Pretty much every woman gets tested for GBS (group beta strep) bacteria during their pregnancy. It sounds like a scary infection of sorts... but it's not! I talk all about what it is, how they test for it, what they do about it, how it can cause problems, and answer your common questions about it. Enjoy!

This is the most thorough explanation I've ever heard I'm a GBS carrier and I've never understood what the hell it was I've always felt nasty like something was wrong with me. Thanks for clarifying this.... Four years later pregnant with my second I feel much more relieved about this 😂😂😂

@@jaz3471 Hi love , so when you have GBS its not as scary as you think. When you go into labor the hospital will provide an antibiotic in an IV that youll have to take right away as soon as your water breaks. The antibiotic will treat the GBS and it has no effect or anything like that its just a fluid that helps flush out the bacteria so that when you push , the baby will not get the bad bacteria.

Agreed! After my miscarriage the ER doctor made the rhogam shot sound like no big deal if I didn’t get it - but that it was hospital policy to offer it (which is why I got it). When the nurse asked if I knew why I was getting it and described it how the doctor did she got this “I’m going to kill him” look and then very nicely and sweetly explained why I needed it.

@@01dovecruz It is seriously no big deal. Not fun to have to mess with antibiotics in labor, but you surely have ecoili and a zillion other scary but normal things in your gut as part of your normal gut flora, just like everyone else. This is just the one they test for. It's just a precautionary thing. I'm on baby #4, and have tested positive every other time. Annoying, because I'd rather baby get a good dose of mama's cooties on the way out, instead of us both ending up switching sterile guts thanks to the abx. But it's gonna be okay. Both of you can take probiotics and start over. 💕 Hang in there!

I had this with my second birth and the first round of penicillin burned like fire going into my arm! I cried because it burned so bad and my nurse just patted me and said it would be over and done with soon enough. Then after shift change a new nurse came in and said I needed a second round. I immediately got anxiety thinking about the burning fire and told her. She said “oh that’s no problem, I’ll just dilute it with a little saline and it won’t hurt as bad”. She did just that and I didn’t feel it at all. Super annoyed that my first nurse didn’t even mention this as an option especially so early in labor. It’s not like she was rushed to pump the antibiotics through me!

I had a midwife say the only reason we are required to get tested for this in California is because some politicians baby had complications but the overall likelihood of it occurring is actually pretty rare. She also said that if you test positive for it at 35 weeks you can literally test negative a few days later and then positive later again. I get that the complications are serious but are they really that common? With more women having home births I feel like those numbers would be a little skewed.

Thank you for this video!! I’m a first time mother. During my antenatal appointments I’ve had to see a group of different doctors each visit as I believe they’re students? I don’t know. No ones explained it to me. On Wednesday I had just gone to a new one who was just the worst! He just was all rush rush rush! I couldn’t get a single word in. But I remember him saying to do a swab for GBS, he gave me a very brief explanation of it which sounded like “It’s a bacteria in your vagina and if you’re positive your baby will die”. He gave me the swab and ushered me out. (Worst appointment I’ve had my whole pregnancy and I had a bit of a cry after). I’ve had a hard pregnancy so far with a lot of scares so saying my baby will die when I’m about to give birth is not exactly smart and I’ve even gone as far as requesting to not see him for my last 2 weeks of pregnancy. But anyway, thanks for making this video. I feel SO much calmer now for my results. Xx

It will be much safer for you and baby to have antibiotics at a vaginal birth rather than an elective c section. I have been positive 2 times and had unmedicated vaginal births with several rounds of antibiotics both times. I make sure to take lots of probiotics after and breastfeed so I and baby regenerate our good bacteria and flora.

Question with my first the Dr said the test was only good for 5 weeks after the test... Which meant at my 40 week apt it was "expiring" and had to be redone. Why if its not good for very long would they do them so early?? I was emotional enough at my 40 week apt so that really added salt to the wound. Since then I have always had to push them to postpone the test by a week or two since I really don't want it redone ( note all my littles have been 5 days over due).

I'm 33 weeks and my midwife recently told me that I have gestational thrombocytopenia after having my blood work done at 2-3 different visits to see if my platelet count would rise back to normal. She expressed that if it continued to drop, I may not be able to have an epidural and if it was extremely low, I may need a blood transfusion during delivery. I'm just curious what your experience was with a similar situation, if any. It's my first baby and I'm just really nervous lol Also, I was told at this point of my pregnancy, I'd be seeing my midwife every 2 weeks and then it would be every week but they pushed my appointment out about 3 1/2 weeks which I'm concerned about because of being almost 37 weeks without seeing a doctor for almost a month. Sorry for the long question, hopefully I worded it all correctly 😂 I love your videos, btw!! 🤗

I was induced with my first two and was really hoping to go into spontaneous labor this last time around and labor at home more. I hate being stuck in the bed. Is my risk higher of having GBS because i've already had it?

