Just got a 945 from Garmin as a replacement for my Fenix 5x because of a contact rash from the core unit. I'm looking forward to getting to know my new 945 even though it isn't as pretty at my Fenix was.

@@DesFit The helmet hanging on the light is a nice touch! Garmin certainly didn't invest anything into the 945 looks. Even with the 645 they have that nice silver bezel like the VA3. I'm unclear how much anyone would use all of these metrics but they certainly are all there with the 945.

Thanks! Ive always wanted to do something with old helmets. Power meter data and multi sport modes are the big reasons why one would want a 945 (or even 935) over the lower models. But I have to say that ClimbPro has been a nice feature that I’ve come to really like on the 945 as well as the new Edge units.

something i think is REALLY cool about this watch is that in garmin connect, it can give you an estimate of your wattage during cycling workouts or whatever. i'm not entirely sure how accurate it is but given garmin does a good job of estimating those kinds of things, i'd imagine it's not terribly inaccurate

Really depends on what type of training you are going to do. If you run and swim and play golf the 945 is the one

I was wondering, I am thinking of a Garmin to get a more holistic look and information in regards to my running and general health. I have the Fitbit Ionic, but this looks a little bit more then I need. Do you think the 245 is good for the advanced metrics towards training and when to “take an easy.” Thanks if you have the time to respond.

Thanks! The 245 provides quite a bit already in terms of feedback when it comes to Training Status, Training Load, and Recovery time where as the 945 has features more aimed at triathletes and people who want to squeak out that upper limit of performance.

I hope to see a firmware update for the Fenix 5 plus as well. I understand there will be some features that wont convert (eg. Pulse Ox) due to hardware limitations, but it feels a bit weird to pay $800 for a watch that is advertised as a high-end flagship line only to see newer features role out on cheaper watches less than a year later.

Gasp! The forerunner watches track more than just running and have smart watch features? I literally skipped even looking at them before buying a watch because I thought they were only for avid runners and other sports and smart watch features weren't there. :( dang it! Lol I still love the watch I got but 2 weeks battery life is insane :O

My favorite at this point in time is the 945 in regards to features, but being someone that does a lot of activities like mountain biking and rock climbing, I also use a fenix mainly for durability.

Needs to be paired to your phone to function since the watch itself does not have cellular capabilities.

I’m going all in with Garmin. The 945 and the Edge 530 or the 645 and the Edge 830. What 2 would you get if your sports are cycling and gym workouts? I’ll be using the Polar H7 strap for monitoring HR during training

Shouldn’t matter - all good choices. 945 is more capable due to multi sport modes (which it doesn’t sound like you may need) and 830 uses a touchscreen which is nice, but can be challenging with gloves on.

Hi! Awesome channel! I have one request, while you are trying out the new 245 and 945 music, would you mind having a quick look in the connectivity issue that existed in the vivoactive 3 music and 645 music? Where people were having music being cut off if the bluetooth adapter for their wireless earphones is on the opposite side to which which wrist they wear their watches on. Thanks a lot!

Upgraded my 645 Music to new 5.0 firmware and cut offs almost disappeared with AirPods. They appears very rarely. With vivoactive cut offs was like a hell, but I think because of budget hardware 😒

The fenix line up is going to be more durable but at the present moment the 945 has a few more features. Kind of depends on what you are looking for.

From what I understand Training Load Focus as well as Heat and Altitude Acclimation will not be backported to the fenix 5 Plus series and earlier.

@@DesFit I could see that being the case. I contacted the support team and from what they said, that based on historical actions by garmin, he expected that provided the device has the capabilities and performance that they would more than likely support the new OS. But who knows.

Wow this one looks like a winner Des. Looking forward to your full review. Curious... does it use barometric pressure sensor to track altitude, or GPS data? AFIAK all wrist-watch altimeters use barometric pressure to measure altitude. I have found GPS altitude to be more accurate and predictable. It leaves me wondering why GPS watches can't do both... GPS altitude and/or barometric pressure sensed altitude?? Your review of the Amazfit stratos was spot on, I love this watch!!... great work thanks

it uses DEM. ie the inbuilt map data has pre-loaded elevation data from satellite models (google SRTM) but i don't know if this is used exclusively, so i would imagine some degree of gps and baro are used at time.

Thanks! If you would like to pair to power meters then the 945 provide that functionality, but if you would prefer physical buttons, then you could even go for the 245.

Nope, as soon as your watch connects to the internet, the playlist is gone + Spotify cannot be used offline forever.

Dez, is the new gorillas glass on the 945 as tough as the sapphire glass? The marketing guys tell me the corning glass is just as strong as sapphire? Have you found the 945 screen to be as hard as the sapphire glass? thanks.

I would find it hard to say that gorilla glass would be as tough as sapphire, but I used the 945 as my primary watch for about 4 months and even with a few crashes on the mtn bike, I did not experience any scratches.

Hey Des I’m just wondering with the 945, when you go for a run or ride is the distance is exact same when you transfer it onto Strava, because let’s say I want to get a 5k badge on Strava and only want to do excactly 5 kilometres I don’t want it to be 4.98 or 4.91 or something like that. When a workout syncs over from a Garmin device it should honor the actual distance collected on the watch. There is also the Correct Distance feature in Strava (on desktop browser) where you can base the distance off of Strava’s base maps if for some reason you think it’s off from the watch. You also have the option of switching back to the distance collected on the watch by reverting it.

