Gay Man Claps Back At Homophobic Boss. “It's Been A Delight Working With Everybody But You.”

When Barton Jackson was working at a fine art frame shop in college, he was delighted to find out that he was going to be getting a raise - and that the raise would be applied retroactively. When the store’s manager found out he was gay, however, the retroactive portion of his raise was quickly snatched away. Not one to take this lying down, Barton quickly found a new job and ended his employment at the shop in the most fabulously proud way possible.

Reminded me of a work farewell years ago, where my team leader said a few words, then handed over to me. Being a fairly direct person, I said; "Most of you have been fantastic to work with... the rest have been bearable!". There was much laughter, as everyone knew "the rest" was in reference to 2 difficult people in the company!

When I quit my job due to my homophobic boss I was in my exit interview and I used the line that Murray had in the old Mary Tyler Moore show where Ted Knight was asking for marriage advice and Murray (Gavin McLeod) says “You know how you are? Don’t be like that!”

Many US states are “Right To Work” states which is utter reverse of the truth. States billed it as, you can’t be required to join a union in your field to do your job. What it really is was union busting. It was really “right to be taken advantage of”. No collective bargaining. It’s utter bullshit.

Why not, he could at any time tell him to go f*ck himself. I'd do it just for that reason. He got what he wanted in the end. He did the drag thing, the wealthy lady obviously put it out there that this business isn't as friendly as thought, and others followed after him.

As an older gay dude (soon to be 60)... ya know, one who's from the previous generations who paved the way for LGBTQ rights for future generations... you make me so darn proud for standing up for yourself. I am as glad that life circumstances made it possible for you to put that homophobic manager to his place... while in drag. Bravo! :) I particularly draw a significant amount of pleasure from knowing that this company you used to work for, lost quite a lot of their clients resulting from that manager bigoted behavior toward gay folks like you and I. Bravo once again, Barton! ((Hugs))

@@philmorton4590 Except those employees left specifically because of the manager. And even then - it's ridiculous to insinuate that an employee leaving a job after being threatened and more-or-less robbed like that is a good look for the others of that business, that they'll just sit down and take it. No, the failing of that place was on the manager. The manager was even the one to instigate a workplace dispute. Not Barton. Barton dealt with that homophobe beautifully. He packed his shit, knowing he was bringing in a lot to that place, and found better employment when they decided to undercut him and everything he offered over a part of his identity. And on his way out, he was proud and open, and because the manager was a childish unprofessional clown about it, they fumbled everything in the aftermath. You have a problem with how the workplace suffered? Make sure homophobes like that don't make it to positions of power.

Gary Lee idk what you think gay people are but I can tell you what the rest of us really are. The people you see at pride are quite literally less than half a percent of a percent of gay people. Especially with the younger generation (gen z) we aren’t making it a personality trait, shoving it down other people’s throats, and we actually want relationships and families, not one night stands. Sorry to burst your bubble but there are millions of gay people (using as a collective term right now) Turning towards familial living, healthy relationships, and only saying they’re gay when asked. You have a very stereotypical view of gay people and you shouldn’t. A good majority of us are one of the most tolerant people on the planet since we know how it feels like to be discriminated against. Yes, there are bad gay people just as there are bad straight people these range from dumb “activists” to pedophiles.
@astrangerhere
@astrangerhere 4 жыл бұрын
@Gary Lee I find it interesting that it's always non-gays that always seem so obsessed with the sexual practices of homosexuals. I wonder what that means... In any event, I don't owe you any kind of explanation, but I will say this much: this video is about a bigot who denied his employee a raise that had ALREADY been promised him when he found out he was gay. It had nothing to do with parades, or flaunting gay sex, or any of that. The boss was simply a bigot who didn't like gays, so he took the raise back. And frankly admitted that was the reason. From the way you have commented here, it sounds like you'd be the kind of asshole to do the same thing. In any event, you know nothing about me or what I want in life. N.O.T.H.I.N.G. So shut the hell up about what my "agenda" is. I have no interest in going around tearing down businesses. In this video, yes, that boss had the RIGHT to do what he did. And the employee had the RIGHT to do what he did, and the customers had the RIGHT to follow the guy they liked to a new place, not wanting to do business with a man who was a bigot. Isn't that what you anti-gays preach? "They have the right to run their business how they want?!" Well this video is a classic example of that -- it just backfired. Be careful what you wish for. I commend parents who introduce their children to pride and other inclusive events. Hopefully less of them will grow up to hate other people because of whom they love. (And yes, it IS about love, not just sex.) You're straight, yes? Ever been in a relationship with a woman? Or maybe you're in one now? How would you like it if we reduced your relationship down to nothing but sticking your dick in a pussy? Don't like that much, do you..... it's insulting. And if you've ever been in love you will know that love is far more about than that of which you describe.

