Should the weight limit be changed for pro bikes? 🪶
@adadinthelifeofacyclist
@adadinthelifeofacyclist 3 ай бұрын
Track bikes' limit could be reduced to half the 6.8kg with modern technology, but it would make it more expensive to get a competitive bike
@hisdadjames4876
@hisdadjames4876 3 ай бұрын
No. Its great that pro bikes, or near pro bikes remain accessible to amateur riders. Reducing the limit would rekindle the weight-weeny development process and encourage the use of ever more expensive materials and components….putting them way out of reach of the average Joe.
@fotmheki
@fotmheki 3 ай бұрын
Yes, 7.5 kg should be the minimum so bikes are more robust and so safer also because some of them are already 7.5 kg and this rule hasn't been updated since the introduction of disk brakes
@jeromekraut8652
@jeromekraut8652 3 ай бұрын
It should stay the same. The price it would cost to have the lightest bikes would be immense and so the poorer pro teams wouldn't be able to afford them. There was a time in the 90s that those time trial machines could cost up to 50-100 grand and so the rider would already benefit from a better bike. Which would be almost like doping by just having the money. So just try to build better bikes while staying in this weight limit, though I do get the argument that for some riders the percentage canget wuite high. Then again I have never seen a 90kgrider see win the tour de France, so the handicap of Viingegard with his 58kg can't be that troublesome.

10 kg could be a good weight.. Bicycles could be made more aerodynamic and thus faster.. Manufacturers could use cheaper materials and make more profit.. People's condition would improve..😁

Ha! Just as the Comment of the Week section began, I turned to my husband and said, “Jon pops up in the various comment sections and has conversations.” Yes that was me. I was viscerally against cycling for myself, but my husband is an avid cyclist and he was watching a GCN video on his phone. The snark and sass caused me to ask what he was watching and since I am full of snark and sass, he thought I’d like it. I did. I’m also a photographer and love to travel and GCN offers all that too. Watching GCN is what we do whilst having dinner. Fast forward a couple of years and now I want to explore by bike too. Ollie is kind of responsible for me having the bike I have. She just went out on her very first outdoor ride and I submitted her to the Bike Vault. So thanks GCN, you’ve brought me around and hopefully will have many years and miles riding with my husband

So fun to see Jon back in the saddle again! Thanks for making a personal appearance, Jon, and I enjoyed your chat with Ollie about UCI pro-bike weights and it does seem that UCI-okay frames and wheels could be a good basis for it all. But then some crafty teams could run cardboard bars and what not and who knows. And I'm sort of digging the weirdness of the Bike Vault with Jon and Ollie as super judgmental judges who give a lot of super nices. 😀.

I propped the bike up with screwdriver, which in itself was quite challenging on the icy snow. I did indeed remove the screwdriver in Photoshop. No other editing, just the screwdriver. I photographed it using an EF 85mm f/1.4 lens, hence the awesome DoF. The real trick was to shoot it in the shadows and use fill flash, which made the bike and the gold chain pop. The color of the bike and the snow just worked. And as an FYI, on the chimney, the bike has not been ridden yet and I figured I would be making some adjustments then. (I have set it up exactly as my other road bike but I am sure there will be some refinement.) Really great to see you, sir! @@JonCannings

Smaller riders suffer from the weight limit however they benefit from being more aero. It's give and take

I think they argue that because of 700c they don't benefit as much as they should.
@spliffonator1
@spliffonator1 3 ай бұрын
Smaller riders being ‘more aero’ is an interesting point. Overall yes, they are more aero in terms of CdA, however in relative terms smaller riders are less aero that bigger riders. A rider that is twice as large is not twice as aerodynamically inefficient. Assuming the relative position remains the same, bigger riders are at a relative advantage - probably explains the w/CdA of hour time triallists meaning they’re generally taller, stronger riders
@richardharris8538
@richardharris8538 3 ай бұрын
The bike is a higher % of their system weight, which is an arbitrary imposition, as they could be riding a lighter bike. They might be more aero, but they're still disadvantaged on the flat because strength is proportional to the cube of rider's height, whereas air resistance is proportional to the square of that, (all other things being equal). To be fair, I think smaller riders should be allowed lighter bikes, but I'm biased.
@out_spocken
@out_spocken 3 ай бұрын
And yet, smaller riders have to put out more watts to keep the same speed on flats as bigger riders...so....it's hardly give and take. It's basic common sense...the only reason the rule exists is because of safety...and yet it fails to acknowledge that lighter riders don't need as much reenforcement as bigger riders. % of rider. Simple. If anything it might stop eating disorders because the w/kg helps smaller riders who likely suffer from eating disorders and not the big diesels that tend to carry more weight.

