Meet Gary Vaynerchuk, a 35 year old New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best-Selling author who is also a self-trained wine and social media expert. From a young age, it was clear that Gary was a businessman. At 8 years old he was operating 7 lemonade stands in his neighborhood and by 10 he had moved onto selling baseball cards at local malls. In high school while working at his family owned liquor store, Gary started reading The Wine Spectator and wine books, and realized collecting wine offered an allure similar to his previous hobby of collecting baseball cards. With a wealth of knowledge and an entrepreneurial spirit, Gary spent every weekend of his college years at his parents' wine store. Recognizing the importance of e-commerce in 1997, Gary launched Winelibrary.com and helped grow his family business significantly from $3 million to $45 million by 2005.
In 2006, with a flipcam and NY Jets bucket Gary began Wine Library TV which revolutionized the wine world. His wine reviews soon attracted over 100,000 viewers each day and his die-hard fans nicknamed themselves "Vayniacs." Gary's cult-like following was the result of his unconventional, often irreverent commentary on wine. Using comical expressions like "Sniffy Sniff" and "The Oakmonster," he encourages straightforward wine tasting and debunks wine myths. A business visionary Gary also started Cinderella Wine, a flash sale website which features one wine per day beginning at 9PM EST for 24 hours sold at a severely discounted price. In 2011, he's continuing his mission to expand palates and breakdown wine barriers with the launch of his iPhone app Daily Grape. The new app allows viewers to watch his daily wine review show from their phone (or on the web), and add wines he has tasted to their wishlist. He also started a monthly newsletter that gives readers access to the hundreds of wines he tastes and reviews each month off camera.
Gary does not claim to be a 'techie', but in 2005, he began video blogging and is known as a true social media trailblazer! He has close to 1 million followers on Twitter and was included in BusinessWeek's list of the top 20 people every entrepreneur should follow. Gary's first business book Crush It! Why Now Is the Time to Cash in on Your Passion (October 2009) hit the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Associated Press Best-Sellers lists in its first weeks. It maps out Gary's road rules for how to "Crush It" in today's business market by following your passion and building your own personal brand. His second New York Times bestseller The Thank You Economy (March 2011), details the effect of social media on business and has become required reading for business leaders. In the spring of 2009, Gary and his brother AJ launched VaynerMedia, a new breed of agency that helps Fortune 500 companies like Campbell Soup Company, PepsiCo, Green Mountain Coffee, the NY Jets, the NHL and the NJ Nets find their social media voices and build their digital brands.
Gary has appeared on countless programs from Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Ellen to MSNBC, CNBC, CNN and NPR. He was also notably featured in Decanter Magazine's 2009 Power List which is a list of the 50 most influential people in wine and named Innovator of the Year at Wine Enthusiast's 2009 Wine Star Awards. Additionally, Gary was one of Askmen.com's 49 Most Influential Men of 2009.
Gary's ultimate goal is to own the New York Jets. Although his various businesses obviously play an enormous role in his life, he always puts his family first.

6:25 - 6:47 I literally had issues coping with what he said there, until it clicked...I'm curious to understand why we're always told by people of success that they trusted themselves and did it on their own etc. etc.. and yet we're following them despite the fact they say "Trust yourself"....I need a break from listening to 'great' advice..and need to start formulating my own ideas to hopefully tell every1 when I become successful...

@@maestromiyagi4101 To be very honest, I did continue to watch a few of his videos. But I really did, and still do, realize that it's far better to test the waters yourself, than to follow what ppl are saying. Reason being is that nowadays, the people who are telling you either are copying someone else's video, or have done it themselves. You get way more when you go through the mud on your own.

my premise is absolutely accurate... "a self-trained wine expert"? .. hardly... his father built the wine business and then Trained him in the business.... he has had an enormous advantage over truly self-directed business men... he took ZERO risk... his father did... Gary just rode along on the gravy train... I will give him credit that he built upon his father's business... but let's be honest about the Golden Spoon this man has feed from, shall we... he owes his success to his Papa....

your glorifying his launch pad 'battle'. Sure not everyone is given a fair playing field in this world, but Gary at least has the decency to share his talent, experience, direction, and predictions. Others might have you bid millions for a lunch to discuss these things like Warren Buffet might. Who knows though, Gary may one day as well auction his own lunch meeting since he is a businessman, so you better pay attention to what he has to offer now than to nit pick at his biography.

Owning a liquor store that sells wine does not make one a wine expert. It makes you an expert in filling a demand. Gary took his father's business and turned it into a retail wine store. He then built it up to what it is today. You're just making excuses as to why you can't be as successful. Gary DID take a risk, what if changing his father's discount liquor store into a retail wine store flopped and he had driven his father's business to the ground? Sounds to meas you're jealous.

Yeah he speaks him mind and cuts the bs, but besides personal advices and attitude he didn't deliver any strategy or tactic. Maybe that works for salespeople and "hustlers" but business is build on processes and strategies, not personal charisma. He makes for a great leader/motivator, a modern day Tony Robbins, but I don't see nor hear a business mind. This feels like listening to George W Bush making a speech about our need to go to war versus Sun Tzu distilling the ins and outs of how to deliver victory on the battlefield. I did not come to watch that video with the intend to not like it, I've heard about this guy too many times not to want to see some kind of value, and granted a lot of marketing is fluffy, a lot of tactics but not a lot of structure, and maybe, just maybe that is the nature of marketing. However, this feels like a stream of consciousness rather than a thought out plan, and I don't care if it's marketing, sales, social networking or whatever, a man without a plan plans for failure. I don't like the pep talk frame, I don't need a coach. Business as a frame is very much like boxing, so I do like the jab jab punch metaphor, but as MayWeather shows, Ali and Tyson before him as well, boxing is a chess game. I see no chess moves here, no thinking forward ahead of the competition, no anticipation, no strategy, nada, nothing. I came, I saw nothing, and I walked away. Next onto another marketing guru. This is all hype.

