Although, to be fair, if Gascoigne had done his job as a professional footballer and not tried to break opponents' legs then the ref's decision wouldn't have been an issue in the first place.

I genuinely think history has been drastically effected by the poor decisions on this day. Even in 1991 that foul on Parker is a straight red. If he'd sent him off then Forest win the cup and Clough retires with dignity. Gazza may have also learned his lesson and grown up after disgracing himself and costing his team the FA Cup final (like Beckham in 98). At the very least he doesn't get that horrendous injury he ended up with because he wasn't on the pitch to commit his even worse tackle on Charles.

I met Gazza a few times back in the late '80's and can confirm that he is a genuinely lovely lad, with a heart of gold. I know quite a few stories of his incredible generosity to people less well off than himself (including buying a mini-bus for a local school in a deprived area). However, I was also at Wembley that day and sadly he really let himself down. During the Cup Final warm up, the Brass Band were playing & marching on the hallowed turf and Paul chipped a few balls up and knocked one of the musician's helmet's off. Then there were those two horrific challenges. Yes, Paul is a flawed human being (just like the rest of us), it's just that he happened to be a genius with a football at his feet. The consolation for me from the '91 Cup Final is that neither of the Forest lads were injured and we can remember Paul for the great footballing memories such as Italia '90 and Euro '96.

I have always thought that the manager / senior players, knowing what a loose canon PG was, should have taken him under their wings, spoken to him about the importance of keeping his head. I know that he too should have had the capability to calm himself down but I think the occasion get the better of him. Ultimately, he was never the same player after this game.

That first tackle was arguably a red but at least if Milford had given Gascoigne a yellow card for the tackle on Parker it might have calmed him down a bit and prevented the second reckless tackle. Pretty awful decisions from a referee who was normally pretty good.

Absolute shocking refereeing - should have been sent off for the first challenge - you say it was karma, but it wasn’t - he was substituted and Paul Stewart came on and help Spurs win the game If the ref had done his job properly Tottenham would have been reduced to 10 men and Forest would have probably gone in to win the game Forest were totally cheated out of the Cup that year
@MrDogmeatman2 жыл бұрын
It was 50-50 if you ask me. Gazza should have gone, I don't dispute that, but maybe so should Crossley for his foul on Lineker for the penalty. The commentator said keepers had been sent off for that in the league that season. Lineker also had a perfectly legit goal disallowed for offside when it was clearly on side in the replays. Pearce's free kick arguably could have been disallowed for Glover's foul on Gary Mabbutt which created the gap for the goal. And Stewart was in the starting line up, it was Nayim that came on for Gazza. Blame the referee for not getting his cards out, it probably should have been 10 v 10 and 1-0 to Spurs at half time.
@DaveAndBeth19782 жыл бұрын

Two dreadful challenges from a man who lit the touch paper of self destruction. The referee was clearly overawed as Clough maintained in his autobiography. Gascogne was recklessly out of control.

I wonder if Gascoigne took drugs before the game. He was so psyched up it was ridiculous. I know he had to take pills to sleep, he admitted to it for the semis, so I am guessing he took them before the final.