Jon is totally right! The faster a horse is the more weight he must carry! This is totally unfair! "In horse racing, each race specifies a set weight that all participating horses must carry. This weight is determined by the Jockey Club, which sets a ‘scale of weights’ typically ranging from 113 to 118 pounds."

re: horse racing... (I'm no expert, but...) the jockeys are weighed, then weights (lead shot) are added to the lighter jockeys' saddle to match the heaviest jockey's weight. That's the way I understand it, anyway. edit: the jockeys are weighed together with their saddles and it's the combination weight that is to be matched
@WerdnaLiten
@WerdnaLiten 3 ай бұрын
Yes, that's it more or less; if the minimum weight for the horse to carry is 58k, and the jockey is 55kg, then he'll add 3kg of lead; whereas if the jockey is 58kg, he won't carry anything......
@prestachuck2867
@prestachuck2867 3 ай бұрын
The problem I have with the horse racing thing is that the more a horse wins, the more weight they make him carry. It’s cruel torture to the horses. Imagine if they did that in cycling Pogacar and Vingegaard would have to race wearing loaded weight vests! It does no good for the sport, only to the mob bookies.

Great to see Jon back!!! He's well within the top 3 all-time best presenters list. Bring back Matt (#1 in the humour category), pair them up with Si and you have the all-star team. Ollie, you're a close 4th with competition from Emma and Chris. As for the issue of UCI weight limit, I have a different opinion. Set a min system weight, similar to F1, where riders and machine must comply with regulations. This would promote healthier fitness and be more representative of society as a whole. My suggestion would be 90 or even 100 kg total systems min. weight. This would level the field. What do you think??!

In 2000, a pro level frame set was around 1.7kg, but it's not uncommon for them to be half that weight these days, so there's definitely scope for lowering the uci limit by at least a kilo and keeping the same "safety standards" brought about by weight limits...

On the subject of the weight limit, while ofc components have evolved to be strong enough and UCI legal, making it possible to build a sub-6.8kg bike, the limit is still a (relatively) good thing for bike prices. Even on world tour teams, some bikes would be immensely more expensive between the lightest UCI legal, and a more "traditional" bike. There is already around a 10 000€/$/£ difference between the cheapest and most expensive bike on world tour events. Without a weight limit, it would almost certainly be way higher than that.

Great to see that Jon is alive and kickin, he's very good at that presenting thingy. Now all you guys have to do to make life even greater is resurrect GCN+ and the world of cycling will be even better. So more Jon and Cillian, bring GCN+ back and start up Stop riding upgrades, Buy upgrades again. That's something else i miss.

Smaller riders dominate in some races because they tend to have a better power to weight ratio. They also have an advantage when drafting and when people are drafting them. The weight limit should be increased to promote aero innovation.

I think the formula 1 comparison is quite à propos here. If they were to get rid of the 6,8 kg rule, and replace it with more stringent rigidity and resilience tests (not dissimilar to preseason crash tests in F1), they would both 1) insure a high level of safety for riders (higher actually than with a simple minimum weight limit…) and 2) they would allow for a totally new dimension of mechanical sports that is missing from road cycling, but is very important in Motorsports, which is the importance of engineering and technology development in the overall performance of the team. That would make cycling even more interesting to watch, increasing competition amongst top bike manufacturers, and to be honest, it wouldn’t even necessarily go the way of lighter and lighter and lighter bikes, it could take a totally different path ! But even if it does go the lightweight way, well it would be quite alright, thanks to the severe rigidity tests. So yeah, I’m all for it.
