For those who think this is nothing special, you completely miss the point of blues music. If you judge a blues guitarist or artist based on technical wizardry, then once again, you miss the point. Blues' beauty lies in its simplicity. Nailing the feeling of blues is far more important than how fast or complex the riffs are. Gary has got that feeling. You can tell he's listened to A LOT of blues just from this simple video. That's how you learn that feeling. If you want 'wizardry', listen to Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Eric Johnson.

@@jungleninja8415 when you cut it down to its roots it is actually quite simple, although you do have to be skilled within your fingers, it is really only one person playing rhythmic guitar through 12 bars while the other plays blues licks. However this can not be replicated easily as you have stated, the feel that Gary is putting into the blues licks along with the other dude keeping the beat and filling in for him is nothing short of remarkable. But the idea itself; of the 12 bar blues is quite simple

For all of you guys saying GCJ isn't technically as good as his contemporary blues artists (as in slow speed), just remember that blues was born out of the most average people that had a gift for creating emotion through song. BB King started playing guitar bc his pastor played guitar, and he learned practically everything from his cousin Bukka White, no books, no learning about modes and complicated chords until near the end of his life . His playing is much slower than SRV or Clapton, but guess who idolized him? Fuckin Paul Butterfield and Bloomfield. The theory is that over time, to progress the genre, musicians began to employ more technicality, not to throw the older players in the dirt, but to continue their legacy. GCJ is raw, and from what I've read, grew in the same isolation as the early blues players. Derek Trucks, who played a solo basically at B.B.'s speed in front of him, was told by B.B it was "the best he ever heard it". Does that mean I think SRV or Clapton or Mayer is bad? Absolutely not, Clapton is my favorite guitarist of all time. It's two different styles of improvisation, and I don't think it's fair to say one is better than the other. And to be quite honest, in this clip GCJ has a Big Bill Broonzy vibe, one of CLAPTONS heroes
@bassinblue
@bassinblue 6 жыл бұрын
The thing about Blues is, I love the old stuff, because it was kinda new then. I don't like blues now, (no offence to GCJ) because it's literally things people have learned but they're putting several licks together in order, that has already been created. A lot of guitarist knew this a LONG time ago and changed it up, like David Gilmour, Hendrix, Jimmy Page etc. Blues is something of the past, but not a reason to hate it.

This sounds like what the guitars first language would be. Like it's the fundamentals of everything and it's feeling the guitar out as opposed to just making it do what you want. It also feels like the strings are connected to his soul. Blues is deep music, it's born out of pain and suffering and resilience, as well as the ironic beauty of sorrow. It may be difficult for some people to empathize with the literal history of the blues, but anyone can empathize with that screaming sadness, that gut wrenching rage at the hopelessness of our situations. 😊
