If you're trying to convert tracks to route in Garmin Basecamp and keep getting that straight line, here's what the problem is: The Baseline gps software system is not loaded with the maps you need for navigation. This is the work-around I found. (Windows OS).

Thank so much for the tutorial. I have a trip coming up in 10 day and for the last 6 weeks I have been trying to create tracks and routes but it was all too confusing until I found your two videos. After that it only took me 2 hrs... Thanks

Another issue is that if you import a GPX file, Basecamp will create "tracks" (hundreds of waypoints, accurate) and a "route" which has straight lines and is garbage. It does that immediately, not like you created that "route". If you select the tracks (right click on the track file bottom left of Basecamp) you get the option to "create route" and assuming you have proper maps installed, THAT route will be OK but the initial one created when imported the GPX file will remain "visible" on the map as straight lines. Delete that route, by select it (bottom left of Basecamp window). * The other thing that happens is you create a route from a track but it may take 30 seconds or more for the STRAIGHT LINE to show actual route. The BIG DELAY is because even a short track across town can contain hundreds, or thousands of "points" and the program takes a while to convert those points to a driveable route. Now the route will appear OK, but you have to look very carefully to make sure it isn't taking you on a dirt road, or where roads don't actually go through, etc. * If you SIMULATE driving the route (top right of Basecamp window) you can zoom it as it shows the route (100x or 1,000x speed) and make sure there are no detours where accidently clicked on a driveway rather than the road, or unplanned U-turns due to sequencing of waypoints screwed up. You don't want to discover that during a road trip.

install Garmin Express. Connect your Garmin while running Express. Express will allow you to install the same map that is on your device into Basecamp. Now there is no need to hook up your device to route.

Yours is the best instruction on moving google map routes to a Garmin device I've viewed. However, I have not been able to get anything other than the route to my Garmin GPS & I haven't seen anyone demonstrate any flagged list of stops marked on the Garmin routes as they are shown in the base camp map. Your final comment on this video, I believe, was something like "there you have it, the turn-by-turn route showing on my Zumo ". Just wondering if the stops showing on your base camp map did indeed transfer over to the gps?
@MototasticAdventures
@MototasticAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary. Yes, the stops do carry over into the gps. When you transfer it from Basecamp into the device, you'll access it from the "My Trips" app on the Zumo.

@@MototasticAdventures I did in fact, last night, find my stops listed in "Saved places" (recently found). I'm using a new DriveSmart 65 for automobile trip use. But they don't show up on the gps map route. Seems like seeing your places of interest on the map at least would alert you to get directions if those have to be looked up in the saved places page. They do show up on the base camp map as flags & identification when hovered over. Thanks again for your interest in helping your viewers.

@@garycolson3010 Are you using a PC or Mac? I'm not sure if there's much difference in the application, but I wonder... I'm not familiar with Apple OS. I have a friend who uses Apple, and his process seems to work about the same as mine on the PC. I googled the DriveSmart 65. I see it has apps available, but am not able to see which apps it has. I am assuming that the "My Trips" app is a staple for all Garmin products. I'd love to try and troubleshoot with you. Have you had any further luck in getting the turn by turn, yet?

@gary colson Also, sometimes, when I don't have a PC, I enter the waypoints directly into the 'My Trips' app in the device.

@@MototasticAdventures Thank you so much for your helpful efforts. Don't think I'm communicating clearly. To answer your question, don't see a "My Trips" app in the Garmin DriveSmart65, but do have "Trip Planner" app which stores trip flagged points I have transferred from "My Maps (Google) to Garmin "BaseCamp" to Trip Planner (GPS). Again, when selecting such a Trip saved in "Trip Planner" it contains all the flagged point locations that originally were identified in "My Maps" & transferred fine into base camp & ultimately show up as titled location points in the "Trip Planner" list. I expected those listed/saved points of the Trip in "Trip Planner" to automatically show up on the the GPS route that transferred , per your excellent instruction video, perfectly to the GPS map of that trip. I thought the map route path would lead one to each of those points as it did in basecamp. As an alternative, would it at least be useful while riding a highlighted rout on the GPS map, if those flagged points listed in "Trip Planner, or "My Trips" were noted in some way on the map. One would then at least be reminded that directions to those points of interest would be available by scrolling though "Trip Planner" & selecting that point for the gps to show the path to that "way point". I think your answer is that one can put those listed points into the map ahead of riding the trip to alter the route to those points. Anyway, if my "wants" are misplaced or the communication still confusing, no need for you to waste more time trying to figure things out. Trouble shooting fun can get old real quick & you've expended admirable effort on this issue.

