Thank you, deeply. I am a forensic science student and was struggling greatly with the interpretation of chromatographs and spectra. This video helped me understand everything much clearer and organized all of my knowledge in the right sequence. I truly appreciate this segment.

The biggest problem with GC-MS is the companies producing them will not compete to drive the price down. We need more research which means lower analytical equipment costs. Everybody who wants to do research can't just happen to get a job with a deep pockets corporation supporting their work. To advance science...lower the tool costs!
@LucasLearnz
@LucasLearnz Ай бұрын
I couldn't agree more! However I'm sure some of that cost comes from the fact that these instruments are not exactly cheap to manufacture. But I agree that it would be fantastic if more affordable options would exist!

a working horse in the quadrupole mass analyzer is electric field - not magnetic. It is also not explained how oscillating of ions makes any filtering.

What does the detector in the MS measure? It hits a plate and an induced current is measured (electrometer)? At what voltage is the detector plate electronics operating at? I assume a high voltage due to the ionization of the sample?
@LucasLearnz
@LucasLearnz Жыл бұрын
As I've understood things you have the correct idea. However I'm planning on making a separate series of videos covering the different detectors so I'll get a better idea of how that part works then😇👍

Hello, sir. Am I just a beginner and our Professor asked us to write a lab report. We should identify major, minor and trace components. How can we tell if a compound is major or minor? How tall should they be to be a major component. Thank you.
@LucasLearnz
@LucasLearnz Жыл бұрын
I am not aware of a specific "threshold" in the relative intensity were a compound is considered major. But the most abundant compound will have the largest relative intensity. So if a few peaks are considerably larger than the rest I would assume these are considered as the "major compounds". However, I suggest you ask your professor to make sure. I hope that helps a little bit at least 😇

Okay, now I believe I understand your question! I first want you to know that my practical experience with these devices are very limited so I might very well be wrong! Please keep that in mind😅 With that said, I believe that it could be possible do determine the dosage with the gas chromatograph. The mass spectrometer on the other hand, based on what I know, should not have that ability since a mass chromatogram only shows the relative abundance of what exists in the sample. I hope that is helpful but please take these answers with a grain of salt!🙈

I have a question, I'm doing a research project on forensic chemistry in which TNT was analyzed. I found one paper that cited their retention time of TNT as 13.57 and others that had different numbers. Should a molecule always have the same retention time or can factors change that result?
@LucasLearnz
@LucasLearnz 4 ай бұрын
It can change based on a variety of factors such as instrument calibration although I'm not sure exactly how much it can change🤔
