The best gastroparesis foods! What foods are and aren't tolerated by those with gastroparesis. Then I put my favorite 10 foods in order of good for gastroparesis to bad for gastroparesis.
What I Eat in a Day With Gastroparesis: • What I Eat In A Day Wi...
What is gastroparesis?
Gastroparesis literally translated means "stomach paralysis". Gastroparesis is a digestive disorder in which the motility of the stomach is either abnormal or absent. In healthy people, when the stomach is functioning normally, contractions of the stomach help to crush ingested food and then propel the pulverized food into the small intestine where further digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs. When the condition of gastroparesis is present the stomach is unable to contract normally, and therefore cannot crush food nor propel food into the small intestine properly. Normal digestion may not occur.

Dottie, just curious from one GP’r to another, how are you doing these days? I have had it now for 11 years and with time it has become bearable. The less is better way of life is so true for me nowadays. It IS a real game changer in Life and not just for you, but the need to explain it to your family and friends. Just keep doing the best research you can manage and trust with time you can find that right foods for your body. Every one’s experience can be so different as there are so many things to account for. Let us know how you are, you are very lucky to have found Izzie’s site, she is so great at explaining things that do and don’t work. She even has great ideas for what meds and or other digestive aids she has found which help. Again, what May work for her may not work for all of us. We each have to figure it out. Hoping life is treating you much better these days!!

I got diagnosed with GP in September and I had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks with a feeding tube. My life has been ruined ever since this started happening. It’s so hard to eat literally anything and the worst part is watching my mom and siblings eat whatever they want and I’m just there. Idk how people manage to stay happy and enjoy their lives with this condition but no matter how hard I try I just can’t and it really really sucks..

Hey girl, I was just diagnosed as well. And I looked into a video by “that girl Audra” where she just did white rice for a couple days-weeks, then she added SUPER well cooked veggies, until she was able to slowly digest more food. Now she’s on a vegan diet and can eat lots of fiber. Doesn’t work for everyone but it’s helped me. Juicing/ soup helps too. You just have to retrain your system to digest again. @@themelonsoup yeah pretty sure it is fibromyalgia of the stomach is what my mayo doctor said and he suggested it. Lyrica is also an option but talk to your doctor. Pretty sure it was 3 waves of stomach flu that set my cns into overdrive and then it felt like my whole digestive system stopped causing the misdiagnosis of gastroparesis. Now I can literally hear my food moving through me. After 5 years of having to think about what rice to eat next I was probably depressed. If you find you can eat eggs and they pass out of your stomach good it will trick the gastric emptying test into thinking you do not have any problems. Eggs are actually good for fibromyalgia.

It was so cool to find this video! I was diagnosed with GP when I was 15 and I'm 21 now. I have never met another person with the disease and it is a really lonely and hard thing to go through most days. I use to have such a good appetite and would eat so many of the foods that, once diagnosed, had to give up completely. I have Diverticulitis as well and it adds to the food and drink I can't have. Between the 2 of them I can't have raw fruits and veggies (they need to be "well cooked"), eggs, beans, rice, seeds, nuts (they can be ground into powder and cooked into things just not in a form where they get caught in the pockets/holes caused by Diverticulitis), citrus of any kind, oats, tomatoes, carbonated drinks, coffee, and anything else that ferments, creates gas, is very acidic, or harsh that you can think of, these are just my main things that are avoided on a daily. It can get really hard to not only find things to eat in certain eateries but to also want to go out with friends or even eat family dinners during the holidays because I have to be so picky with my food. My roommates and boyfriend (bless them) do everything in their power to help me and make meals that we can all enjoy but even then, it gets really hard for me to enjoy them when I realise most if not all are unhealthy meals. I have struggled with my health as well as my weight for the last 6 years and while it is much, much easier than it was in the beginning, and I am more than thankful to not need a tube, it feels like a crushing weight that wants to suffocate me most of the time. This video made me happy because it helps me to know that I am not alone in this, and while we all can have different forms of this disease, we're all still fighting it, and living, together...

@@MK-cj9yu May I ask what your symptoms are for GP and POTS? My doctor thinks I have POTS - and coincidentally enough those symptoms started at the same time my stomach issues started (upper abdomen distension, almost no hunger, losing a lot of weight, etc.) but they can't figure out what my stomach issue is. I don't feel nauseas or vomit so I don't know if it's GP. I also feel short of breath or easily winded if my stomach is really swollen. Not sure if that's common with anyone else.

