Just saw a video of a guy who uses an uncooked spaghetti noodle, snaps off a piece to size, slides the gas block on, rotates the barrel/block upside down and wiggles the block so the spaghetti slips into the port when it lines up with the barrel... then tightens up the block, turns the barrel back upright, sends a cleaning rod down the barrel to snap off the spaghetti and the 2 pieces of it slide out the front end. Harder to describe than to do, and super easy!

A cheap set of auto parts store feeler gauges is invaluable for this. I also pencil the center line on the shoulder of the barrel before putting the gas block on and then pencil the center of the gas block to line them up, ensuring no twist left or right.

I just make a snap pin out of the thickest part of a toothpick to line up the gas port and block. It cost almost nothing and there's always a toothpick laying around.
@mcnuggatron2129
@mcnuggatron2129 3 жыл бұрын
Can you explain exactly what you did?
@sierrabravo9228
@sierrabravo9228 3 жыл бұрын
@@mcnuggatron2129 first, clip off the pointy ends of a regular toothpick. for a clamp on gas block, drop the toothpick into the barrel gas port, and cut it so that a 16th of an inch is sticking up above the barrel. place the top half of the gas block so that the toothpick goes into the gas port in the bottom of the block. then loosely attach the lower half of the clamp to the block and give it a little wiggle till you find it centered over the toothpick. if you're using a sleeve type gas block, put the toothpick in the gas port hole of the barrel and clip it flush, I use nail clippers. then slide the gas block down the barrel to the end. turn the upper upside down and wiggle the gas block till the toothpick drops into the gas block, when this happens you only have a tiny bit of movement. mind you the gas tube is attached and I have the BCG in the upper for additional points of contact. once the set screws are secured turn the upper back to the upright position and a toothpick will fall back down into the barrel. then take a cleaning rod and give the tooth pick a little push it will break or snap and the upper half will fall down and push that out with the cleaning rod. The holes in the gas blocks are close to twice the size of the hole in the barrel, so there's a Lotta room for adjustment. I saw a brownells video on installing gas blocks with their snap pins, they're made of metal and break when you push on them with the cleaning rod. I figured a wooden toothpick would do the same thing, and I didn't have to order anything. i've use this method for six or seven gas blocks, and it worked fine every time. I hope this information helps you, if you have any further questions don't be afraid to ask!

Usually the gas port hole in the gas block is nearly double the diameter of the gas port hole in your barrel. This will allow for a slight misallinment of the gas block relative to the barrel, yet will still deliver a full charge of gas into your gas tube...

Hey K.B.. The reason you wind up with that gap is because you are not installing the forward capture collar for the standard hand guard. When installing a free float hand guard leave a .025 (?) gap and "Bob's yer Uncle"!

I just did this earlier today, those little plastic pins that HB industries makes help alot too. You put one end in the barrel and then when you turn the upper upside down the other half falls into the gas block lining it up. After you are done you run a cleaning rod down through the chamber down the barrel and it breaks and pushes the plastic piece out. Just a little assurance that you are lined up, and it worked well for me

A good way for alignment is to lay the upper on a flat/ granite table the pivot pin flat of the upper flat on the table and the bottom of the gas block flat on the edge of the table. Then torque the barrel end screw of the gas block, then take it off the table and torque the chamber end screw. Perfectly concentric. I get it perfect every time. Beats eyeballing it by a mile.

This is spot on, the first screw hole is 180 degrees opposite of the gas port in the gas block. Align the screw hole with the port in the barrel, then mark the position on the block and barrel with a sharpie. Done. No jigs or other gimmicks needed. And as far as spacing/ gap between the block and the barrel edge, a standard business card is the perfect size for the gap. People make this stuff entirely too complicated.

I use a small strip of masking tape to line up the EXACT center of the barrel's gas port to the TDC line of the barrel ...no pencil lines, scribe marks, then cut the masking tape so as not to interfere with the gas block positioning. Then use a feeler gauge to ensure the right distance is achieved between the gas block and the barrel's gas port flange.

All my 5.56 SBR are 11.5" with a 1:7 Twist barrel and a carbine length gas system. We also use a Odin adjustable gas block. One little trick is, open up the gas port on the barrel one drill bit size larger. And that typically will be the size of the gas port on the Odin gas block. But be sure and check it. This gives you better control over what often is a "Over gased" symptom. Especially if you are running a suppressor on the rifle. I often get guys that will give me that funny look and say "Thats nice, But you can't get any distance out of it" And here is when the question is asked "How much $$ you got in your pocket??" Because with my 77gr Serria TMK hand loads, I can bang a 12"steel target with this rifle all day long at 300 yrds. And go 10 for 10 on a full IPSC steel target at 400 yrds. With the same ammo. And just shooting off a forward mounted bipod on a good steady rest or shooting prone (which I don't like to do, After my severe neck and left shoulder injury 32 yrs ago) That Angus bull won that day. However his New York strip steaks that we cut out of him, that where the size of a radiator where delicious a year later. But I still suffer from getting the shit beat out of me by him. So maybe he did win after all 🤔.

DO NOT DO ANYTHING HE JUST SAID. HORRIBLE ADVICE. You only enlarge the barrel’s port as a last resort on UNDER gassed guns… And if you ever feel the need to do so.. what size is the “next drill bit size bigger”? Based off what bit set? Based off what increments? The over sized port hole on the gas block is meant to give people a small margin of error in alignment. It’s not the size hole that the barrel port should be.

I used to stress over gas block alignment. Nowadays I just slap that GB on there eyeball it then tighten her up. The port in the block is oversized compared to the port on the barrel so that precision alignment isnt required. Thanks and I enjoy your build videos.

Newb question, is gas hole same spot on every 16" barrel with Mid length gas tube? Could you swap a low profile and a A2/vice versa? Or once you drill, that decides because you wouldn't spot weld to re drill a rifle barrel because it would damage rifling or be un safe? Hey thanks trying to get better understanding.

I think some gas blocks need the gap and some need butted. I used a dimpling jig which always gives you the gap, and ended up with low gas and had to go back and butt it up against the shoulder on the barrel. You can also measure from shoulder to center of gas port, then see how that compares from the edge of the gas block to the gas hole... Usually the gas block hole is large enough you probably won't run into trouble either way though....
@pickin4you
@pickin4you 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe those that make the gas blocks should send along a few stainless spacers. Use your way to locate the hole, and slide on a shim/spacer that fits when it butts up snug, and all is solved. No guess work. Remember now.. I worked 4 years with a gunsmith, so things like this just pop in my mind. Easy fix and cost next to nothing for the makers of the gas blocks to supply with it, even if it was an extra $4.00, it would be worth it to get a perfect alignment every time. Talk to your friends who send you those and see what they say.

Since the hole in the block is so much larger than the hole in the journal, does it really matter? Even if the block is not perfectly aligned the block hole will still be over the journal hole.

For the gap, i just cut in half a piece of the standard hand guard front cap and used it as a spacer.

You forgot to mark using a pencil both the barrel where gas block ends and a hask mark on barrel shoulder and gas block so its centered otherwise the hole thing about using set screw hole is pointless, just a T mark would do...
