Was torn between the FR45 and the Venu SQ for some time, and it was hard to find a proper comparison between those two. My problem probably is that I only want one device to be both a health tracker as well as a running watch that I'd be happy with. Went for the 45 in the end as I wanted the round form factor (The round Venu was out of budget), slightly longer battery life and thought I could live without the SPO2. Am I missing out on anything else?

The Venu and Venu SQ gathers all the data but so do the normal Apple watches. The cellular model just adds text and phone functionality, the non cellular version still collects distance, speed, etc... Thanks!

Great review. At the end you mention that the altimeter is responsible for other small things, not directly visible on the watch. Which kind of other things then? I'm still thinking if it is better to get a Vivoactive 4s instead of the Venu SQ just due to the altimeter.

Hi Des, great review. I've been rocking Venu for one year now. While I do love it alot for it's accuracy and battery life I believe it's time for an upgrade. It's small for my wrist. Which device can you recommend as an upgrade to Venu, I like to have an amoled display with good battery life, workout choice and hr/steps accuracy? Cheers

@@DesFit Hehe, I never assumed, it is an unreleased watch, I was just not sure, didn't see it clearly. :-D And if it is, I was surprised that you wear it. I love my Instinct, but it is not the usual "daily wear" among people who own a Fenix/Apple watch/etc. So I thought that you are maybe testing something interesting that didn't come up so far. (not necessarily a new feature, or a new feature I missed.). But I guess, there will be a video about it, if that is the case :-)

I love your in-depth reviews. my only minor complaint with this video is the fact that there was no consistency with keeping the sq watch on either the left or right when placing them on the table for comparing app features. Small annoyance, i know. But these small attention to detail things get me sometimes.

Nope, altimeter is always on and doesn’t have an effect on battery life. GPS will start when you start an outdoor activity. Don’t really need to choose as both of them do different things. Thanks!

Great comparison, Des.You never fail to deliver!I have been ultimately unhappy with the Venu, mainly due to the incredibly poor quality of Garmin graphics. Why pair an OLED screen with super-outdated heart rate, body battery, and stress graphics? For that reason alone, consider the SQ a better value. You’re paying for screen technology that Garmin refuses to leverage properly.

@@leiflala Phil did not comment about accuracy. He said the GRAPHICS are not as great as they could be given the OLED screen that users are paying for. He might just have a point- still a great unit but no way worth double the price of the Venu 2 which is about 90% identical.

Im currently looking at getting either a Venu; Venu SQ or the Fitbit Versa 3, but am torn on which one is the best option. Im moving from a Fitbity Blaze and primarily use it for daily health tracking and my primary activities are running, hiking and cycling. What Im unsure of is if the added cost for the Venu is worth it for my use case or if the Venu SQ / Versa 3 may be good enough.

Me too…think I will end up going with the Venu Sq Music edition as I like the fact that it can store music from Spotify off line unlike the versa 3. It’s also currently cheaper than the regular Venu and I’m not too fussed about the lack of AMOLED screen.

Which did you end up getting- do you like it? I bought a FB- loved it and it broke a week later. Sadly they appear to be disposable toys. After I bought it, I visited the online forum- almost all complaints- similar to my experience. It's important to buy it where you can return it and also have warranty so an authorized dealer. The FB ecosystem was great though- when it worked. I'll miss that. Most everything froze up on my phone- stopped syncing, etc. I did every step imaginable including a full re-install, tech support, and still no luck. Considering the Venue SQ or Soros Pace2.

You mention that the gyroscope helps with stroke detection, but you didn't mention how big of a difference you saw. How off is the SQ compared to the Venu 2 for pool swimming? Every other feature that the Venu2 has that costs more isn't worth the price for me, and so I'm struggling to understand just how much I'm going to be sacrificing in my pool tracking if I get the SQ. Thanks for your help! You literally answered EVERY other question with your videos. Helped me narrow my decision down to these 2!

Hi Des, I'm still torn between the two, as someone who is about to give up my Fitbit Versa 2, I really want an accurate and reliable GPS watch with music (and without my phone)! I go running, gym and play soccer (so auto-recognition would be great), and every now and then go swimming! So with that in mind, would you say they are both as accurate as each other on the fitness side? Which would you personally choose?