I was GBS Positive for my first pregnancy, and got the IV antibiotics during my labor, everything went great. I am now having my second, and have yet to be tested for my second pregnancy. But, I was wondering if I'm tested Negative for this one, how does that work? If I have the bacteria, then I have it always correct? Or does it "flair up" at different times? How will I know that my second baby will be safe if I'm tested negative, but positive for the first one? Does that make sense? Haha TIA.

What if you test positive and your mucus plug expelled, can baby still be infected? Or no because the amniotic fluid hasn’t broken?

Question. I was planning to go to the hospital when contractions begin to be 5 minutes apart lasting a minute for an hour. The hospital is 1 hour away from where I live. I have heard that most first time moms, have like 10-16 hours worth of labor when they wait to the 5-1-1 to make their way to the hospital. Could I still wait till contractions are 5-1-1 if I have been diagnosed with GBS?

What if you don't make it to the hospital in time to get the antibiotics? Can they give you/ baby antibiotics after they are born?

What I didn't understand is. I had this with my first but not my second and now just got checked for 3rd baby and still don't have it. First son actually got really sick because they didn't treat me and he had fever and spinal tap done then finally got treated with antibiotics for 2 weeks in nicu. So I don't have gbs anymore?

If you didn’t get treated and baby tests positive for the GBS infection, what would the next steps be?

If it’s a healthy bacteria then why do they give antibiotics for it?!? I’m new to this and I didn’t have it with my first pregnancy. This is my second (24 days to go), and I was positive as well. So, I’m trying to get information about it because it’s new to me.

I tested positive and I gave birth June 5 th but I only got to give me one thing of anabiotic bec later on I gave birth and this is my first pregnancy and I have a question. I’m scared my baby is 3 weeks old now I’m worried if it going to hurt my baby bec I only got one doze of anabotic during my labor when they induce me but is there a chance I can pass if to my baby while not being pregnant anymore and should I get me and my baby tested again to see if I still have it and is it a change if I get pregnant again does this stick with me Thur the rest of my life bec I’m worried

I had my son at 20 weeks 5 days due to chorioamnionitis. I was gbs positive and we think that could be a culprit. This time around. I am on penicillin once a week to keep it at bay. Gbs was found in my urine early on in this pregnancy. I am now 39 weeks

I had to have an emergency induction due to preeclampsia at 36 weeks so I didn't get tested so I had to get treatment even if I didn't have it.

I tested positive. This is my 7th baby. By the time I feel any pain that says labor is here, I'm ready to push 30mins. I feel like it mustn't be that serious if they're going to wait until the last minute to treatment it and risk the baby's health.

I tested positive for GBS before I reached 30+ weeks because I went in for painful Braxton Hicks contractions and I was released before they told me I had GBS. I went almost 4 days without knowing I had it and then was placed on antibiotics for 7 days, followed by my OB telling me that I’ll be put on extra antibiotics during birth. I’m glad I randomly ran across your video which confirmed everything she said because I was beginning to worry. Thank you Sarah ! ❤️

So when should we go to the hospital then? I just tested positive, I'm 37 weeks and my plan was no epidural, so I wanted to go to the hospital as late as possible; obviously this changes things but what's the criterion now? How far apart should my contractions be? Thanks for your super informative videos!

@@laurenturney446 This is really funny timing because I'm currently 37 weeks again with baby number 2 😂 I didn't get an answer and since at 39 weeks I started leaking amniotic fluid without any contractions after a few hours I just went to the hospital, told them I wanted to give birth without any epidural and they said no problem, had me in observation for about 12 hours while giving me antibiotics for the GBS and finally said "sorry we have to induce you, but we'll start real slow" and it went really well, the birth was fast but the pain was bearable, I was allowed to walk around the room the entire time except the 5-10 min every 4h it took to administer the antibiotics intravenously and they brought me an exercise ball. I had 3 midwives as my birth team and overall it was a very positive experience. I hope that helps!

Thank you for replying! I'm planning on going when my contractions get at least a bit more intense as I've been in this early labor for a long time. Going on 24hours. It maybe false labor even, but we'll see! Thank you again and good luck with this one! ❤️
