Gary Numan, member of the new wave band Tubeway Army with hits like "Are Friends Electric?" is known for his unique style that he describes as "like an android". He is considered as one of the pioneers of electronic music. Numan debuted as a soloist with the album "The Pleasure Principle", a rock album with no guitars, instead Numan used synthesizers to create a distorted and metallic tone.

I have been fortunate to meet Gary Numan x3 times. He was so humble, and even remembered meeting before. I once dressed as a Storm Trooper while my mate dressed as Darth Vader. GN loved it and laughed his ass off. Evening posting the photo on his Twitter feed. He's such a great bloke and a brilliant song writer. His stage shows are fantastic.

He's so right about cable tv & media ruining the variety of music. Nowadays its too formulaic. I remember buying an album and getting the train home reading the cover, inside cover, label & all, even sometimes the smell of certain sleeves which sounds weird now but people of my generation will know exactly what i mean. Good times.

...when Antichrist Superstar dropped, it was the scent of the sleeve that affected me most, after my ears. There’s a lot of info on the early Numan years on ToTP; even to me, looking back on a time before my own, there was such a new wave of fascinating sound and vision from this period.

Amazing that I’m only realizing at 54, how cool he is, and I liked his tunes when I was in high school! The live performances I seen are so cool! No wonder his wife was crushing on him at a young age!

Charmingly honest, unwavering punk attitude, deceptively funny ,,as driven as a juggernaut,as focused as a laser beam ,,I've seen them all,Bowie Floyd U2 etc,,but Tubeway army EdinburghaPlayhouse 1979 was still the best live concert I ever seen, the sound was just unbelievable quite simply ,Gary Numan Cool as Fk ! .love him.!.

Fantastic! Living in NJ (US) all my life, I constantly heard the praising of Springsteen and Jovi...to my disgust. Maybe that's a bit too harsh, but, like Gary, I gained absolutely nothing from listening to those kinds of artists.

That was interesting he didn't rate Devo. I know he hung out with Mark Mothersbaugh a few years ago. Mark is a great artist and Devos reaction to Kent State is kind of poignant. Wish I knew more about behind the scenes of these artists.

Sorry Gary , but as much as I like you and what you have done, I still dont believe your story of just finding a synth in a record studio, and just figured out how to use if in one day. You were heavy influenced by the 77 punky version of Ultravox, and knew what they were doing.

Cool Interview but the thing is although I am a massive fan I am a bit puzzled about the Steve Strange feud thing I mean surely there had to be a door policy otherwise you would have every fucking stupid ordinary cockroach pleb in London to come and gawp( and beat up) the clubbers and I hardly think that Numan would tell his backing band that would be OK you can just turn up in jeans and a t shirt or an ordinary suit thing ( unless it was like the black gear they were wearing on the Touring Principle 79 tour ) So why do something as fucking stupid as that ? ( And I was a fan of Visage and .Steve Strange) Seems daft especially as that would have boosted the publicity of the Blitz ( I used to run a very short lived Gothic Punk affair''The Crypt'' so the publicity I know about and the door policy )
@biancachristie
@biancachristie 3 жыл бұрын
Steve Strange was not your typical gatekeeper. Of course clubs have to have some kind of door policy, but he was legendary for being the *worst*. Refusing Gary’s band illustrates exactly how arbitrary he could be. And how clueless-wtf was he thinking when he wanted someone else to extend the courtesy that he wouldn’t give? smh
@DerVampyrEngel
@DerVampyrEngel 3 жыл бұрын
@@biancachristie Well he didn't get away with it , he got hated on the club circuit because of his door policy's and also what Gary did to him when Steve tried to gatecrash Gary's party, just left Steve outside though I don't know what Steve expected after refusing Gary's band entry to the Blitz
