Gaztelugatxe is the setting for the Game of Thrones castle of Dragonstone. In reality, the CGI fortress is the home of a remote church dedicated to San Juan de Gazelugatxe. This route from the town of Bakio, a 45 minute bus ride from Bilbao is a total of 5.4km to the church. An easy day walk this church having been built on a small island joined to the mainland by a bridge before ascending the 231 steps to the church.
Legend has it that ringing the bell 3 times will bring good luck and enable your wish to be granted. This is truly a fairy tail location and well worth a visit if you are in Northern Spain.
