What made my GASTROPARESIS better?!

What made my Gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying) get better??!! From 18 to around 22 I was dealing with gastroparesis as a result of hEDS. While I still deal with minor symptoms, my gastroparesis is basically gone. In this video, I give you the timeline of my symptoms, explain when they got worse, and also explain what I was doing while my gastroparesis got better. While I can't confirm that these things definitely impacted my gastroparesis, I still hope that this video can be relatable and informational for those dealing with or curious about gastroparesis.

WHAT’S EHLERS-DANLOS SYNDROME?
The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of more than 13 genetic connective tissue disorders that affect the joints and ligaments, blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, and autonomic nervous system, among others. The most common type of EDS is hypermobile EDS (hEDS), which used to be known at type III. Some of the most common symptoms and co-morbidities of hEDS include chronic joint pain, joint instability and dislocations, dysautonomia, and GI tract dysmotility.

I am literally crying right now. I can’t believe so many others understand what I am dealing with. The bloating is so annoying. I’m quit tiny, so my distention is noticeable. I completely stopped leaving my house other than work. I consistently get asked when I’m due, do I know what I’m having, etc. That said, I would still take that over the pain any day. I have had every test you can think of. I not only deal with gastroparesis, I just won’t have bowel movements at all. I once went 28 days. I’m constantly in the hospital. I just want a normal G.I. system like everyone else. Nobody can find a reason for any of this.

I am experiencing similar problems for 3 years now, I have literally gone from doctor to doctor without getting a proper diagnosis. When I tell people about my issues they always blame stress and underestimate the impact of symptoms on my day to day life. It is so nice to connect with a community that is able to relate to this. Big thanks for sharing!

Investigate gastrointestinal Beriberi - acute Thiamine deficiency. Thiamine (B1) is crucial for Nervous System functioning, & it is the Nervous System that controls the digestion. Many of us are extremely deficient. Elliot Overton (EONutrition on here) has lots of videos on Thiamine deficiency & all the issues it can trigger, including digestive. It’s helped me. I prefer it as Benfotiamine. I also take ginger & artichoke extracts. Thiamine deficiency is a big driver of Dysautonomia, POTS, & other Nervous System Disfunction.

Drs told me it’s idiopathic just no cause- and due to that probably I just got diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. I am very thin with no meat on my body from Gastroparesis. I can’t even lose any weight from my body to reduce the sugar. I might try Betain HCL before starting metformin. Bec I could see that the day my sugar is high are the days my gut has issues. Doctor examined my blood pressure and it was fine , my heard rate also was fine too so he took me for an X Ray and this was the worst part for me cause i got so scared fore the result ! Lots of negative thought came to my mind untill he came back to me and told me that i have constipation therefore he recommended me to take some of the laxative and fiber pills ! And now there is a slight a tiny bit of improvement but i still have stomach bloating when i eat so i can eat regularly anymore ! I have had gastroparesis for about 3 years now. What really helps me is regulargly doing cardio exercise (I now run 6 days a week). I don't know if it psychological but I can totally say that it helps me with creating appetite and reduce the nausea. And coffee after food also helped because it sped up the digestion.

I agreed with you. As you know, the exercise increase the digestive system and every meal that I have or in between I make sure I drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. When a person has gastroparesis, they don’t have a proper pH level, I massaged my stomach in a circular way about 27 times and stated it helps to digest and wakes up the stomach. And he told me to stay away from greasy food.

Wow. I am in the process of being diagnosed (meet all diagnostic criteria for h-EDS... and waiting for genetic testing results), but my daughter (7) is showing signs of gastroparesis and I swear that the main reason I was led to figuring out my own diagnosis was so that I could better help my children. She won’t eat any protein, she says it hurts her stomach. Lately she eats very little and just had a two day episode of nausea and stomach pain with vomiting... and I don’t think it is a stomach bug. She eats fruit and carbs and nothing else. It breaks my heart, but I am so grateful to come across this so I can at least have some knowledge and not delay helping her any way I can. Thank you so much for sharing. I really appreciate your videos and insight. I am 42 and finally figuring out what is wrong with me and my siblings and my mom and my aunts... it is a wild journey.