Do you think this man has built four multi-million media companies from money earned from motivational success seminars? This guy was making three grand in middle school by selling baseball cards. He turned a mom and pop liquor store into a $8+ million a year business. Look at individuals like Jay Z, Sean Combs, Mark Cuban, and Elon Musks, their success in a result of radically divergent innovations. Really interested in who is on your list for true business innovators.
@brysonsocall123

Also he has said verbatim "I try to put myself out of business everyday." The way he goes about this by way of considering who and how the next Zuckerberg, the next Steve Jobs, the next Bezos is going to make him irrelevant, then he beats them. In chest you worry about how to beat your opponent as much as you worry about how they can beat you.
@gmensah2008
@gmensah2008 7 жыл бұрын
brysonsocall123 Ok, let break it down. He didn't start from scratch. He took his family business and expanded it during a period of high growth in a high growth market. Wine in the early 2000s is like today's real estate in San Francisco. I'm not saying there is no skill involved in growth, I'm not saying it just happens, but it's a different set of skills altogether from starting from scratch, from starting-up, from going from zero to anything. Those first steps are are the harder steps. You may agree or disagree with this so far as this only involves my opinion and not facts. From now on let's look at the facts. Watch the video and from that come up with a plan. A plan that shows how to get started today, and what to expect, what to watch for, and how to get there. Once you have that plan, look at any item you have and ask yourself why that item is necessary. Could you easily replace it with something else? Because when I learn about a business strategy, or a business model, or a way to success that's what I want to know. Not a resume of what you have achieved, but how to reproduce and achieve that success, because even if we were to say he is this great success, doesn't mean he's a great teacher and knows how to distill his knowledge. Read Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu tells you how and what to do to achieve your goal. Then he goes on to explain why it works, why it MUST BE that way, and no other way. Read the Art of War. Read Rich Dad Poor Dad. Read from Good to Great. All three books have one thing in common. No pep talk. All about the moves, the angles, the insight. Hell, read Karl Marx, then go back to this video and tell me you still feel the same way.

I find he gives a lot of specific advice, a lot of how to use each platform and how to story tell as a marketer. My business has benefited greatly from applying the things Gary talks about at a time when no one is doing that. In 20 years people will discuss these strategies in books when it's already passed. The difference with Gary is that he practices what he preaches, he is not selling a get rich quick plan. His message is all about work ethic and as someone who owns his own business that message has been invaluable.
@gmensah2008
@gmensah2008 7 жыл бұрын
I don't doubt that he practices what he preaches, I doubt that a fortune 500 would learn anything there. I doubt that anybody outside of small entrepreneurs and wannabe entrepreneurs will get any lasting insight. A pep talk is not the same thing as a business plan or business model.

Those guys made money off computers, software, cars, rockets, and smart investments. Gary makes money in part by selling his personal experiences with and insight on various media. It clearly has value to a lot of people, so you can't really knock him for talking about himself. But you sound like you would know. How many millions are in your bank account?
@b4ss3
@b4ss3 10 жыл бұрын
You completely missed the point here Kiran. What I meant was that he could have done this whole thing without sounding like an asshole and all the "I am so awesome" and his "I've been so gifted...business talent.. bla bla..." and stuff like that. But for some reason he felt the need to brag so much it got annoying. At least in my country bragging is looked down upon, because secure, confident people who know they are awesome don't have to tell others because others see it too. I'm not sure if it's true but according to the internet he's only worth about $10 million, I don't consider that to be a lot. I am eager to see if he manages to get up to some real amounts of money, which should be easy considering his enormous business talents.
@kiranmkota
@kiranmkota 10 жыл бұрын
I see what you're getting at. I've known people who brag and it's annoying. But it's annoying because they'll interrupt someone else to do it, or say it out of context, or tell people who don't care. Or worst of all, in my opinion, they're liars in addition to braggarts. I just feel like it's more forgivable here, where he is answering interview style questions. Also, if you watch his other videos, some of them are more toned down, others more obnoxious than this, but they're insightful. Plus Gary continually refers to himself as a narcissist, attention-whore, etc. So at least it isn't something that he isn't aware of Blanket statements like "Secure, confident people who know they are awesome don't have to tell others because others see it too" aren't truths set in stone. Some confident people brag. Some people never brag their whole life (yeah right) and are insecure. Humbleness is a virtue, but it doesn't go hand in hand with confidence.
@b4ss3
@b4ss3 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, yeah you're right about the confidence thing of course some confident people brag, but I would say (at least where i'm coming from) they are a clear minority. And now, what I'm talking about are truly confident people, not people who love themselves, but people who know what they are and don't feel the need to shove it down other peoples throats. Of course they might speak about things they have achieved but in a different way. Not in the same self-glorifying way seen in this video. I was enjoying it otherwise but after a while it got annoying, bordering to disgusting. This is just my opinion.
@kiranmkota
@kiranmkota 10 жыл бұрын
Yea I totally see where you're coming from and now that I think of it, the whole "winning is in my dna" schpiel is kind of outlandish/unnecessary. I was letting it slide because I think he articulates his main points well, and it's beneficial to me (I work in advertising, so this is like a training video as far as I'm concerned). When I saw your "narcissist" comment, I thought you were in the camp of being-humble-for-the-sake-of-being-humble. The kroll show larry byrd skit came to mind
