Love the video. Got a random question though. :) Is the radio call placard a typo, or was it intentionally made as "Gulfstream American"? :)
@dcheever77711 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It’s about time I put up a new video but it’s been too darn hot to fly this summer. Nope, that’s not a typo. The manufacturer on my airworthiness certificate actually is Gulfstream American. It changed over the years, then in 1979 they were making lots of money from the G-III’s and dropped the AA5 line. Then in 1991 American General took the line, nowadays it’s Tiger Aircraft. Quite a history. But no, I don’t call ATC as Gulfstream. 😉

Does the G5 HSI connect to the nav radio for ils, vor, and loc approaches? As in not the GPS. My flying club has a 172 that has a Garmin 175 navigator. It doesn't have an obs option to switch the cdi from GPS to vloc because the navigator only gives GPS information. It doesn't have integrated comms or nav. We're in the market to get a second G5 as the HSI but I'm worried that we'll only be able to read GPS data on it and won't be able to connect it to the nav frequencies on our radio stack.
@dcheever777 Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. I looked through the G5 installation manual and do not see a way to connect two different navigation units (i.e. the 175 and a VOR/LOC receiver). The best thing would be ask your Garmin dealer if there is a work around. With the new GPS only units I wouldn’t thing you are the first one to encounter this. Sorry I not more helpful.

I already have a G5 HSI, but I want to add a 275 AI, do the G5 and 275 talk to each other? Or would I be better off getting a second G5?
@dcheever777 Жыл бұрын
Hi Travis, that’s a very good question. I don’t know the answer from the technical side, it would probably be best to speak to Garmin. There may be a legal issue as well, it depends on how the STC is written. For me the biggest issue is user interface. The menu systems are different, in fact the selection knobs are on opposite sides. I recommend staying with the G5 or replacing your HSI with a GI275. I really do not think you would be happy with a mixed pair, even if it’s technically possible. Best to stick with the G5 IMHO.

Hi there, Dennis! I'm struggling to have my Terrain Database updated on my GI 275, which is paired to a GTN 750. How did you managed to do so?
@dcheever777 Жыл бұрын
Hello Hiago. I fought with this issue for months after installation of the GI275s. Finally I had the latest firmware update put in ( which is probably not your problem if they are new, but check anyway) and tried a direct connection via the USB dongle. That finally worked. It seems like neither the Wi-Fi connection or pushing from the GTN works for the Terrain Database. Garmin tech support is nice, but they had no idea how to solve it. This was quite sometime ago, perhaps they know more now. Please let me know how you resolve it, I would be very interested to know.
@hiagotb Жыл бұрын
@@dcheever777 thanks for your answer! So, I guess that Garmin still didn't figure how to solve this nowadays... Because just like you, I tried to push the Terrain Data from my GTN and also with the Wi-Fi connection. No success. The main reason must be the size, Terrain Database is too large compared to others. So it demands to upload and update via USB only. I will try to do that later on. I'll let you know if I succeeded or not, thanks again for the help!

Thanks for the video. Funny thing in various videos no one addresses the cost like this even the cost of the item less installation!
@dcheever7772 жыл бұрын
The problem with including the cost is it may (will) change. The best source of the instrument cost would be Garmin's website, I'll include a link and hope it works. Regarding installation, there are so many variables only dealer could give you a true estimate after looking at your plane. In my case the 275 was part of a bigger install job and certainly cost less than had it been a standalone installation. The price has gone up since I installed mine. I hope this will help: www.garmin.com/en-US/p/719027/pn/010-GI275-06

There are two different ways of doing it. Here’s how as described in the G5 Pilots Guide Setting the selected altitude: Use the ALT SEL Knob on the GMC 507 to adjust the selected altitude. What is the GSL to the right display of the MSA?
@dcheever7772 жыл бұрын
It’s height above sea level as determined by the GPS, not barometric. The acronym is for Geometric/Geodetic Sea Level. I put it next to MSA for a quick reference, but didn’t find it useful and have since changed it.

Is it the GI275 showing traffic in the display next to the JPM?
@dcheever7772 жыл бұрын
Yes, the data comes from the GTX-345. In fact that’s the primary reason I installed the 275, to have traffic displayed while using other screens on the GTN-650xi.

Ok, you have the GPS to OBS. Now, you’re VOR/ILS GNC-255 should also feed that G5. As you have it set RMI style, I’ll assume it is so wired. How do you toggle the OBS to that OBS? My understanding is that an option should be available on the PFD display but mine lacks that option. Is there a setting that also needs to be adjusted? I’ve a GNX-375 and GNC-255 tied to my G5. The GNC VOR works fine with its own OBS and as an RMI on the G5, but I can’t toggle thus get no glideslope from it. The GPS works well both OBS and RMI style on the G5 with its own map and OBS on itself.

You are absolutely correct. I checked this morning on the Garmin website, the GI275 ADI is $3995 and the G5 $2595. That’s quite a difference! I don’t know if the 275 requires the GAD29 and GAD13, if not that might offset a little. Thanks for commenting, I’m surprised it’s that much.

@paulhigley99083 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis, great video! I have a single nav with a dedicated CDI, but want to add a Garmin GPS which I’m told can’t share the CDI with the nav. So I’m considering replacing my directional gyro with the GI 275 for GPS approach guidance and DG in one unit.. I’m confused, it seems one configuration is the MFD with an HSI page? But Garmin also sells the unit in an HSI only configuration.. not sure which is the right unit for this scenario. I hope this is clear, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
@dcheever7773 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul. You should definitely talk with a Garmin dealer and get the correct configuration for your needs. Although the MFD does have an HSI display I don’t think it’s certified as a primary instrument. A dealer will steer you to the proper model.

@dcheever7773 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl. It’s a tough choice, but the first question is if you’re planning on a GFC 500 or keeping your current autopilot. The 275 seems to be much more compatible with other manufacturers autopilots. Second question is do you like the original look of your panel? Obviously the 275 wins on that one. Finally, is cost the deciding factor? Getting bids from a Garmin dealer will help there. I haven’t flown the 275 ADI/HSI yet, but based on my observations of the MFD I would lean in that direction. Best of luck, I would love to see pictures when you finish.