I had Fitbit CHarge 2 and shifted to Garmin 245 about 2 years back. I like Garmin mainly for tracking runs without carrying mobile and much better interface, free coach assistance, SPO2 , VO2 max, setting targets for improvement

Thanks for covering the altimeter. I've been wanting to buy the SQ but I thought not having an altimeter means not recording ascent which is really important for me since I do uphill biking and running. But is the ascent or elevation gain in the SQ as close as with the Venu?

The altitude data will be based off GPS data which is generally reliable. Another thing to consider is altimeters can sometime be thrown off by changes in weather and where the altimeter is located on the watch.

@@leiflala Hey man, so far enjoying it! Been using it for 2 weeks. Love the "upgrade" from Vivoactive 3 to SQ. Like the UI is a lot smoother and the colors on the display are vibrant. Also, workouts tracking on my run and biking activities are smooth as well! really worth the buy!

You’d get more smartwatch features with the Venu SQ but more sport features with the Pace 2 like open water swimming and multisport modes.

I would have thought that the SQ with more screen real estate would have bigger fonts but instead it is much smaller than the Venu. With my aging eyes, the Venu gets my vote for easier readability.

The Swim 2 has an open water swimming profile plus the ability to pair with a swim-compatible external HR monitor which is not found on the Venu SQ.

In some other review I saw that Swim 2 can track even when I am swimming only with my legs, or some kind of technique exercises, witch don't require hands to move. Of course, I am talking about pool swimming.

Excluding the workout animations is pure daylight robbery given the small price differential between the Sq music edition and the Vivoactive 4. The Garmin logo at the front of the watch is also off putting, imho. Given the state of the world right now, what can we expect in 2021 in terms of fitness trackers and smart watches? Oneplus is rumoured to be releasing a smart watch and fitness tracker, the release of 4100 updated processor for wear os etc. What are your expectations and thoughts moving forward in terms of innovations in this market?

I'd like to see the balance between display technology and battery life be better this year. I would anticipate more in the guided workout realm since it appears that a lot of the world will still be on lockdown for at least the first half of this year.

Does lack of altimeter and gyroscope for venu sq makes it left behind from venu 2/2s?

The lack of altimeter makes it so you won't be able to see altitude gained or lost during an activity but it will still show that information after you save the activity. The main difference between the two will be the display and the Venu 2 having the most up to date HR sensor.

Why doesn't SQ show current elevation based on GPS? Forerunner 245 is able to do that, even though it doesn't have altimeter.

@@leiflala Vivo/Venu have pause but unlike Forerunner/Fenix they don't have the option to resume later. This means that if you pause, GPS is still running and after a couple of minutes it will ask you, if you wanna save the activity or continue. On Forerunner/Fenix you can pause even for a couple of hours without the battery drain.

@@ted363636 Interesting, I can see how that can be an issue in some circumstances. Although I don't think that would be an issue for me :) If needed, I don't mind finishing my workout early and doing another separate one later but for continuity, its always better if both workouts are combined, sure! I love my regular Venu but why tf can't it do open water swim. Feel like it's just software locked to encourage buying a fenix. Seems anti consumer and is very annoying

You can get open water swimming with the Swim 2, Forerunner 745, or Forerunner 945 as well. Software development costs money, along with time to test those features.

@@leiflala Fitbit, Samsung both making squared watches now. Fitbit was rectangular with their step trackers and went square with their higher end. Samsung released square watches for their woman’s line.

Just some feedback, but your video is preceded by an advert for the Cardieo watch, which has been torn down and described as fake and misleading. (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l76an7Kk3N7HlqM.html) I don't know if there's anything you can do about it, but I'm not sure you'd want to be associated with such a product.

Multilinguals, be warned. No unicode support for $350 'smartwatch.' For asian languages, you won't be able to receive notifications in the language, if you've purchased your device outside the country where it's spoken. Just a bunch of squares, like □□□□□. Fitbit got it sorted out in 2015 for christ's sake.

Venu SQ it's pure garbage. The vibration motor it's sooo cheap, like a poor chinese clone from 2012....you can not feel it but you hear it!!! The screen is sooo small, with huge bezels. The form it's perfect but Garmin use super low tech on this "smartwatch" and that's a shame. Do NOT buy it!