The other important thing to consider is that there is basically now a year approximately difference between the last Fenix and this particular Forerunner. Whenever the next Fenix etc. is available I would expect the more generic features to also be carried back over but that's just based on what they've done in the past.

Fenix's are basically designed with more the Outdoor person in mind rather than the typical runner etc. So...Durability and ruggedness in the Fenix Line. Lightweight and comfort being the focus for general / serious runners > triathletes

Hello, I have bought the Fenix 5x plus, but I want to know if this Forerunner 945 is a good alternative? Bedore I bought the Fenix, I did have the 935 and I liked it very well. It was lightweight en very comfortable to carry. Now with the Fenix 5x plus, I have to look carefully what I do with because I don’t want to scratch it. Do you think I would like the 945 more? 945 is the 935 on the outside with a stronger screen but not as strong as sapphire so given you have the 35 and Fenix you should know the answer

DP Nexus Yes, the screen (sapphire glass) is so much better on the Fenix 5x plus, but I think the 945 is overall the same watch, only made with cheaper materials. And with scratched I mean, the metal case gets scratched a lott and not the screen.

hiya! great vid! how does the screen compare to fenix 5plus? I understand they prioritise AlwaysOnDisplay and battery life.. but iit might be just my age, but the colour displays they do are hard to read still without backlight or a bit of wrist jiggling :-)

amazing videos sir ... I just got the 945 and took it for on a treadmill with the apple watch 5. Comparing the heart rate between the apple watch and a forerunner 945 on a treadmill walk, it seems that 945 is way off. The 945 shows a heart rate if 196 whereas the apple watch shows 102. Should I be doing something to calibrate it? I just got the watch yesterday and was really hoping to keep it as the data metrics is amazing on a Garmin. Do you have any recommendations on fixing this? resetting the sensors has made it better but I still do get a spike in heart rate for the first 5 mins of the exercise.

Ok, so I got my 945, and for some reason, the maps are not tremendously accurate. I actually got better tracks from my Apple Watch Series 6. Is this common? Or is there something I can adjust? Same route, but the tracks just seem to be way more accurate on the series 6 for some reason. Help?

If you need a more durable watch, I'd go for the fenix 5. Otherwise, the 945 is more current and has more features.

So, I have a Fenix 5X plus that I have owned since last June and wondering if this 945 is worth upgrading to for the new features. If Garmin was planning on releasing a new Fenix 6 in the 3-6 months I think I would wait as I imagine they will put a LTE chip in the next Fenix in all likelihood. Anyway, great review and wondering what your thoughts on all of this are. Thanks.

You already have maps, music, and PulseOX, so you’re good to go there. I do quite ClimbPro if you’re a cyclist, trail runner, or mountaineer. Training load focus is interesting, but not necessarily mandatory. Same thing could go for heat and altitude acclimation as I think they are cool features, but I’ve lived without them until now. But you should have received a firmware update with Incident detection and Get Assistance so you’ve got that going for you.

Thanks for quick reply. I did not know about update on Fenix for Safety and Incident detection. Just found it and tested the safety feature and it works great. Will have to think about whether those other few features are worth it. I am a pretty serious cyclist, gym rat and golfer and keep very active so always looking to get an "edge" on my fitness. @@DesFit

There was a ride that I just did that was “not flat” ;) the other day and the ClimbPro feature helped me conserve energy as it showed me what was coming. Mandatory? No. Nice to have? Absolutely. You may want to consider just getting one of the Edge 530s and sticking with your F5XPlus,

Finally, Garmin finally closing the loop. Out for your run, listening to your favourite music, both ears blocked with bluetooth headphones. Have your loved one being instantly notified when you are run over whilst you are totally unaware of your surroundings and pay for the hospital invoice right from your brand new watch. What can be better? For me, I am staying with my square faced 920XT and its sturdy charging mechanism. Quite glad that Garmin is no longer tempting me to invest in these expensive 'upgrades'.

Eh... the headphones, hospital and lack of awareness is down to you since it comes down to common sense and a reliance on your other senses. FWIW you can also buy bone conduction headphones that don't block your ears and therefore can still hear traffic etc. I personally like AfterShockz but lots of brands offer this technology option in a variety of interesting ways (I've even seen it combined into sunglasses). @@jamesgreenwood4412 Not at all, James. No need to apologise for 'dismantling my argument'. Having just returned from my afternoon run, I observed a fellow runner with what seemed to be a cochlear implant, bluetooth connected to his running watch. Staggering from side, he was busy answering incoming calls and remotely controlling the volume, jabbering loudly into what I assume to be a bluetooth microphone. Anyway, it is enthusiasts like these for which Garmin is now producing its latest range of 'smart'watches.

Waste of MONEY...for useless additional features. Music, payments and other BS don't do much for a competitive athelete.

Well I need music cuz I dont have any forests around me. Maybe get a Polar Vantage V, it does not have music.

Garmin's always been like that, though. Everything and the kitchen sink. It's one reason I've generally preferred Suunto (and have many more videos featuring watches of theirs). But, it works well in the market. If you already pay a lot, at least you get everything you could get. For better and worse
