I needed to hear that. I have a Forerunner 235, sold my Fenix 3HR and was going to buy the 945. I run marathons and am training for ultras, but if I'm honest, my Forerunner 235 is perfect for me. Sometimes I tend to get caught up in the gear and not actually doing the hobby. I think I feel like I've accomplished something if I bought the watch or shoes or whatever. There's also a little bit of vanity in there; "look at my watch I'm a runner".

True that - problem with 235 is that you can't have a native map nor long battery life - only drawback. Well, maybe barometer if you want that elevation data.

I view “toys” as part of my reward for training and racing hard. However, I think most of the critics of this video is missing the point. These watch manufacturers are taking us for a ride. They figure if we can afford 5k bike, what’s $100 or $200 more ? New tech doesn’t mean more expensive, the latest iPhone 11 is a perfect example of that

I did my first 70.3 and RAGBRAI with a Garmin forerunner 235. It worked well. Was concerned about battery life for sure as I upped distances, and didn’t have a swim function, but I took on triathlon after getting it. It’s an excellent runners watch. It was a great first GPS watch and can still be viable to many. I asked for the 945 for Christmas and I absolutely love it. The battery life and functions are a tremendous upgrade. Im training for a full Ironman but also very active in other sports and activities. While not everyone needs a 945, I think it’s an excellent purchase if you’re doing more races and want to build more situational awareness on your performance than any other watch. Good video. I can’t say I agree with all of it, but you bring up a lot of good points that’ll help people make a decision. I wish any viewer watching this good luck in their purchase and training. I personally love my 945 and would recommend it to just about anyone if it’s within your budget.

Thanks for taking the time to put together this review - I did enjoy it very much, particularly stating that a new watch isn't going to make you faster; more and better training will. I own the 945 and I have a couple of issues with this video: 1. The 945 communicates with the heart rate straps via ANT +, not Bluetooth. 2. The 945 doesn't have a touch screen 3. During specific sports, the 945 _mostly_ uses a black and white screen that is highly visible in daylight. One exception is when it is in mapping mode, where the display really needs to take advantage of colour. By the way, that ability to hold and render maps is one of the reasons why the 945 is more expensive (along with the SpO2 sensor), so if you don't need mapping and aren't interested in having an additional early indicator of over training (heart rate being another good indicator), then I agree 100% that this watch isn't for you. 4. You can buy the 945 without the two heart rate straps for $150 less at REI, bringing the price down to $600. I chose this option because I already had the straps from the 910 I bought a few years ago. Still expensive, but it's important to clarify that you . don't have to buy the straps to get a 945. 5. Battery life isn't just critical for the sports you wish to use the watch to train for: the 945 is small enough that I now wear it as my daily watch and use it to track all kinds of things, including alerting me for key messages from my team at work (slack) and my family (text messaging). In the case of the 945, it has better battery life in GPS mode: 36 hours vs. 25 hours for the 935, which translates to over a week of training and daily use for me, training 8-15 hours per week. One thing that I would happily pay a premium for all by itself is the incident reporting. I race cross-country triathlons (XTerra is the best known brand: regular tri swim, mountain bike and trail run), so for training, I often go for long rides or runs alone in the forest, so having this feature is very reassuring for my wife. It works, too: I fell off my bike recently and it started to go off. Since I wasn't hurt, I was able to disable it before it reported in. I'm honestly not sure if the 935 had all the necessary accelerometers inside to support this function, so it may be only software from the 935 to the 945, if you're thinking that the price of the watch should be based on its cost rather than its value. There are two things that frustrate me about the watch. One is the limited number of BT headsets that work with it. None of the three I have work with it, and I am really struggling to justify buying another headset just to have it be compatible with my watch. The other is Garmin Pay: it's unsupported in Canada, so at the moment, useless to me. And yes, I'm sure I paid a premium for NFC capability built into the watch.