Moved to Boise in '96 it took us nearly two months to secure an apartment, no one would rent to two gay men, luckily we had friends to stay with or we'd have been homeless. Great story! I'm not surprised it was in Idaho. The LDS church has that states in its clutches for sure, I think most of the residents are LDS members. Was up there in 2016, it's a beautiful state and very clean but the people seemed very weird for sure. They didn't seem open and friendly. As a gay Hispanic man from Miami, FL I was getting stares left and right from the White conservative LDS Idahoans. Pretty scary for sure but we had a good time and seeing that canyon in Southern Idaho was something else.

@@kellharris2491 Oh no no worries. There's nothing to apologize for. I wasn't treated badly or anything. Maybe the people were standoffish because I looked and dressed differently. I didn't see any kind of gay culture or scene which is quite sad. Then again I was in the Southern part, near that canyon, near American Falls and other places like that. I flew into SLC airport, and was able to see Utah as well. There were many friendly people for sure but there was this air of extreme conservatism and intolerance that I sensed. Also the men there, in both Utah and Idaho, are really hot! LOL. There was eye candy as far as the eye can see. Probably the hottest guys I have ever seen here in the States. I really sense that many of them are in the closet, just an observation. Again the LDS church is very anti-gay and these men are trapped by that kind of religious mentality. All men are expected and almost forced to marry women and have these large families up there. Cheers!

Your boss might fire you without giving any reason? Why do people think that’s cool?
@zndanner

Coming from a state like this, it allowed me and my coworker to walk out without any recourse action because the manager hired someone we both told her was unsafe. He ended up harassing the female employees and r*ping the manager's daughter. It is a double-edged sword because it is good and bad for both employees and employers. I wouldn't, however, work in a state that wasn't right to work.
@traekas7228
@traekas7228 4 жыл бұрын
Pedro, I’ve been looking for a comment here about someone thinking getting fired for no reason is cool. I haven’t found any. So, one question is, what makes you think that people think its cool to be fired for no reason? This practice, active in some states, needs to be abandoned by both employers and employees. I’ve heard about it, but, as far as I know, have never, personally, fallen victim to it. I have quit a job before without giving 2 weeks’ notice. Partially, because my friend/coworker, got fired for one infraction of a policy. But, got fired, really, for being such an obvious Dyke. I worked there for another week, then, accidentally found out how much some of my coworkers and Supervisors truly disliked having the “2 dykes on nights” working there. I was hurt from head to toe, mainly bc I had thought that the guy I just quoted, felt positively towards me. I quit that same morning when I got home. Anybody who might have a problem with the language I just used? Its kind of like the use of the N word by African Americans, a “take back our Power” over this (no longer) painful slur. I don’t often use the word, on a regular basis, as our entire LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 Community used originally hurtful epithets (slurs) to refer to ourselves, making those words much less hurtful.

Even if you live in an "at will" state, you are NOT without recourse. Most states are fine with "firing" someone for "no reason", but if they state a reason, and it is discriminatory, that will be "an expense" they have no choice but "to take". Even at Hobby Lobby.

@Robert Schwartz I'm not at all surprised to hear of Barton's story happening in the Pacific Northwest. This part of the country, save for Portland and Seattle, really is about 25 years behind almost every other corner of America. Still, I agree with your message that there are valuable lessons to be learned all around as it pertains to Barton's story. Chief among them, I think, is that when we take pride and ownership over our narrative as members of the LGBTQ+ communities, there is very little that others can do to diminish the strength that comes from acceptance and love of self...

@Gary Lee I can certainly see where there might be cause for concern with some folks involved in the activist culture. However, that has not been my experience and I certainly hope it's not been yours. Being the product of folks from within the Black community who fought the civil rights struggles of the 50's and 60's in the American south, I'm reminded of something my grandfather would always tell me as a kid "...fighting for civil rights ain't gonna always be so civil!" In the end, that hate you referenced often results from previous experiences of being hurt, abused or feeling dejected. I think that's part of what Barton was trying to convey in sharing his story. His employer's vitriol ultimately may have cost him more than just a loyal employee (of course, we're only hearing Barton's side of the story by way of this channel).