Thank you so much for the straight line problem. Unfortunately, after hours of watching videos and setting up BaseCamp and My Maps, the map in Trip Planner looks correct until I hit Go. At that point, it calculates my route starting from home in Oregon, and not the route I plotted, which was a campground in Virginia to a campground in Pennsylvania. I think it would be better at this point for me to print directions from the original Google Map, and also record them so I can listen as I drive that complex route. Either that, or I'm going to have to shape a route on Garmin with about 60 waypoints. I will do that as soon as my eye stops twitching, lol.
@MototasticAdventures
@MototasticAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
It's trying to get you from where you are, to the first waypoint. Once you get from your current location, to the first waypoint you plotted in VA, it'll follow the route you plotted to Pennsylvania.

If you want to see the turn by turn in your device, you can go to "saved trips". Select the trip. Tap the wrench on the top, left corner. Scroll down to "view turns". You can see the turn by turn from the plotted route, here.

Hi. You want to create a route from your tracks. When you export from Google Maps to Basecamp, it transfers as tracks. If you don't have the map downloaded onto your pc, you'll need to plug in your Garmin. Basecamp will use the maps loaded in your Garmin to apply the tracks to the map (getting rid of the straight line in Basecamp). Once you have the tracks imported into Basecamp (it's grey on mine), you need to hover over a portion of the track (in Basecamp). Right click, and convert your tracks to route. It'll take a minute while it processes this. When the route is calculated, it'll turn from grey to the color you chose for your tracks. Clear as mud? LOL. Try this, and see if it helps. 1. plug your Garmin device into your computer 2. export your route from your mapping software, to a file on your computer. 3. Open Basecamp. Import the file you just downloaded. Even though it was a route in your original mapping software, it's now converted to a track when it imported to Basecamp. 4. Because your Garmin device is plugged in, your tracks should be the shape of the route you want. It needs the maps stored into the Garmin device to make sense of the tracks. 5. Right click on the tracks in Basecamp. There will be an option to convert tracks to route. Choose this. It'll take a minute to convert. 6. Now drag the newly created route from "My Collection" to the device. Once it's downloaded, unplug the garmin from the computer. It should shut down when disconnected. 7. Turn Garmin device back on. It'll pop up saying, "New routes found. Import to trip planner?" Hope this helps some :)

Sorry, I haven't worked with that device before. If you're in Basecamp, you'll get the straight line if Basecamp can't find the map. Make sure the map is downloaded on you computer. With a dash or motorcycle Garmin, you can plug it into the USB on your computer. Basecamp will find the maps in the Garmin device, if the maps aren't on the computer. Do you still get the straight line with your device plugged into the USB? If so, the device doesn't have a map downloaded to it that Basecamp can reference. If your device does have the map (of your country) downloaded, and you're still getting the line, try right clicking on the line and choose the 'create route' option.

Yikes. You are literally holding the proper solution in your hands. No workaround required. You are correct that the Garmin Global Map is not “routable”. It is just a placeholder so that when you download and install Garmin’s free Basecamp software to your PC, you’ll have a map to look at when you open the Basecamp app! They give you the software for free to entice you to buy their maps. But you already have the Garmin maps on your device! You just need to copy the maps from your device onto your PC and install them through the menu bar: Maps ==> Install Maps. Then you should be using Basecamp to create routes and tracks instead of Google My Maps. Really, all you are doing is using Basecamp as a file manager to move your Google My Map created GPX file to your device. Your route could still show up as a straight line on your device if you don’t have the routable function turned on in the device. If you didn’t get the Garmin maps when you purchased your Garmin device, don’t fret or badmouth Garmin, there are lots of great street and topo routable maps available for free to download online. I’d highly recommend spending time watching the Basecamp content created by EZ Moto Tim and Hiking Guy to get a thorough understanding of how Basecamp works.

I find Google My Maps more intuitive and user friendly than Basecamp. Thus my preference for transferring from Google My Maps. But, if you're good using Basecamp to create your routes, cool. More than one way to peel a potato, for sure.

Base Camp is not user friendly, nor is it intuitive. It is ancient software. They do update it, but the bones of the program are terrible. BUT IF YOU GO WHERE CELL SERVICE IS BAD, there is really no other WORKABLE choice than Garmin products. You can work things out on a garmin GPS and shape the route, but at the end of the day the view lacks detail and will not include surface streets so you are forced to use a full size computer, with mouse, and generate an accurate route that has waypoints on the road, in the direction of travel, not the southbound freeway lane if you are going north, not off the road 20 feet into someone's driveway - all of those things will halt a ride. It is not for everyone, but if you demand accurate mapping, for a motorcycle trip etc - you have to invest the time to really learn Basecamp or something that works for you. If you don't invest the time, Basecamp will never work for you because it is so non-intuitive. But if you truly learn its features and terrible interface, you can make music with it just like a maestro with a crappy violin.