Well said! Finally! I had the F935, but sent it back as I did not feel the added value for additional +$400 (no straps) against my old TomTom Multisport. I also noticed it drew my attention to numbers and measurements, checking my watch more frequently stealing the joy of the running/activity. Felt a bit like a robot 🤖. Maybe next year when the price drops to a reasonable level. If that.

Justin you are on point 100%. I used my Garmin 920xt until it stopped giving elevation on the runs. So I sold it and upgraded to the 935. I love the features and the optical heart rate on the wrist but...... the elevation doesn't work anymore. I've heard that the pool chlorine messes up the barometer. Either way I am not upgrading to another watch unless my 935 dies or goes missing. I have to have way more features than those rumored to upgrade

That's super frustrating. You've probably seen it, but just in case, here's a Slowtwitch thread I read about that barometer issue... Seems like *maybe* a soak in soapy water, but otherwise yeah, seems to be a pretty typical known issue, which I think is kinda BS. I remember when I got my Ambit I messaged Suunto asking if I was clear to use in a chlorinated pool, and they said "Yeah as long as you rinse it afterwards." And it's like... Okay so you're implying that if you don't rinse it that's bad... but USING it in the pool constantly is somehow fine? Mine still works, but it seems like a lot of these brands are just barely holding up their end of the expectation. I'm totally killing any future sponsorships here 😅😂 forum.slowtwitch.com/forum/Slowtwitch_Forums_C1/Triathlon_Forum_F1/Elevation_all_whacked_on_Garmin_935_P6632275/

Hi. Thanks a lot fot your video. I have been running with Polar M400 since 2016. Before 2016 I used some no GPS watches (heart rate monitors). The funny thing is, that normally with all my previous hobbies, I used to start with buying a lot of so called professional stuff, then... after months, sometimes year or two I was quitting. With running it's different. It's more than eight years so far. And I'm still enjoying it so much. And of course the equipment does matter. Like a good head light when running at night in the mountain forest. But still... It's only the equipment. It's good to collect different data, but it's a little bit like with our thousands of digital photos. Who is going to watch them and when? Time, distance, heart rate (especially at the beginning). With my M400 I miss precise altimeter only (do I really need?). That's why I'm watching all those movies. The other features...Well, for sure they don't make us better runners. They don't motivate us to go out. They don't give us the joy we are searching for while running, hiking, swimming or whatever. And of course they are still ok, it's good to have them, but they don't really matter.

Maybe this is just me, being new to the whole exercising with a tracker, but as far as I can tell I never found any video that tells you how to interpret garmin connect data and how to make an effort to improve the personal performance. Maybe you could pick up that topic once, and say what the key parameters are and how to effectively track and plan progress? It seems to be a topic that doesnt get much attention on the internet. greez hudi

I think one of the biggest concerns is that they update software in a way that could be done for the older models too. For example, Forerunning 945 has improved training load, which they could just implement in basically any of the previous watches.

Totally agree on cost creep, BUT the batteries are bigger now and bigger batteries cost more. Optical HR is now included in the watch, whereas your HR monitor used to be a separate device. Add in payment tech and now music over bluetooth and I get all the additional costs. Heck, not even just the hardware cost, but the licenses they have to obtain for the tech itself. They are cramming more and more into a single item, and I've accepted that it's going to drive the cost up. I wish it wasn't double the price, but it IS doing double the things older watches did. Granted, to your point, none of this will make me faster and the money might be better spent elsewhere, but coming from a 920, the nirvana of (1) not needing a separate HRM, (2) not needing to bring my phone or my wallet/credit card with me and (3) having a watch that WILL last me a full IM are all things I'm willing to pay for. PS would love a LCD-only option on these watches. I agree touchscreens are crap. Reduced viewing angles, harder to read in sunlight & underwater, probably worse battery life, and impossible to use with sweaty fingers. Buttons for life!