@@annemariemele-barone4921 for me, I’ve passed out quite a few times, and I’m dizzy often. I get blood pooling, which is where my hands and feet turn purple. Also my body doesn’t regulate temperature well at all, which can be common with dysautonomia. I could also feel my heart racing after standing a lot, and my vision goes black after standing up. For GP, I had horrible stomach pain for a long time, vomiting, I feel full after not eating much, and weight loss only because I was so scared to eat for a while. I lived off of bread and liquids for a few months. You can have GP and not vomit or gain weight. I’ve gone through periods where I gain a bunch of weight. I feel like that’s a huge misconception. I've been on a liquid diet for about a month again, idk if I have GP but we were worried its IBD, I have a GI appointment in a couple of weeks. I have soft foods in small amounts when I can. But I've saved up my Zofran for today (Thanksgiving) especially and have my Peppermint Tea waiting to go with the meal. I've sat outside some evenings crying because family either wants to make me feel included and comes to sit with me and the sight of dinner drives me insane, or if I sit alone then the smell of dinner can suck, too. Today is already hard, smelling it all cooking, not being included for the first time in cooking and baking because I'm in my wheelchair and they thought doing everything was nicer for me than asking for help, and then with the virus almost none of us are here for the first time in forever. So I thought I'd watch some What To Eat/What To Avoid before meal time today to really remind myself what to snack on with everyone. :')

I have just gotten word from my primary care provider that I most likely have gastroparesis (I still need to have a gastric emptying test before it will be official) and finding this video was encouraging. I was told about 6 years ago I had IBS by a different provider but none of the medications worked and I felt awful. Around about September 2020 I was constantly sick and due to COVID and parent difficulties, I only got my endoscopy two days ago. I was not at all expecting this diagnosis and honestly thought it would be Crohn's or Peptic Ulcers. I've been odd in that I just keep gaining weight and with how fully my stomach was, I'm wondering how much of it I've just been holding onto... Anyway, thank you for this video! It's really interesting seeing how people live with this condition if nothing else. I'm currently only allowed to eat what I can put through a blender (and that is low fat) and I've been struggling a bit with it because I'm just constantly hungry. They told me no chocolate either, but admittedly, brownies have given me some of the worst reactions so I'm not surprised to see them ranked so low. I'm going to look through your channel some more here! If someone has gastroparesis and hyperproteinemia on top of EDS, like in my case, it gets even more interesting. My hp is atypical, so I have to go meat-heavy several times a month. Yak, ostrich, and beefalo seem to cause the least trouble in terms of meat. I just add avocado oil or bacon fat for the necessary fat. A handful of vegetables, only cooked. Cherries, blueberries, and huckleberries. Goat milk kefir (blueberry acai), Australian or Greek yogurt (very few flavors), sea salt chocolate (coconut-free), and about 4 different flavors of ice cream. That's about all I can eat, and even those, I sometimes regret. This is the "greatly improved /expanded" list. Yak, ostrich taste like very lean beef, btw.

Over the past 5 years I've been hospitalized numerous times due to cyclic vomiting, dehydration and kidney failure. I've noticed during these episodes I have no gut sounds and no bowel movements. I've been on IV phosphates for malnourishment. Food has gone from a passion to a fear. I find it interesting your mention of sushi. Sashimi is the first thing I'm drawn to after a cycle of vomiting and no food. I know I'm close to the end of an episode when I can hear/feel peristalsis start back up. Hey! My names AJ and I’m 19. I’ve stumbled upon your video now because for most of my teen life I have a hard time eating food. I put way more food on my plate than my body allows me to eat. I’ve always thought it was super strange. I am only able to eat a few bites of food before I lose appetite and feel like I might throw up if I eat anymore. Even if I haven’t eaten anything the entire day it can still happen! I’ve never actually thrown up but I always feel like I’m starving and I’m not eating the amount of food I should be. I haven’t gained weight since about my freshman year of high school. I’ve always been in between 130 and 140 lbs. I also deal with lactose intolerance and I use lactaid pills to help digest dairy and it works well but I still get upset stomachs after eating. Its not every time but it happens a good amount of the time. I’ve finally decided to try and figure out why this is and was hoping I could get some feedback from anyone in the comments about there experiences. I have not seen a doctor but I hopefully plan to! Thank you all!

Me too...get the nausea bad ,but usually do not vomit. Sometimes I dry heave though. My MD is also a D.O. so she said try both gas x for after meals and beano before meals. I use lactaid tablets for dairy too. Also she taught me a technique for massaging my stomach to help aid in digestion when needed. I would say an MD who is a D.O is a good choice so they can give you the different perspectives on how to tackle the problem at hand. Also I practice intermittent fasting. Having 12 to 16 hours of not eating gives my digestive system a break. I also have complex regional pain syndrome so for me when I have a flare of that the problems with digesting food are worse.Corn is hard to digest, even something like corn chex is impossible. 1 bite makes me bloated ,in pain , nauseous and gassy. I wish you all the best as you sort through this. P.S. initially I lost a few pounds with intermittent fasting , but I did regain them. Be sure to end early with your fasting time . Choosing a window like 5am to 5 pm is wise. When days are very bad my window changes from 1 pm to 5 or 6 pm, then no more eating. It does help

I don't have gastroparesis, however, this topic does fit chronic pancreatitis. I follow a low fat diet as my body does not digest food easily without the help of medications (pancrelipase). Of course I am only human and indulge in things I like even though I know it can make me feel ill and not digest properly. Love watching your videos.

