should the Column end touch the detected end while tightening?

You don’t want the tip of the column touching the detector while you are tightening, because then it will touch the detector and not have enough air flow to ignite the FID when it is tight enough. A better practice is to pull the column back 1-2 mm after touching the detector, then pinch the column with one hand and tighten the but with the other, so that the column stays in position.