Love the video and agree that the prices are getting crazy and the majority of people only use (or understand or in fact know about) a fraction of the features. As for the 945, I actually got it (coming from the "old" Polar V800) when it came out. Some of those advanced features are awesome: Maps, Climb-Pro, music and garmin pay are all awesome and the connectIQ platform opens a whole new level of possibilities (I'm a diabetic and see/track by blood sugar level on the watch - no other platform can do that). Where is is lacking are some of the day-to-day bread and butter training basics. E.g.: The GPS is worse than that of the much older Polar watch or there's no quick way (that i know of) to set up a simple A/B interval *during* a workout. Everything needs to be pre-planned and is unchangeable after you start.

I could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure the Ambit 3 still has some of the best accuracy of recent watches. It might have to do with the (uncomfortable and ugly) GPS hump, but it sure is functional.

I generally agree. Although my Suunto Traverse Alpha GPS accuracy was much much worse than new Garmin Instinct Solar (which I returned as not happy from other functionalities and overall material quality). Also there are still cheaper models which offer a lot like Forerunner 55, mentioned Instinct etc. I think main difference is target group and used materials eg. Plastic watches with plastic glass up to DLC or expensive titan with more complex and durable composite and sapphire crystal glass. And TBH it’s good to have such a wide choice. More customers find something they like and can afford. I’d be happy to see high end watches added to offer witch are stripped from some functions and therefore a bit cheaper. Why pay for example for medicore optical HR sensor In FR945 if someone plan to use more accurate external strap sensor instead etc.

Great points. I went and got a Suunto 9. I'm a slow ultrarunner so I do like the extra battery life. Last weekend I did a 50K in just under 8 hours and the battery was still at 65% (with the highest GPS accuracy setting). I also like the wrist band better than the Ambit 3, and the fact that I can see so much information on the face without changing the screen. But you're right - it's overkill. I think a chest strap is much more accurate, plus in the winter I prefer to wear my watch over long sleeves which doesn't work with a wrist HRM.
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 5 жыл бұрын
I think you're totally right. And hey, those features ARE good things. When I did my doubles, I had to bring a little USB battery bank, because my Ambit wouldn't last the 12-13 hrs. A 9 would have, and that would have been more convenient for sure. And no pretending the Ambit isn't huge on my already small wrists, lol. And yeah, the optical is pretty accurate for general efforts, but it's slow to respond to fast changes, so if you're doing interval work and such, not ideal. Plus I kinda figure most of us on the tri side already have straps for the bike anyway. But yeah, the 9 seems really nice, I'm just getting frustrated with them acting like, imo normal improvements, are worth acting like it's this $700 super watch. :( Great job on the 50! :D

You are 100% right... I have garmin vivoactive 3 and I am looking to buy new watch for over month now and it is exactly as you said in your video. There is simply no reason for me to buy one... Only reason I want one is because my vivoactive is bit old and batery will last only aprox 3.5 to 4hrs in GPS mode which is bit short for my upcoming marathon.. I do have budget around 500 USD for which currently I can have FR945, FR745 and lower... Fenix 6 even 6pro if streched a bit, Some mid to high end polar or suntoo... But first I am trapped in Garmin ecosystem (I do have edge 530 and HRM strap) and second I simply can not decide which watch would I rather have... None of them offer anything usefull to me for the money over my existing vivoactive 3 and especially for the price...If batery on that dam thing would be changeable I wouldn't wan't another watch. There simply is no reason for it.