This is incredibly relatable. I was dx'd with collagen gastritis related to celiac (and I'm also an EDSer, so, fun) after several long-term flareups where I'd lose a significant amount of weight in a short amount of time and only subsist on liquids, dietary changes, enzymes and stomach meds and managing my autonomic symptoms has been doing wonders. (I'm back to cramming 2 - 3K calories and being sporty, again!)--really neat to see that I'm not alone in conquering severe GI symptoms.

@@vampirebottom thank you! I did that for a year, with liquids only for the first few months. That was before this swelling started though, so guess I'll have to try it again. It’s really useful to be able to see how someone else has suffered with this, what helped etc, as I can’t get a referral to a gastrologist yet. I’m currently working on creating a DIY elemental diet. One of the first things I would suggest (which no one mentions) is start taking an amino acid supplement. If you’re not digesting food properly it stands to reason that could lead to protein deficiency. Without protein, the body can’t repair tissues. Amino acids will give the body the building blocks it needs to create tissues without the digestive challenge of breaking down proteins in the diet.

Happy birthday!! My bloating looks just like that too and I can gain 5 inches around my waist when I'm bloated. It even seems to extend up into my ribs..I mostly deal with it by avoiding the foods that seem to cause it. Which does leave me on a limited diet, but I do believe it has improved a lot too. Each time I was eating, especially with protein, I would drink the juice of a half lemon in water. Did that for many months and now I don't need the lemon juice. I also take a digestive enzymes called Ultra Digest from Gluten Free Society. I'm avoiding all grains and eat only fresh whole foods. Oh and my Pots symptoms seemed to have gone away once I stopped eating eggs and all dairy. It took a few months though. Both were skyhigh on the IgG test, along with flax and a bunch of other things. From what I read food sensitivities can go away but it can take years... Before I couldn't eat beef without getting severely bloated and now I can. Airborne reactions are a much bigger issue for me these days. And I've seen to have gotten more sensitive since the shutdown. I think I have MCAS but no idea how to get that diagnosed! Believe it's linked to my autism and hypermobility. Even my toes are hypermobile! And here I had thought that was normal.

Was interested to hear you talk about your POTS getting worse around the time you started taking Duloxetine. I’m on Duloxetine at the moment, but my POTS specialist wants me off it as he says it’s like POTS in a pill (in that it makes POTS symptoms so much worse!) I had no idea when I started taking it, so now need to gradually come off it. It’s really good to hear your gastroparesis has improved. Mine seems to be manageable for a while, then it gets really bad for a while and then becomes more manageable again, so it’s always a bit unpredictable xx

Compazine is really old medication, I didn't know they were still available, ty for letting us know. I've had same issues my entire life. Nexium 24 and Tums help a bit as far as GERD and vomit issue due to the gastroparesis/ibs-c and the only thing that kicks my severe nausea is Zofran 8mg, 2 to 3 times per day. The 4mg Zofran do absolutely nothing nor does Phenergan help at all. Meclizine, over the counter, surprisingly helped the nausea sometimes although it's for motion sickness, not nausea caused by other issues, still, one may try it since it's OTC. It's odd, I had Mono/nucleosis in the 7th grade, 40 years ago, constant digestive and exhausted and asthma ever since. This little tidbit, regarding Mono you spoke of was extremely helpful to me, thanks very much. Be safe with side effects with all the meds. I am allergic to many meds so I wish you the best with it all. God bless.

Happy Birthday! I hope that your dreams and wishes come true? My entire life has had a very hard time eating lots of foods and as a kid, I use to have family and friends who use to tell me that I was a picky eater. I have never really been able to eat things like salads many different types of vegetables and fruits. I am very limited when it comes to things like mayo mustard and many different types of spreads etc. When I ate things like this I would get sick to my stomach very easily and sometimes things like smell of these things can get me sick. I can't eat things like a fresh-cut tomato or many different sauces. I can't drink tomato juice but I have had very stripped down smiled spaghetti sauce and I can handle that but if there are things like onion peppers celery cucumbers etc in it I can't eat it. When I go to a restaurant and the waitstaff ask me what I can't eat it is much harder to give them a list than them tell me what is in the food and I would have to let them know if I can or can't eat it. I thought that gastroparesis was something that couldn't go away?
