, Linda. Especially that side yard. I'm also waging war against Bermuda. I wonder if spraying with vinegar will just kill what's exposed? Or go down the rhizome (?) to it's root cluster? I've trenched between me and the neighbor, to keep their Bermuda from creeping over. But I think I'll reserve the right to have a brick edging in the future. Hoping to keep it at bay with the vinegar solution, going the Bermuda won't go nuts when I'm on vacation. 🙄

Ajuga is a great ground cover. The blooms in spring are pretty. I like the ajuga with a purple look. Can take the sun. I love the wire plant but here the sun is very hot. I put in partial sun. The garden is looking lovely. Thank you for your demonstration. We love you Linda & Stewart too.