I'm with you....what are your use cases...been running for 6 years, after decades of cycling...first bought the garmin 210, then garmin 620...touch screen did stink...then garmin 230, and it was great..gave me just what I needed...then 630, because I did my first ultra and needed 6hrs+ of run time...630 was great...but then did a crazy R2R2R and needed a super long run time and put down $399 for the 935 on sale to get the battery life...and I do have power meters I connect it to..so that's awesome..I too would love to get music on the watch..spotfiy specifically...but prices on the 945 are crazy...wait a year and it will come down...I'm not paying that much..I'll keep using my 935 and my ipod shuffle....oh wait, the shuffle is discontinued as well

Agree totally. Triathlon participation has been going down for a several years, and rising costs is a big part of the reason. As for watches, I have a Garmin Vivoactive 3 HR. I have had no issues with the HR functions. Whenever I have compared it to other HRM types, it has been within 1-2 beats. My biggest gripe is with the touch screen. In the shower, and sometimes in the pool, the water will change things on the watch.
@JustinDoesTriathlon
@JustinDoesTriathlon 5 жыл бұрын
Yep! The sport is expensive enough with the true requirements, and then people make videos and write articles saying you "need" these watches, and people just get super turned off. I personally know a few people who are all rocking $350+ watches for their 30 min runs. And hey, if you've got the money, I guess there's no reason not to, but I think it can be intimidating to people who can't spend the money (when you really don't need to.) And that's ridiculous about the touch screen in water. I get unreasonably annoyed at that; it's a problem that should never exist.

Agree with most of what you said. But, the new Garmin devices have pretty cool recovery/ stress/ body battery features that are kinda useful. Combine that (waring the watch all day) with your tri needs (multisport) than you are stuck with a 945.

I used to track my trainings with a Garmin Vivosmart HR+ and got myself last week ago the Garmin FR 935 TRI, wich puts a lot more useful data out. I´m totally happy with it and it helps me a lot more in my trainings than the "cheap" HR+ !

4:15... 100% agree about why I need two HR straps, one for running, one for swimming ? The 935’s swim strap only stays vaguely in place if it’s under a wet suit, if you’re just wearing trunks it slides down regardless of how tight it’s fit. The 945 essentially only adds some colour to the 935, for a lot of extra money. Garmin, like other makers, are upp’ing their prices because they’re chasing the price point of high-end smart-watches by the likes of Apple. That’s their go-to. Not a rant, cogent logic. Nice video.

I have a Garmin 45. And run 4 times a week. I only need distance, pace, elapsed time and sync to Strava. The Garmin 45 does this and I really can’t justify spending £520 on buying a new watch. Even with January sales do I really need a different watch? No 99% of the time I run with an iPhone in my pocket or camelback, so I can use that for maps and card payments if I ever needed to.

Great video! You've said what needed to be said. I've had my fair (guilty) share, but so far as value for money goes, I've never come across any GPS multi sport watches that can better Amazfit Stratos -- its the watch that I completed my 100K 5000m+ EG trail race in 29hr, with 8% battery to spare!

Driving me crazy too. I have a 35 and a 230, I wear the 35 all the time and the 230 with a strap also when I run. After a couple of years like that, the _only_ things I miss in the 35 would be (1) the 2-minute recovery heart rate thing that the 230 does (2) the ability to set a training distance and have it report that time. I like the square form factor, I like the 4-button interface and don't need 5, I like the LCD and don't need color. Also (3) the 35 can't show average heart rate during the run as a data field. Very very minor things and only in the software for running. Adding the 2-minute recovery, a setting for training distance, and a new data field would be trivial. The 235 always seemed like the old elevate sensor was too big a bump. So I've been hopeful that I would either get enough more features in a 45, or a 245 would just "do it all". Music _would_ be cool - now I carry either a cell phone or an mp3 player in a pouch... Maps would be GREAT on the times I'm off trail in the Adirondacks btw. But the 245 with music is supposed to be priced at something like 350!!! And the 45 has gone in a yucky direction - round and color. I _like_ the small square form for an everyday all day all night heart rate tracker. I would have been happy enough with a 245 that just basically added the new elevate sensor to the 235; music would be great, and price it less than 250. I would have bought a 45 if it just added a few more basic running data things that I care about. Maybe I will just live with the 35 - after all, I can do a manual lap at the training distance when the alert goes off, and I can figure the recovery rate in garmin connect later. There is no way for a 35 to show the average heart rate for the run as a data field, but, well, I sort of know how hard I'm pushing from time and current heart rate. I'm REALLY having trouble with the pricing though! Maybe if I wait a few months the 245 will come down.

