Garmin G5 & GI 275 Comparison

After posting a video showing the features of the Garmin GI 275 MFD I have had several questions asking if I prefer it over the G5's. If you're trying to decide between them this video may help. I also highly recommend the video by KZfaqr quinnjim who has more of a side-by-side comparison.

Good stuff! I'm starting from scratch, so I'll probably go with the newer 275's. I think either unit is a solid choice for modern IFR flying.

The GI 275 works well with my “legacy” auto pilot. If you have dual units, you can remove the entire vacuum system, the weight and maintenance. Latest update provides a manual switching between the GPS or the heading bug. Synthetic vision available for precise glide slope visual reference.

I have the 275 as pfd and hsi. In those install modes you cannot access all the pages. I tend to use my iPad more for the mfd and just keep the hsi in hsi mode. I do tend to put the hsi on safe taxi after landing though because it shows other taxing traffic on the taxiways.

Dennis, very nice video. I enjoyed watching it, and I agree with you. If I was starting from scratch, I too would have went with the 275’s. Much more versatile. Well done buddy.

Hey Dennis! I was searching for info on the GI275 and found your channel. We met on a dock down in Roadtown and ended up anchoring in a few bays together before Irma came along. We were both flying 777's at the time. The Tiger looks amazing! Hope you guys are doing well. Cheers.

OMG Paul it’s so good to hear from you! Yup, I traded the Triple for the Tiger and we’re having lots of fun with it. Unfortunately Irma took Sequoia from us, we miss her a lot. Oh well, that’s life.

I put my G5's in last April, 2020, when I had my panel redone. I don't believe the GI 275's were available yet, but, even so, I think I still would have went the G5 route due to cost. There's a lot of functionality with the 275... perhaps too much functionality. Some pilots think more information is better than less. I like to say "useful information is better than more". I do like your set up, though. What I really need is a robust digital engine monitor. :-)

I did my panel around the same time as you. I remembered 275's were just out, but I went with the G5's. I saw an installation in another plane and I didn't like it. Panel looked like no upgrade at all when turned off, and kind of when turned on. So many graphics stacked into a small round screen. Too much clutter. It works on bigger square screens, but not small round ones. And doing an upgrade were the new instruments would still remain round, would seem NO upgrade at all. I really like my G5's, give me all the information I need and for me I think it looks pretty good in a modern panel. Most of us have iPads in the cockpit anyways.

Thank You for the great info. Some how both of them don't convince me, I find them the too small. But, I'm leaning more towards the GTX Tough. It just price and the installation that break our thin wallets.

Thx for making this. I just watched a similar video earlier this week. The 275 definitely looks nicer. The round screen better utilizes the compass rose and actually seems to show more usable pixels. My internal question would be whether it's worth the xtra cost of purchase/labor for a dual configuration.

You have to weigh cost versus functionality. I have dual G5's and they do a great job. I'm not one to have one instrument that performs a hundred different functions. But that's just me.

What about the flight director bars? What are they getting the info from? What autopilot?

Hi Carl. It’s a tough choice, but the first question is if you’re planning on a GFC 500 or keeping your current autopilot. The 275 seems to be much more compatible with other manufacturers autopilots. Second question is do you like the original look of your panel? Obviously the 275 wins on that one. Finally, is cost the deciding factor? Getting bids from a Garmin dealer will help there. I haven’t flown the 275 ADI/HSI yet, but based on my observations of the MFD I would lean in that direction. Best of luck, I would love to see pictures when you finish.

I already have a G5 HSI, but I want to add a 275 AI, do the G5 and 275 talk to each other? Or would I be better off getting a second G5?

Hi Travis, that’s a very good question. I don’t know the answer from the technical side, it would probably be best to speak to Garmin. There may be a legal issue as well, it depends on how the STC is written. For me the biggest issue is user interface. The menu systems are different, in fact the selection knobs are on opposite sides. I recommend staying with the G5 or replacing your HSI with a GI275. I really do not think you would be happy with a mixed pair, even if it’s technically possible. Best to stick with the G5 IMHO.

It’s a JPI EDM-830. Works great, I highly recommend it.

Yes, it’s a GFC 500 which does a provide flight director.

G5s are much less expensive.

You are absolutely correct. I checked this morning on the Garmin website, the GI275 ADI is $3995 and the G5 $2595. That’s quite a difference! I don’t know if the 275 requires the GAD29 and GAD13, if not that might offset a little. Thanks for commenting, I’m surprised it’s that much.