I have chronic pancreatitis too! And what you say is sooo true...Over and over again I torture myself because it seems that everything I love to eat is bad for me. Over the last year it has gotten more restrictive because I've developed type 3 diabetes. From what I've experienced .. my pancreatic diet and diabetic diet cancel each other out.. so basically I'm left with nothing and dealing with a flare of 1 or the other. I've literally got up and walked away from dieticians .. asking them did you read my file at all? Do you hear what you're saying? Ugh.. frustrating to say the least

@@harvmn22 One Hospitalist wanted me on a low fat, low carb, low sodium diet. I was seeing a Nutritionist who didn't help much other than teaching me portion size of meat being the size of a deck of cards. Other than that, I already knew everything she was teaching me. Those diets do cancel each other out for sure. I have pre-diabetes, but diabetes does run in my family. Do you know what caused your pancreatitis? I'm in the unknown category as I do not drink alcohol and nobody in my family has ever had it before. In fact, I was the worst case of it that my surgeon has seen in his 43 years (at the time I was diagnosed).

@@RollingThunderDJs mine is pretty bad as well, with most Drs refusing to put me on their table or I get referred again.. At first they labeled it as alcoholic because I did drink socially, but once that was put in my file I was treated so poorly because of the "stigma" that comes with alcohol. After many many tests and a failed whipple that turnèd into a modified peustow (which further complicates my issues and surgeons not wanting to touch me) it was discovered that mine was a birth deffect caused by divisum (non fusion of the pancreatic duct). So alcohol and social drinking did not help me for sure, but it sped up the process of something that I would eventually have to deal with anyway. Alcohol is a big no no for me.. and was something I enjoyed so I would repeatedlysay well maybe this time I can have a glass of wine with friends .. nope.. almost instantly I become I'll. I don't torture myself that way anymore for sure.. except with food. I've had 2 feeding tubes which makes me look like I have 3 belly buttons 😐, 6+ months of TPN.. to many Ct's,MRI, ultrasounds to count.. I don't qualify for TP/AIT because I no longer have islet cells and have developed vascular issues with the portal vein, biliary problems etc.. I didn't even have a chance to be pre diabetic... suddenly I just "was" and they overlooked it. My sugars were either over 500 or under 50.. still trying to get that right. Sorry for the book lol ... I haven't come across many people who have this issue or if they do they don't talk about it. It's a pain that I would not wish on anyone for sure

@@harvmn22 I was diagnosed in 2015 and spent the better part of the year in and out of the hospital. I lost 110 pounds while in the hospital since it was either TPN or nothing. The past few years has been a lot of ER visits and hospital stays for observation (from flare ups), and plenty of doctors visits. Then there have been other health issues that keep popping up. I have no issue talking about what I've gone through and still go through. I even agree with what you said about not wishing this upon anyone. I've said that I don't even wish this upon my worst enemy. It's been hell at times, but I do get strength from God, family and friends.

I'm not sure if I have commented on this video of yours but on 30 SEP 2021 I had a GI emptying scan and on 05 OCT 2021 I was given my diagnosis of Gastroparesis. It has taken a very long time to get this diagnosis? Please do make a part 2? I know my entire life there are so many different types of foods that I cannot eat without getting sick to my stomach. For example, if I was to eat things like sower cream, and pretty much 95% of fruits and vegetables I will get sick to my stomach? If I was to eat something like mustard,. mayo or any type of said dressings etc that would not be very good? It would be nice to know about other types of tests that can be given to help determine which foods are good and which foods are not? Is there a test where they give you certain foods orally but then there are some of the same foods that you can eat orally and foods that you can't eat orally that could be directly given to you via a GJ feeding tube even if temporarily and they test to see if your body really broke it down and if you react to the foods that you can't eat orally without getting sick to your stomach? It would be nice to see a video of different options of tests and steps like this?

Izzy just want to say that you are so beautiful and that gorgeous smile of yours just lights up the room! 😘😘 much love from a gal pal By the way, just be careful not to eat too much crab/lobster as they can accumulate heavy metals (mercury) and other toxins in their flesh, which humans then eat...and too much can cause problems of its own. Crabs and lobsters and other seafood that is not actual fish (with scales AND fins) may be categorised as "scavenger" organisms which feed on ocean debris and therefore accumulate higher levels of all sorts of toxins, compared to fish that have both scales AND fins. And if you do decide to eat actual fish, make sure it's not from a fish farm, but wild caught, as farmed fish also accumulate high levels of toxins because of the overcrowded conditions they're farmed in. I hope I don't freak you out but I felt I should mention it

(and I have to make sure all the strands are removed from bananas) For me it's less about fibre than about residue. e.g. blended oatmeal is mostly fine but baked beans have too much residue and will trigger a flare up - I can't go near pulses Anyway, thanks for the ideas...going to try that seaweed!!

1. Some ppl find that eating smaller meals frequently helps. 2. Plus making each of the meals well balanced (with protein, carbs, veggies) can help too (to prevent blood sugar crashes). 3. Limiting the amount of fat per meal is key. Too much fat per meal can make gastropareisis worse. (e.g. a sandwich with BOTH avocado and mayonnaise in it can be too much fat... So choose just ONE of either of these to go with the other fillings in the sandwich) 4. Finally, taking digestive enzymes with every meal of the day can make a huge difference (make sure you buy a brand that contains Protease, Amylase, Lipase and Cellulase).