Couldn't have said it any better. Your use cases are definitely different than mine, but still, exact same frustrations. I think broadly, Garmin (and Suunto) have seen the success of Apple and rise of smartwatches and are pushing that direction, and then the true sports market is being marginalized. They're becoming "fitness trackers" and "activity monitors" but the real sports features are getting de-prioritized. Garmin's stock proves why it's a good direction for them as a company, but we're left with these overpriced watches that don't seem worth it. Hell, if I could get a FR45 with running metrics and music for $200, I'd be the first to buy it. That would be amazing. We should have LOTS of things like that. The FR10 was a nice little watch and it came out nearly 7 years ago!

Agree 100% with you. I'm a techno geek, but I tend to go back to my old Garmin VivoActive with a cheap chest strap for my runs. I agree. They are way over priced and due for some serious competition. The most frustrating thing is the screen. It looks crummy for the price. Why can the needles on the fake watch faces not even be straight instead of pixelated like on a 1980s Casio. And the price is a rip off. If Amazfit comes out with an NFC chip payment system then I would buy that.

I quite often use the track navigation, but the Fenix 1 could very well do that, even with basic maps. I payed 280€ for it 6 years ago. Unfortunately it died after 3 years. Now I have a Fenix 3 since 3 years and the only thing I am missing are maps, but I don't need navigation like in a car, no music, no payment, no optical heartrate, stress, sleep.... I would only upgrade, if I can do that for max. 350€!

agree!! touchscreens, maps, colored screens, etc. won't make you go fast. only training will. i am using a fenix3 for the last 3-4 years and cannot find any other sport watch to replace it and i remember that each time i take out my wetsuit. it's a watch you can put before the race/training and forget about anything (but pressing the button at transitions) until the end of the race. forget about unexpected chrono stop or waiting until the watch responds. it's still reliable, and that's what you need on a race. you are right!! this is just a marketing strategy to take the prices up!!! are not real upgrades nor necessary upgrades

I pre-ordered a 945 and will eBay my not-too-old 935. Why? Music, maps, and Garmin Pay. IMHO those three features justify the $300 net I'll have to spend, and the other goodies are a nice bonus. It's all a matter of framing. If I look at the expense as the equivalent of two pairs of shoes, it doesn't seem like such a splurge. 😜

I love 310xt. Probably i would be using this watch still today , problem was that battery was completely dead after 6 years of using. Garmin did not offer me battery replacement, they gave me an offer to replace whole watch with a cost similar to new Garmin 235. And this is only why decided to buy new one. Currently using Suunto 9 (price recently went down) which pretty old fashion style sport watch with added some "fresh/smartwach but not dominating modes. And i love S9 for this concept. Agree with you, as an amateur runner, I just used for running 3 times a week within 15-20 km per week in total, so Garmin vivoactive 3 that I've been using for the last 9 months just enough, no need for upgrade, just using it for running and no more. I also don't care about advanced metrics such as ground contact time and vertical oscillation which are only there in forerunner or fenix series. Just buy sportwatch that you need, not what you want. Be a wise buyer.

I expected this watch to come out about a year ago as the 935 plus for a $200 premium on the 935. however as a successor to the watch you can't add that much to the RRP. It's expected that when you replace a watch you update the features, but the price stays the same. Your new model can't be worse value than your older model. Thats called a different watch category, not an updated model.

All i really need: 1) the way to count how many laps and within what time i'm doing in the pool (I have difficult time to count laps and concentrate on drills and technic at the same time). 2) HR while I'm running and swimming in order to understand in what "ZONE" i'm at. I'd love to stop running with the phone and have music on the wrist, but i'm not willing to spend more than $200-$300 on the watch. will be very appreciated if someone can recommend an option to do that other than Garmin vívoactive 3 Music i'm leaning to
